It's funny that PR speak from the founder that has no input on the creative process is the closest thing we have thus far to ''we'll see how we can alter the ending''.

I mean, yeah it's buried in the usuaol denial and patting themselves on the back for pleasing the extremely easily pleased ''official'' critics, but it still seems a slight improvement over snarky Twiter feedback.

The founder may have no input in the creative process, but I'm willing to bet he has some input on the funding process. He could be listening to their team, trying to see what kind of financial support would be required to appease the masses, and if it is still financially viable to do so.

Just a thought.

I was originally mad at what was said, but after some time to let it digest, there is some optimism to be found. They may talk in a condescending manner, but you also have to look at things from their perspective. They still have to make the product sound as good as possible if they want sales.

As for the good news...
First of all this was a very high positioned person talking. Slowly but surely the issue has been getting elevated. It shows just how important this really is. Regardless of whats in the words, you know they are under a lot of pressure at the moment.

Secondly we almost got confirmation that *something* is going to be done about the endings. It could be something as small as a bit more in-game explanation/resolution of things (which will likely still be inadequate for most), but it is an admission of sorts that they dropped the ball. Hopefully we get more, but at the moment the discussion is trending in the right direction.

Seems quite simple to me, for artistic integrity they are keeping the endings as they are (I am glad since I liked them), but for other fans there will be DLC which provides more content based on questions they had remaining such as the Catalyst, what happens to your squad mates and relays after and such. It will be paid for DLC (rightly so imho) but will expand on what we already have for additional content relating to exposition and things people did not understand.

It was always going to be this way, to think otherwise is rather foolish because you had Dragon Age 2 do the same thing. People left massive negative feedback and the issues were resolved (outside of the core game) in the form of DLC which went in the right direction for many.

Sorry if it sounds harsh but this (imho) is the right way to do it. My opinion maybe disliked but I will stick with it. Holding my own line as it were. At least they acknowledged your feedback and will put some effort into resolving it and you was never going to get it free or changes made to the core game. But at least there is a resolution even if you do not like it. Just bare that in mind come April.

They are developing more content, including full games. the ME universe is not gone, not destroyed. Thus....there must be things they are planning.

if they don't change something in their logic the new games will fail too.
EA forces them to please the masses, Actionmode for exaple or Multiplayer. If BioWare abandon RPGs this will be the end of the genre.

just look at the marketing EA did with Mass Effect 3, they love to invest money in marketing, they got a boner after they saw the initial sales. they will milk the cashcow ME has become. I don't know for you but I'm sure, the franchise won't get any better in the future.

I'm not even remotely interested in an expanded version of the current ending, and I don't think I'm alone in that. Unless this is a total rewrite of the ending, then I think this would be a wasted effort.

Expanded or inclusive version of current ending would be poor move.  Reinforces anger.  Like watching car crash of loved one.  Told would feel better if saw new footage.  Realize same gorey details from different camera angle.  Does not help closure.  Loved one still dead.

:D

Exactly.

There will be a new full game in the Mass Effect universe. I just hope we can get a view of the other side of the equation. Like take control of a one of the Reaper forces, say Marauder Shields for a game.

I want to have faith but I don't want to get my hopes set too high. That artistic integrity part bothers me though. Guess we will have to wait and see. All I want is an actuall attempt towards Tali's face and different that actually end differently. hoping for blue babies too lol

No, he's an MD, a medical doctor who later got into the game business

Yes, Mass Effect 3 is an amazing game OVERALL. Everyone knows and agrees with that, there's no need to tell us what the critics think because generally we agree with them. We're really just concerned about the plot holes and lack of endings. From what he said, it sounds to me like they really really don't want to change the ending and instead will just come up with some bull **** reasons as to why Joker magically turns into a ****, how he got your love interest on to the Normandy and maybe they'll add some dialogue choices to the god child conversation. Then again, that's all I really want. I just want it to make sense, a new ending would show the fans are their #1 priority, but do to them being part of EA now its safe to assume money comes before everything, even if that means losing customer loyalty.

"So, it's incredibly painful to receive feedback from our core fans that the game's endings were not up to their expectations. Our first instinct is to defend our work and point to the high ratings offered by critics - but out of respect to our fans, we need to accept the criticism and feedback with humility."

