I think that you should be given to option to refuse joining the Wardens...

Older games like Fallout and World of Xeen and even the Ultima series had options like these.
They were phased out because players found it irritating to be subjected to these kind of surprises, especially if they're they type to forget to save often.
So even though such choices are fun in 'retrospect', for the first run these sort of options are terribly annoying and as such removed from games as we know them.

Hence the autosave about 10seconds before said scenario... Also, the choice doesn't have to kill you. It can simply knock you out the same way Ser Cauthrien is incredibly tough to beat, except Duncan is unbeatable. In fact, that choice could be played out in a cutscene too..

I think if you make a choice like that, though, there should just be the ominous "Your journey is over" screen.

Came here to post this. No need for unnecessary scripting or programming. You refuse the primary quest, your game is over.

Is it fun to just chose then see a "Load last save" menu? There is no story if you are not a Gray Warden. All the achievements in the game are designed that you are a Gray Warden and there for are "special".

The whole story is written with you as the Gray Warden.

If you are not Gray Warden - you will not find the ash. You will not recruit any of the NPCs you encounter. You will not get into half the zones. You will die a poor and pathetic death as you are hunted by Dark Spawns you cannot sense at the wake of Ostagar. Or various other bad endings.

There is no point to waste a player's time with a pointless one sided fight which ultimately results in you reloading from last save. At least with Ser Cautherion you were rescued. You bring a weapon/resist Duncan during the joining you are dead - no buts no second chances and no future.

Heh. I was thinking it would be better if you could just straight up ask Duncan to conscript you.. ie in the mage origin. I didn't want to sell Jowan out, but I didn't want to help him either, but if you don't pick you can't progress in the storyline. Would have liked to just skip all that and go straight to Ostagar.

Would be good if your only interest is running through an origin.

True, that would be awesome.
