I should have expected Ray to defend rather than listen. Its funny how everyone with a tie cares more about profits that quality products.

He's talking as though people who didn't like the ending simply don't understand it.  "We'll provide more clarity" is like a 5 year old telling a joke and then explaining why you should laugh.  We aren't having promblems understanding the ending.  We just don't like it because it is of such low quality compared to the rest of the franchise, because it flushes away in one swirl all of the choices and achievements we made through the course of 3 games.

The problem is not "lack of clarity" in regards to the ending.

The problem is it's lack of quality.

This.  One thousand times, THIS!

I understand the ending (singular) included on the disc; as much as something with that amount of logical inconsistencies, uncharacteristic behaviors, Deus Ex Machina and Space Magic handwaving can be understood.

There is no need for further clarification.  The ending is perfectly clear.

Clearly bad.  Clearly unacceptable.  Clearly a placeholder for the real endings that based upon the other 99% of the game I KNOW Bioware can produce.

This is your chance for a do-over Bioware, please don't waste it hiding behind "artistic integrity."

Our first instinct is to defend our work and point to the high ratings offered by critics – but out of respect to our fans, we need to accept the criticism and feedback with humility.

What? ...
If I get my work criticized, my first instinct is to see where could I have failed. If the critic is valid, I have no other than accept it and concede. If not, I would defend it.

There is no way they can just accept the endings as positive and well put out. If they found it somewhat good? That's cool with me. But they have to be very shortsighted to not see the problems WE see in them.

And hell, since when the opinion of a couple of critics, who you probably paid anyways, is better than that of a WHOLE fanbase? I personally would prefer the former, since it's a way varied number of individuals that are actual FANS of my work and aren't just doing their job but actually giving their hearts and brains to give me feedback.

Harbinger finish please:
THIS HURTS ME.

+1. Got nothing more to add.

+1. Wonderfully put, i for one would just love some answers to some of the ommisions in the ending.

No no no no!!! The main problem of the game's conclusion is not the lack of closure and answers; it's the massive, gaping PLOT HOLES, INCONSISTENCIES and NULLIFICATION OF PAST CHOICES! The only way to solve this problem is to completely scrap the current endings and come up with ones that are actually logical, rectify our past choices and don't butcher the lore already established. I'm pretty much convinced they're just going to offer some sort of BS explanation of their current unexplainable endings; not a DLC that solves the real problems.

It addressed the issue in a human manner. I am very glad that he did it and I like to wait for more. Come on, It's not like they can say after two weeks, "Hey, we will do exactly this and this about the ending". It takes a time to construct something reasonable, especially with more people involved.

I picked positive messages from the statement, not a material to fuel a nonconstructive angst.

Why after reading this i still feel like i was called "entitled" again?
"some of our most passionate fans".... but the "most folks appear to agree"...

yees, and

Mass Effect 3 concludes a trilogy with so much player control and ownership of the story that it was hard for us to predict the range of emotions players would feel when they finished playing through it.

Can someone explain me what does that mean?
Where are my promised choices? Where are my promissed 16 diffrent endings? Where are MY Shepard?
Where is my
player control and ownership of the story?
I think i somehow missed them on my disk.
Because that guy who ... ugh.. talks  with starchild is not my Shepard.
I'm out of words, i need go for a walk now

This whole post reads as very humbling but I'm not entirely convinced. We are still being responded to as both the minority and angry kids playing with their toys. I am really ready to see something that stops considering us in a dismissive fashion, which is exactly what this feels like (once again). I know this sounds really whiny, but seriously, stop noting us as a minority and don't tell us we're being angry and destructive when this is content that you pushed forward. As always, my question still remains, "What the heck design decisions led to these endings?"

The effect of his statement is exactly to appear humbled. The "Our first instinct was to defend our product so we went to the critics" statement gives it away, because right afterwards he becomes a good guy who "accepts critics of the fans with humility".
Honestly? Really?

"Artistic integrity" This statement has never been more out of place.

Mass effect 1 - complete upon launch > DLC expanded the experience

Mass effect 2 - complete upon launch > DLC expanded the experience

Mass effect 3 - Not finished > DLC required to finish the game.

I'm not sure about you guys but this is how I'm viewing this.

