Why do I get the feeling that they'll just add Shepard to the paradise planet scene and proclaim "see, we gave you a happy ending!" thus completely missing the point about it all making no sense?

I am amused by the appeal to artistic integrity. Where was this commitment to art when the Mass Effect team was being given an unrealistic timetable?

Art is a subjective thing, subject to interpretation and dependent upon perspective. The ending of the game, on the other hand, is objectively nonsensical, an empirically verifiable deviation from the story that has unfolded across the three games. Art cannot be wrong, even when it fails to please. I am a big believe that video games are--or at least can be--art. The ending of Mass Effect 3, however, is not art. It is, at best, paint-by-numbers. It is also unequivocally wrong.

bump, this needs to be read, and the if you agree say in the comments if you think that the game was great other than the ending.

This is reasonable on Bioware's part. The debate now shifts from "whether we fix it" to "how we fix it." Thus, we need to shift our tactics from anything that might be perceived as "anti-Bioware" to a strong "pro-awesome ending" movement.

In short, we have held the line. Now it's time to mobilize the fleet, and move forward with a campaign to encourage Bioware to "clarify" the ending with some well-written, engaging content that makes sense in the larger universe. Give them cover to do something outstanding without fear they will "look like wimps" as some have put it.

(On a more specific level, my own personal suggestion is that they take indoctrination theory and run with it. But that's up to them.)

It is no PR spin, nor has it ever been. Public Relations does not deal with the creative integrity of a project. PR deals with marketing to the MEDIA, not to the public. If I write a press release, I send that directly to the media. I may host some conventions, etc, but PR has nothing to do with this issue. This comes from a PR minor with a Pro Writing major.

I have great respect for the co-founders of Bioware. That fact that this letter comes from the head of Bioware is a very BIG deal. It shows they are sincerely concerned about what you think. You, the core fans of Bioware.

So give them a chance. I don't like the endings, but I stand by their rights as artists because I am a storyteller, a writer, a novelist. I've sat behind the director's chair on a film set. I've worked on a game show for television. I've written a novel, a graphic novel, manga, short stories, and have done plenty of journalistic work. I may not like the ending, but I will be rational about it. Bioware has earned it by providing over a decade of great stories and entertainment.

So, wait and see. Give constructive feedback. Notice he appreciates our passion. Just don't be destructive. This is what you call a fully extended olive branch. "We're listening, we appreciate you, dialogue is open." Good stuff.

I hate how they keep saying a minority. From the friends I have and all the facebook/tweets/forums I read, 98% dislike the ending. Get your facts together Bioware!!!!!

not exactly true. critics are real people like you and me. we're not supposed to know if they are "fans" from their review, cuz that would make them more biased. but I know for a fact that Colin Moriarty (critic from IGN) personally is a fan of the series.

There's phrasing in there that's problematic for me. Things that still make it sound like so much PR spin.

I want to believe he's talking about fixing the ending, but I can't. Not when he continues to laud how wonderful he thinks the ending is and how many critics have scored the game as a whole with x score, and asking us to tell our friends how awesome the game is. I hate to be That Guy, but I think he's just talking about DLC that's been planned all along and that they have no intention of doing anything to change the ending.

It's not really closure which I want.. I want that nonsensical ending to make some sense.

Space Magic is not an option.

I thought it was the best reply so far..This has taken them for a loop and their processing it..I'm sure there neck deep in DLC content creation and perhaps wading into a sequel with part of the team..Their are a lot of variables to consider with any potential changes..I think they are serous though and hurt it's hard to take a bad reaction about something this team must of worked so hard and passionately on. As much as the ending was a Gut kick for me it must be a worse feeling for this team to have this reaction..Have to have some compassion for these people..

"I personally believe Mass Effect 3 is the
best work we’ve yet created. So, it’s incredibly painful to receive
feedback from our core fans that the game’s endings were not up to their
expectations."

well it was incredibly painful and depressing for fans of the ME trilogy to see how the last 10 min could literally destroy everything that they all worked so hard to achieve.

So can we all agree now that the Indoctrination theory is wrong? BioWare gave us the real ending it just so happens that the ending is terrible.

Bah! It's more of the same doublespeak and obfuscation.

Fans: Why aren't we getting the DAII expansion?
Bioware: We're a business and have to put practicalities first.

Fans: Why can't you change this garbage ending I've just paid for?
Bioware: We're artists. Do not question our vision!

The important thing to take from this is that they will more than likely not make an ending like this ever, ever again. And regardless of what happens, that is all I want to know. If I invest my time again, give it a meaningful, logical, brilliant conclusion. Thanks, Ray, for giving a statement.

Honestly, after reading this I came away somewhat upbeat. They are obviously working on something to address our concerns regarding the ending, that's a good thing.

Still holding the line though, but I'm looking towards April with keen interest. Come on BioWare!

I actually think this is very hopeful. More importantly, it signifies an end to the "we're only listening" stance. I, for one, am excited and somewhat reassured. This isn't victory - but it's *a* victory in an ongoing campaign.

out of the few million people who bought the game and didn't complain, I would say those people who complained are a minority.

You mean the millions of people who didn't share their opinion?

Ray, ALMOST, you ALMOST made it right.
Although ray is finally attending our demands, saying that they rescheduled the DLC content and will have things to present on where it's going in PAX,his vision on what happened is still FAR AWAY from the reality, and our image is villainous on his statement. NOT RESPONSIBILIZING RAY FOR THIS DISTORTION, since I believe our image was distorted to get sympathy from him, by the developers that KNOW they screwed up EVERYTHING, SPECIALLY AND ABOVE ALL THE WAY THEY ADDRESSED US WITH MOCKERY.

Interesting side note. Anyone notice that the stuff addressing the endings issue, specifically the stuff directly from BioWare, is showing up on the Mass Effect 2 page on Facebook, but not their now primary Mass Effect page? I don't know if they're just not thinking about it or what, but it comes through as still playing a bit of a game, just like his statement.

I'll say this though, I'll be incredibly impressed if they manage to keep the current endings to "preserve artistic integrity" and still alter them to let the rest of us have something meaningful. I sure as heck don't have any idea how to pull that rabbit out of the hat.

"The passionate reaction of some of our most loyal players to the current endings in Mass Effect 3 is something that has genuinely surprised us. This is an issue we care about deeply, and we will respond to it in a fair and timely way. We’re already working hard to do that."

Out of the few million who bought the game and didn't say they liked it, there in a minority to.

Funny thing about people who don't speak up nether side can claim them.

Probably because out of those millions, there's also a lot of people who were disappointed by the endings but didn't give a s*** enough to actually complain about them.