I feel really bad now after berating the games ending. But they were sub-par in comparison to, well, anything really. But they were a huge letdown after such an epic trilogy. I know how "heartwrentching" it is to pour your life into a creative piece and have it ripped apart. Is this more fool me or them?
:(

Lack of need to feel bad.  Not attempting to be punitive.  Malice not stemming from Indoctrination Theory supporters or Retake Mass Effect.  Crushing disappointment.  Pain also felt by fans, lack of resolution exacerbates pain.

If invested in product with substandard resolution, criticism expected.  Cannot be immune due to emotional response.

The most important thing about that letter to me is his defending the ending. That means they expected that to be the true ending. There was never a REAL ending in the works. That was supposed to be it.

This is not good. I can understand his defending it but it makes our chances of getting to finish the war with the Reapers not good.

I just can't beleieve that they are surprissed. The endings are completly detached from the rest of the game. It's like one person did the 98% of it and then got hit in the head by a brick so someone else had to finish it without bothering to check what happened in the game earlier on...All of us loved the game right up to the last 10 minutes or so. It's just this terrible ending...

Now for the critics...well they can't exactly say "Hey guys, the game is fantastic...except for the ending which completly sucks!" cuz no one would buy it. Endings is something that they can't revil, no matter if it's good or bad, it's something that has to be left unspoiled. So there you have it. The part of the game they are allowed to talk about was great so the review is great. Simple as that.
As for the artistic aspect of the ending...for the love of god...chosing color of the explotions is not art!
" So...guys...this ending doesn't fit at all...it doesn't make sense...it has nothing to do with player choices in previous games...what shall we do? Hey, let's call it art! Then we can always blame it on fans not getting it..."

Explaining the endings doesn't really help here. I just can't see how all the plot holes and this entire mess can be rationaly explained without altering the final events. And no, space magic doesn't cut it!

I do believe that they can still fix this or more like, I hope they still can fix this. After all they did pull off the rest of the game. It's just a shame that they didn't even see it turning out like this.

He promises closure, which sounds more like an epilogue than anything else.

But hey, I think that's what most people want, sense to be made. Just have to wait and see.

 wall of text..

So...your editor, agent and publisher, who gets the money, can tell you how to write and your fans, who gives the money, can't? As Mr. Spock would say: "Illogical."

That is not even the worst...

This story is a piece of art! No, every story is a piece of art!

...

Can someone give an accurate and very precise definition of art and mostly, where it said it had to be kept intact? Because if you are going with the "every story is art and must be protected"... you are opening another "can of worms". At this point, every single thing someone does can be consider art and so, protect from anything else! This picture is art! This structure is art! This drawing is art! This car is art! Those sticks glue togeter is art! This meal is art! This plant is art! This hole is art! This **** I took there is art! etc etc...

There is nothing stoping people from using that excuse because let's not hide it, using the "it is art" to PRESERVE something is nothing else but an excuse. Things that are unique and special worth keeping won't be needing this excuse. It will come naturaly.

And sorry, the me3 ending is soo deja vu, it is really boring. ME3 didn't need any special ending to be consider unique. It already had it's universe. Universe that got pretty much destroy in the hope to make a memorable ending.

...

well, I guess everybody will remember the ending...

That's a question that will take far too long for me to write about.  Here is a standard dictionary response from OneLook.com:

"Art is the expression of ideas and emotions through a physical medium, like painting, sculpture, film, dance, writing, photography, or theatre. If you love the creative process, maybe you'll devote your life to art. The definition of art is constantly changing and evolving to include different types of activity, and the question

“What is art?” has been discussed for thousands of years. Some people believe that art is the attempt to create beautiful objects, while others call art all of the works that appear in a gallery or museum, whether beautiful or ugly. Art can also mean a specific skill you’ve learned, like the art of baking a delicious pie."

That is just a dictionary definition.  Art is definitely a word that conjures up debate.  And no, saying something is art doesn't give you cover to hide behind it.  Art is open to critism.  Artists need to be willing to learn from criticism.  At the same time, creative intergrity needs to be maintained.  It's a balancing act.

Ray Muzyka's statement brings me hope, they are listening, maybe overwhelmed because they didn't expect this emotional reaction, a reaction that shows we care about ME...but it's easy to save this epic screwup, just listen to constructive criticism, it's there...

Some doesn't indicate quantity.  It means an unspecified portion or share of per dictionary:

You're assuming here.
