When it comes to the archetypes (e.g. tank, healer, ranged/melle/positioned dps), are the joinable characters each better at their jobs than the PC can be, because of their special backgrounds, etc?

For example, in BG2: ToB, it was impossible for the PC to be anywhere near as good at melee dps as Sarevok was; also Kivan in BG1 was about 100 times better at ranged dps than the PC, etc.

Can we expect the same situation in DA:O?  In terms of sheer effectiveness, is it worth making your PC an archer if Leliana would be much better?  A healer if Wynne or Morrigan would be better?  A tank, if you couldn't hold a candle to Alistair? etc.

I don't think that will be the case, how they can be better than the PC if you don't leave him/her up properly

From my understanding "dps" means damage-per-second. I don't understand how that applied to a turn based RPG such as Baldur's Gate.

As far as I know each joinable character comes with one specialization already selected and another one open for you to assign to them when they reach level 14.

Alistair - Templar Likely best suited as a tank

Leliana - Bard

Zevran - Assassin Both Leliana and Zevran will be suited for the Rogue slot in your group (someone to pick locks and disable traps)

Morrigan - Shapeshifter

Wynne - Spirit Healer Granted Wynne is likely the better person to fill the Healer roll in the group, the base Mage spells include healers so you could use Morrigan instead without even getting her the spirit healer specialization.

Oghren - Berserker

Sten - Warrior From what I have read (trying to avoid major spoilers as much as possible) Sten will likely have both specializations open for you to chose. Either way, both Oghren and Sten could fit into the Tank/Melee DPS roll easly.

Personally, my first playthrough I'll be a Warrior with Alistair as my tank, Morrigan as my healer (dont know if I'll make her a spirit healer or not), and Leliana or Zevran to pick locks (depending on who I like most). I think the system will be very flexible because the specializations only add 4 abilities that you can chose from and do not lock out any. However, I am expecting there to come a point where you have to take a character with you (for something like their personal side quest).

Really, Sarevok was that good?  I didn't use him, but my PC was pretty powerful.  What was it about those two characters that made them better than you could be?

I highly doubt they are better. You can shape your character as much as you want, to get better than them. (Unless you further advance them the same way as you make your PC, of course... In that case I suppose they are even).

Though I believe some companions, such as Shale, have abilities which are only for them.

But to answer your question; I am pretty sure it's worth making your PC how you want. If you focus on Archery you could get much better than Leliana I am sure, if you focus on healing, you can be much better than Wynne.

@ en0yls - A turn in BG was 1 minute, made up of 10, 6-second rounds. Now, say Minsc scores 5 hits in that time, doing a total of 120 damage, while our PC does a meagre 60 damage and Jaheira inflicts only 30 damage. Sarevok would be doing 2 dps, the pc 1 dps, and Jaheira would do 0.5 dps. I know that's not how we counted damage back in the day, but as an illustration of the rpg archetypes, I think it still applies...more or less.

WELL they are the only one to get Bonuses if they like you so they may be better then you by a little.