No i dont , its way to soon to cheer..

Also some of Mr.Ray's line where insulting and felt like another few
stabs with the knife towards the fans.. for example the first instinct
they had was pretty much hide behind the critics ^^

Riiiight... people that get payed to promote your game that probably
havent even played it let alone finished it.

I think it was a good responce from Dr. Ray.  Some people will irrationally bash anything he would have said, but he seemed humbled yet realistic in his views.  I agree that some people need to be more civil.  They could just NOT respond at all and start work on the next game.

I'm super happy. I think his post was very candid and genuine to be honest.

I kinda think this apology is mostly to get the core fan based settled so they'll be able to sell DLC to them to expand the multi-player. With people returning their games to amazon and origin maybe their projections for profits from it are becoming a lot smaller.

Honestly, I think that's EXACTLY what happened. The news only broke about 24 hours ago that many retailers were accepting returns. Isn't it interesting that it's NOW we hear from one of the "big cahunas" at Bioware? They're silent  until people start returning the game; then all of the sudden it's important enough to make an official announcement about. I want desperately to take this as a beacon of hope, but the reasonable person inside of me sees it as a business ploy.

Sad.

I think i might be stating the obvious here but i really believe EA & Bioware were expecting this to be a continual strong earner until another Mass Effect Triology begins. However it's now starting to appear that their core fans (the ones most likely to get addicted to the multi-player) are returning their games and not playing online, which most likely scares them because they are losing a big market for continual releases of multi-player DLC.

What honestly scares me is that I can forsee EA calling ME3 a loss and just dumping it, which will happen I think if this drags out for a few more months. If Bioware has any hope of really salvaging the situation, they need to start making meaninful reparations soon. Obviously developing DLC and/or an alternate ending will take time, but in the meantime they need to stop hiding behind
PR  smoke and mirrors. If they will respond in a meaningful way and truly make this right, then they will gain the largest most loyal consumer/fanbase the gaming industry has ever seen, and Mass Effect IP will be profitable for years. But if they keep blowing it, the whole ME universe will implode.

The post by Ray seems to put another dent in the Idoc Theory, that all of this was planned.

I'm also dissapointed that they seem to think the ending was good, either they made a rushed ending to meet the deadline or they are going to pull one of the biggest stunts in gaming history and release a full-fledged ending DLC/Expansion.

I'd just like to say I love the Mass Effect series, especially the lore. I've played ME1 and it was a 10/10, ME2 was a 9/10 and ME3 was a 10/10, until the end where it sank down to 0.

I understand it may be hard to hear such harsh criticism but I care a lot about the ME universe.

EDIT:
Also not a fan of the "dancing around the issue" act. I prefer straight & honest answers.

He wont be able to if he keeps talking down to his fanbase and acting like were to stupid to comprehend their brilliant artistic ending.

A massive portion of the angry fans are the diehard crowd.  The same ones that spread praise of the game online and with word of mouth.  More importantly they are the most likely to buy DLC or to keep the games community active.

Well this is still kind of victory - the fact that CEO himself has to address fans means, BioWare has certainly realized the extent of fan rage. So we can hope they will really address out problems.

I of course, would point to the fact that most of these critics wouldn't know their behinds from a hole in the wall and give games like Modern Warfare 3 a 9.5/10.

If you read it carefully, it clearly states they're working on;

A: New Mass Effect games.
B: Closure for the endings
C: Confirmed the Mass Effect will continue, which obviously, is a cue for 'New Mass Effect Games'.
D: Confirmed that they ARE working on the endings.

So, we push a little more, keep up this vocal state for another two-three months. Untill the day they release DLC. And then we get Red, Blue, Green, ORANGE with little blue children!

Here's the deal. STEP OUTSIDE YOUR FRIGGIN BUBBLE!

Your "critics" are in the industry. Your Testers are in the industry.

They're going to reinforce your groupthink no matter what you do.

This is exactly why the Bush administration thought we'd be getting flowers and chocolates in Baghdad.

What in the world is a "game content initiative?" Are they talking patches, dlc? Also this doesn't really fill me with hope. Sure we'll see something in April, and maybe we'll get closure, but it seems their standing by their poorly written "artistic" ending that makes no sense.
