Uh, so maybe it's premature to pull my head out of my pit of nihilism, despair, and skepticism, but wow: "Building on their research, Exec Producer Casey Hudson and the team are hard at work on a number of game content initiatives that will help answer the questions, providing more clarity for those seeking further closure to their journey. You’ll hear more on this in April."

Seems more concrete than anything we've heard thus far...

He basically said that we're the minority, and that makes our opinions invalid.

But the 80 critics' opinions are more valid than the opinions of the 60,000+ fans who disagree.

out of the few million people who bought the game and didn't complain, I would say those people who complained are a minority.

Out of the few million who bought the game and didn't say they liked it, there in a minority to.

Funny thing about people who don't speak up nether side can claim them.

Probably because out of those millions, there's also a lot of people who were disappointed by the endings but didn't give a s*** enough to actually complain about them.

More along the line they just didn't care, for them it probably went "Ehh that sucked guess I'll just get some instore credit".

Kinda thing.

This is a good start, but I want John Riccitiello. I sold all my EA stock after this debacle and others have done the exact same.

We have become destructive rather than constructive? How about I can't even bring myself to play to the end in my second play-through as that "artistic" ending is so bad the ending isn't worth playing? This is hard, cold fact. No spin. Just cold, hard facts! The ending is THAT BAD!

It does not disprove the indoc theory any more than Hudson's earlier response did (i.e. it doesn't). If their plan was to announce it in April on PAX (one month from the first release date, makes sense), they're simply sticking to it and doing their best to keep the player base calm (relatively speaking).

"Building on their research, Exec Producer Casey Hudson and the team are hard at work on a number of game content initiatives that will help answer the questions, providing more clarity for those seeking further closure to their journey. You’ll hear more on this in April."

- those are the key words in the whole message.

I am amused by the appeal to artistic integrity. Where was this commitment to art when the Mass Effect team was being given an unrealistic timetable?

Art is a subjective thing, subject to interpretation and dependent upon perspective. The ending of the game, on the other hand, is objectively nonsensical, an empirically verifiable deviation from the story that has unfolded across the three games. Art cannot be wrong, even when it fails to please. I am a big believe that video games are--or at least can be--art. The ending of Mass Effect 3, however, is not art. It is, at best, paint-by-numbers. It is also unequivocally wrong.

or when they threw out the original story-line (that they had been building up too)
or when they dropped characters/story-lines
or when they ended the game with an appeal to fans to buy DLC
or when they reused multiplayer maps in single player (or vica-versa)
or when they planned DLC in general (I'm fine with DLC, I'm not fine with people using artistic integrity as a shield while simultaneously making games shorter so they can profit off post game content)

I don't mean to sound overly critical but I also don't really appreciate having high school rhetoric tactics thrown at me.

It's a nice message, and fairly encouraging.

Still pretty surprised that they're surprised over such a dismal ending - but okay.

Of course they have to try and imply that "most" people loved ME3 on the whole, but the letter wouldn't carefully address the other side as often as it does if that were truly the case.

I like this message, and I like BioWare. I have faith that they're going to rectify this mistake and make ME awesome again for everyone.

I agree completely.

Let's not be too cynical or critical. I have no doubt that when the dev team completed the ending we got, they genuinely believed it was a fitting end to the series, and I'm sure that the fan backlash has been pretty confusing and hurtful. From a purely corporate perspective, this kind of reaction is pretty unprecedented and is in some ways a "no win" situation where journalists are saying that Bioware would be selling out if it changed the ending while fans are calling the endings a betrayal of trust.

There was never going to be a statement coming out of Bioware that said, "Yeah, we decided that we suddenly didn't care about our flagship franchise so we huffed some airplane glue and then spent months working on the first idea that came to mind from that. So tomorrow, for free, you can download the Here's The Real Ending LOL  YAY DLC. Peace." I feel like that's what some people want to hear, and it really is unfair to Bioware.

They made a mistake. They're listening to fans and now we know that they're working on some additional content to address some of our complaints. That's more than I expected to hear at this point and is definitely good news.

