Here is the DA chart to compare the percentage drops:

Interesting chart, I would post the creditionals though. Remember that your data isint valid without a crediable source.

It's not my chart. It was the one floating around the DA forums. Caveat emptor.

doesn't really matter. 1.4 Million in the first week is around $80Million. Not counting the price of CE's. That should've brought back the budget and will still be seen as profit by the end of EA's fiscal year.

How much did it cost too make ME3? That's the question.

Those number seem normal to me. Most big-title games sell the vast majority of units the first week. Probably doubly so for big-title sequels.

Yay, grats for you guys holding the line. When Bioware finally stop making a profit we'll have no more Bioware games to play... oh wait..

I wonder why the sales dropped? Oh yeah, everyone on these boards bombarded Metacritic and Amazon with horrible reviews, accomplishment? It sure is, you managed to successfully ensure the possibility of never seeing another ME game. Thanks!

It makes sense because many of the fans of Baldur's Gate and KotOR probably pre-ordered DAO and the second bump was from reviews and word of mouth. DA2 started getting bad reviews right after release so didn't pick up the fence sitters.

The fact that ME3 isn't available in GAME or Gamestation in the UK probably has a lot to do with it too.

The drop in the US was worse than the drop in the UK.

EA does not get 100% of the purchase price for non-Origin purchases.

I think you have this wrong:

Spoiled (the game before is was released), Reaction (slammed Bioware with hatred and death threats on the day of release), Action (then spammed the forums with the same thread asking for free DLC and the world is ending threads), Effect (Got what you wanted, and now the sales are being affected).

You forget, OP, that ME3 outsold ME1 -and- 2 in just the first week alone. So no, the drop in sales has nothing to do with the endings.

People await a game release.

Game is released.

People run out to buy it the first week of release, release week numbers are huge.

People are happy (or bitter angsty emo babies, whatever) playing their game.

Sales go down because the huge mass of people that wanted the game now... owns the game, and doesn't really need to buy a second copy.

Bitter angsty emo babies laugh about the fact that sales are down after everybody who rushed out to buy the game bought the game, because they hate the video game company and want it to go out of business and hundreds of employees to get fired.

I eat popcorn.

Personally I think the drop % is that large on later releases since those titles had larger marketing budget. Overhyping mediocre products will give a good first sale - but also backfire when people realice they have been screwed.

Fine, let's call a 80% drop in sales normal and we'll just continue to monitor the data.

It outsold ME1 and 2 by Pre-orders alone.

But I don't see how that has anything to do with sales drop?

dont think its relevant since those that are buying it probably have been waiting and going half nuts during tha past 2 years. so id think most people bought it the first 1-2 weeks
but that just SPECULATION lol

If it where a movie, that drop would be considered catastrophic. The usual drop for the average mega-blockbusters is around 50-60% (less if it's above average, more if it's below average). 70% drop goes for really hated ones.

70% is for movies like Twilight, Doom, Eragon...

The week which is not relevant to see if people likes it is the first, that one is just about hype. Then is when the word of mouth starts to have an effect.

I get the feeling BioWare knew these numbers before Ray made his statement.

Pre-order incentives seem to be more prominent than they have been in the past, which might account for strong early sales that dip considerably after release. We also have to factor in the current economic climate, whereby people are making smarter decisions about what they buy. To someone who used to pick up a new game on a whim, the current situation might mean that they might not do so now, unless it's a franchise they are already interested in. And those who are already interested are more likely to have pre-ordered.

But that's pure speculation, based on nothing but hunches, to be taken with however many pinches of salts you desire.

Honestly, if Me 3's ending and DA2's quality are what Bioware is going to offer from now on, then I don't really care if they stay in business.

Kinda sucks for you though I guess.  Oh well, not my problem.
