I have killed some rats and a spy, but don't seem to be able to do anything else. Without spoiling can you let me know if there are other things that I can do at present.

Have found out that there are more things to do, but still have to discover how.
Looks like patience is in order. I probably have to talk to someone who I have not yet met.
Either that, or there is a mod conflict which stops me from going from one area to another.

In the Secret of Bonehill mod, only very specific area's of the edge of the map are exits. One can be found by exiting the town to the west, out of the gates, another can be found in the east. If I remember well there's a guy with the same name as the mod-maker you have to talk to for the next quest.
BTW: I can't help you much further with that, after a few battles I quited the mod and left it to continue from my earlier save, as the weapons I looted where terribly overpowered and would make the rest of BG1 a breeze.

The first part of the mod is actually pretty straightforward.
Leave the starting aea to the east. Enter the passage to the north and talk to the druid there. Accept his quest. Then talk to Sir Billybob who's standing in a field to the east. Accept his quest to hunt down the bandits. Leave this area to the north. Clear the next area to complete Sir Billybob's quest, then go west. Keep going west till you get to the area with the castle (a replica of D'Arnise Hold). Make sure you explore this area thoroughly (there's an item you need), then clear out the castle. If you want some really overpowered items, make sure to clean out the catacombs benesath the castle (you can enter the catacombs through the dungeon).
After cleaning out the castle, return to the town and report to the mage. He'll give you your next quest. If you get stuck, send me a PM.

Leaving the area to the east doesn't lead anywhere. I'll try Son of Imoen's suggestion and try other points along the eastern edge. However, looking on the SoB forum, I think that the problem may be a conflict between the worldmap and the mod.
I am ashamed of you, Son of Imoen! Fancy looting when you have been warned repeatedly against doing such things!!
It isn't the looting that I have found overpowered, but the items that you can buy.
I must admit that I picked up the manual to give extra intelligence. Upon discovering the spy, I also learned the spells that he had stashed away as that isn't looting IMO.
A lot of the spells that can be picked up there are way overpowered. Using Tutu, that isn't so much of a problem, but with BGT it would be as you go into BG2 knowing way too many spells.

No matter how hard I looked, I could find no exit to the east or west, just the one to the south.
Either it's a bug, or I need to talk to someone who I haven't yet met.
I'm wondering if it would work if I used the movetoarea command to get to the areas that have been mentioned. I know their names, (Looked in the area files) but think that things probably have to be done in a specific way for spawns to happen.
I have currently put that game on hold in the hope that I can finish the mod later. I can walk out on it at any time so there is no real problem, just frustration about not being able to finish it. Once I have finished it, I will probably either uninstall it or ignore it as the items such as the bow of tuigan etc. are not meant for BG1.

*edit: it's been a long time ago I tried out that mod.

I have met Sir Billy Bob by cheating my way there (movetoarea). Didn't save it of course. Just trying to find out if I could finish the mod somehow. Got to speak to the druid who Said all sorts of things about how to get here there and everywhere. I think that was supposed to open up those areas for exploration. It doesn't. So I'm thinking that there is an incompatability between the mod and the worldmap as has been intimated on the SoBH forum. That was a long time ago though, so I would have thought that the problem would have been solved.
I think that I will just give this mod a miss in the future, though I suppose that I could use the overpowered items to finish off the Drizzt Saga which I have yet to do.
There is that one room with some kind of demon who in my opinion is unbeatable.
Maybe with the overpowered items he will be beatable.

(I wish I could tell you how I got there, they were in the area to the east, but I can't remember how I got there (*). It involved talking to Sir BillyBob first (in a house on a hill), but he too was in an adjacent area, if I remember well).

And there was me thinking that you had been looting shops and suchlike, knowing that the value of the items was more than the 200gp fine.
Or perhaps even stealing the tome that increases intelligence from your employer.
The way I'm going, my character's intelligence will be at least 23 before leaving BG1. Since he's dualled to mage that is quite a useful intelligence.
I'm wondering if I will get extra spell slots as a result as I have no idea which intelligence values are of any import.

No change in spell slots I'm afraid, though if you get it up to 24 you have 100% chance of learning spells without use of potions (also a bit more resistant to those mindflayer attacks).
