It's a pretty massive drop considering the game has multiplayer this time around.

sales may pick up again once dlc is announced

also remember me3 wasnt the only game to come out on march 6th because tekken vs sf came out also so maybe more gamers bought that :shrugs:

dont forget guys street fighter x tekken also came out the same day as me3 so that can be another reason

The only info on sales I can find is on  VGchartz and Street Fighter x Tekken's sales are pretty bad.

74% eh?

Sounds more like counting pre-orders in the first week to me.

No one is going out to buy it with the recent spike in fuel prices.

Well of course fan response has played a part in the drop. Amazon and metacritic were review bombed. Almost every gaming news outlet had page one news about how fans were hating on the ending.

I get the Retake Mass Effect movements desire to have the ending changed. I think they will do something about it, and that's great. However, honestly it's an amazing game up until the ending, maybe Bioware's best. I understand anger because of that, but people convicing others to not buy what is widely considered an otherwise exceptional and emotionally rich title rubs me the wrong way. Sucks that fans want to hurt a company who honestly CREATED the thing people are so passionate about.

Fan response if anything will drum interest. (Greatest game ever but then ending sucks?....that's what most the reviews say. That makes people curious.)

Heres's ME 2 sales first couple weeks

Week Ending Week Weekly Change Total
30th January 2010 1 874,373 N/A 874,373

Week Ending Week Weekly Change Total
10th March 2012 1 1,631,609 N/A 1,631,609
17th March 2012 2 338,672 -79.2% 1,970,281

Hmm 90k more sales in week 2....edit.

Course this is VgChartz so meh, numbers are probably a bit off...but since that's what people on here are posting figured I'd roll with it.

As far as rooting for a great game to have bad sales because you don't like then ending......you really just have no idea.

I don't think it matters much at all. Take a look at this.

http://www.vgchartz....s=0&results=200

According to this data, ME3 is (globally) not far from out selling ME2 even though it's only been a few weeks since release. Look at the data again this time next year and you can expect it to have easily outsold ME2 even though it has a 2 year head start.

EA and Bioware won't be too upset about that... I do agree there's been some impact on short term sales because of all the whinging, but it not going to make ME3 a failure over all.

That's good to hear imo. I want the game to do well, and I also want them to respond to fan complaints.

Sounds like that is what is happening!

Some would doubtlessly say that the only way to "teach them a lesson" is by making sure the game does poorly. I think that mentality ignores the fact that, regardless, it is in Bioware's best interest to respond to such a vocal fanbase. It's both good PR and a good loyalty plan.

Sales dropoff isn't the whole picture, but when you also look at the price dropoff then it is clear the word of the ending is getting around, and people are putting off buying it, especially the causal gamers, ironic really considering they are the least likely group to complain about the ending.

I don't want to hurt them, but I can't move on knowing how bad the ending was. Hopefully they'll change that and we can go back to being friends. Or at least developer and fanboy. ;)

More relevant is the fact it's now £17.99 on Amazon.

That's the "It's realy good you shoule get it factor" at work. ME3 won't have that I'm afraid.

ME3 did amazing sales in the first two weeks because ME2 was amazing. Then word of the ending got out. :(

Word of the ending got out, and we all know that means the 30 hours that were awesome just totally don't matter.

OK so having 3 weeks of global data collected on vgchartz.com, I'm comparing ME3 to ME2, DA2, and Halo 3 (another 3rd in a series large volume sales title).  I'm using XBox 360 data only since I'm lazy.  Glancing at the volumes and trends on the other platforms suggests they won't impact armchair analysis significantly.

Title                  Units Sold   Week Delta   Sales vs original Week
Mass Effect 3
10th March 2012         1,631,609
17th March 2012           338,672     -79.2%
24th March 2012           165,734     -51.1%      -89.8%

Mass Effect 2
30th January 2010         874,373
06th February 2010        242,740     -72.2%
13th February 2010        137,882     -43.2%      -84.2%

Halo 3
29th September 2007     3,811,047
06th October 2007         781,506     -79.5%
13th October 2007         327,321     -58.1%      -91.5%

Dragon Age II
12th March 2011          387,851
19th March 2011          127,377       -67.2%
26th March 2011           60,875       -52.2%       -84.3%

Performance on ME3 is reasonably in line with Halo 3.  ME2 and Halo show a stabilisation around week 8 that is not shown in Dragon Age II.

So from all appearances, bad word of mouth probably hasn't impacted ME3 substantially  yet.

^ Thanks. Nice armchair analysis.

If we focus solely on BioWare games, ME3 has the worst percent drop. That includes ME1 and DAO as well.

However, ME3 did well by any BioWare measure the first week. It's hard draw any conclusions at this point from the estimated VCG data.

However, we don't know how many units are needed to breakeven, the profit margin, the damage to goodwill, or the damage to future sales, games, and DLC.

ME3 dropped more than DA2. Hmm....

ME is also less popular than DA

Hmmm interesting that Halo released  prior to the holiday rush.  Dragon Age II and Mass Effect 3 released a couple months after in the slow time of year where big release are scarce.

The other aspect that isn't being tracked is the average consumer price paid.  I don;t know of any source for historical price information so we can't compare 2nd and 3rd week discounts on the other titles with ME3.

ME3 deserves to be a financial success, regardless of the ending (we all have an opinion about that) a lot of work and heart has gone into making the rest of the game. The decisions taken by the production and management level should not be allowed spoil the efforts given by the working staff. I can only imagine their frustration at the fan response, and I do not feel good wishing ME3 be a commerical failure because I was disappointed with the conclusion.

ME3 is currently on offer on origin, buy it and get arkham city for £10, I do not know if this is also available in the US or elsewhere. I imagine this kind of promotion will boost sales figures.