Why do I get the feeling that they'll just add Shepard to the paradise planet scene and proclaim "see, we gave you a happy ending!" thus completely missing the point about it all making no sense?

The constant mention of "artistic integrity" worries me. It's similar to an excuse fans have been using that seems to imply if you declare something art then it is above criticism. I also worry what they consider constructive or destructive criticism. Ideally they would just consider people saying things like "the endings suck and Casey Hudson should be fired" destructive.

Ray, ALMOST, you ALMOST made it right.
Although ray is finally attending our demands, saying that they rescheduled the DLC content and will have things to present on where it's going in PAX,his vision on what happened is still FAR AWAY from the reality, and our image is villainous on his statement. NOT RESPONSIBILIZING RAY FOR THIS DISTORTION, since I believe our image was distorted to get sympathy from him, by the developers that KNOW they screwed up EVERYTHING, SPECIALLY AND ABOVE ALL THE WAY THEY ADDRESSED US WITH MOCKERY.

mmm demands is not a good chocie of wording, and honestly they can't come out and say "Sorry we screwed up" If they want to continue sales before this stuff is released. This will bomb and confidence they might have left from those who havent purchased yet. Overall reading back through what he said was pretty expected. He attempted to placate us, other fans and the reviewers all at once . .. kinda like walking along a razor.

I'm not gonna lie, validating an argument by comparing the response of critics vs. that of your most loyal consumers is a tad ridiculous. The average gamer approaches most game reviews w/ more than a touch of cynicism and takes what they find there w/ a grain of salt. Also the idea that ME3 was their "greatest" work borders a tad too close to the realm of hyperbole for me. Good game? Yes. Great game? For some (not me). Their best? No.

*shrug*

Oh also, did anyone else catch the part where they're getting really concerned about sales? He specifically asked fans to spread the word if the game was good "as a whole". He carefully used words that asked us if we loved 98% of the game and to talk it up based on that instead of the ending. I'm not angry with him for it or anything. To the contrary, I think it shows that this issue is having a serious effect on their sales figures and they're scrambling to undo that damage because we all know the lifespan of sales for a new game is generally only the first, what, 4-6 weeks? Interesting.

well it was incredibly painful and depressing for fans of the ME trilogy to see how the last 10 min could literally destroy everything that they all worked so hard to achieve.

Honestly, after reading this I came away somewhat upbeat. They are obviously working on something to address our concerns regarding the ending, that's a good thing.

Still holding the line though, but I'm looking towards April with keen interest. Come on BioWare!

They AREN'T WORKING according to the statement.
The statement says that they were ORDERED to have answers in April, and that should take our consideration.

The Executives ordered them to reschedule the DLCs and that's what I said would happen all along.

I want to congratulate and thank the protesters that returned their copies, because without any doubt that was the HEAVIEST WEIGHT on that decision. You people are heroes.

... I believe this proves that they never intended the Indoctrination theory to arise.

... Which proves my point that fans are really starting to grasp at straws.

UNLESS THEY ARE FOOLING US AGAIN.
And it really is an indoctrination theory.
Then again they could be doublefooling us and NOT give us an indoctrination theory ending but instead give us closure.

... Hmmm...

Well, it doesn't look like they're planning to do any major changes to the ending or provide an alternate one. Looks more like they will be adding to it/clarifying something here and there, which is, while not exactly what most of us wanted, a reasonable step at this time.

Anyway I'll just be holding the line here.

And of course dr Ray Ray opts to play coy. Fanbase verdict is clear, the coherent, logical and mature reviews were unanimously against the ending (Becky Chambers' piece on The Mary Sue and California Litereary the highlights here), logic of ending obliterated on all fronts, lies we've been fed confronted with facts, disrespect towards fans with Tali's face glaring, but he is so very surpised with fans' reaction and quick to mention good press mainstream reviewers who fans already consider either paid or playing nice with "giants" (even more so as they conveniently failed to mention destruction of franchise with endings).

Ugh.. hate this PR bull and getting so fed up with BioWare.

read the rest of the paragraph, he refers back to why he states this

"
We listen and will respond to constructive criticism, but much as we will not tolerate individual attacks on our team members, we will not support or respond to destructive commentary. "
