Wow - I never thought I would see the day where controvery over a video game was this news worthy (or that Bioware would be at the center of it). I guess we shall see if the concept of 'No such thing as bad publicity' holds true.

For me it all balls down to this: Mass Effect 3 up until the Reaper beam (you know what I'm referring to if you beat the game) was in my opinion awesome. Everything else after the Reaper beam was...how do I say this lightly....BS and should not have gone down the tubes the way it did. I can't wait to see how they are going to handle this.

Agreed though for me it'd be after Starchild.

When ME2 was the way it was, I accepted that. When DA2 was the way it was, I accepted that. When SWTOR was the way it was, I accepted that. Mass Effect 3's ending, bugs, and PR handling are unacceptable. Bioware employees should be ashamed.

That's one of their tech/game reviewers. Of course he's going to write pieces on games at the moment.

I am very happy to see Bioware taking to heart the constructive criticism and fan needs. I also defend the artistic ideas behind ME3 and, although I haven't finished it yet, I'm putting my faith in their team's abilities to create something great.

That said... my only regret with Mass Effect in general is that I'm not able to romance with my fem Shep the options I though are most appealing (Tali and/or Miranda), but that's another matter altogether.

I urge you to do your own research: play
the game, finish it and tell us what you think. Tell your friends if
you feel it’s a good game as a whole.

That's just it: I can't in good faith tell my friends I feel this game is good as a whole. That's just how much of an injustice the ending is to the entire franchise. Yes, the rest of the game was amazing, that much I think a lot of people here will stand by.

However, the ending is so riddled with inconsistences and things that fly so far in the face of everything the game was screaming at us the entire time (the "theme" of each ending contrasts everything we've heard and been told the entire game) that it has echoed through the entire Mass Effect experience. The lack of player choices meaning anything in the end also kills it. Being a good friend I can't recommend this game to them because I know they'll feel similar to how I do about the ending.

So I'm going to have to disagree with Dr. Muzyka's assessment that "it's a good game as a whole." I feel it's a good game in part. That part being everything before the ending.

I've been buying Bioware games for years and I think they make the best games in the industry. With such a talented roster of developers I'm hopeful that they can come up with something that everyone (developers and fans) can be satisfied with. Bioware's never let me down before, I don't see why this will be any different (what can I say? I'm a "glass half full" kinda guy).

EDIT: Removed spoilers since this isn't the spoiler section.

While I accept the idea that it is art, popular art at best, I do not accept that the ending was anything other than a rushed addendum to the gameplay and if it was a film then the focus group would have pointed out the flaws.

I like many cannot even import our existing characters properly, and having played the game though wonder if without a better crafted conclussion to the game that I will ever both to replay or purchase anything further for this series.

I am not sure that I want to wait until 1st May for some action to be seen to be in place!

On a poll here about 98% of those that voted said the ending was not up to scratch, not a minority unless you assume not voting is a vote for the end as is. (Even governments dont assume that)
Most pollsters would assume a huge problem if a sample that big (60kish) gave those sort of results!

You cannot believe a word written by a professional critic anymore as they have a vested interest in retaining advertising revenues, reviews copies etc. 95% of the game is not perfect, from import character and graphic glitches to control problems (on PC), ignoring the fact that the PC version is a console port which could have had better control bindings and higher resolution texture!

With an ending that made sense with the existing lore, didnt revert back to plot threads that 3 games tried to dispel, didnt have massive holes where the players team is concerned etc. it is badly flawed and ruins 5 years of my time.
Deus Ex Machina arnt what gamers want, I accept that every game company has decided that Boss fights are out at the moment, but 20mins of nothing leading to R/G/B big bang :(

The removal of mulitplayer, third party apps etc. from affecting the single player campaign, unless the user chooses them to do so, would also help.

If you want to build on the research, then the first thing that is needed is to start asking questions here, not on facebook or twitter but amongst the community you are trying to develop!

And when asking questions ask the HARD question not the PR: which of thee following non-options do you want...

Also critics dont pay for the games, gamers do, which one actually matters to you in the long run?

I find Forbes' article very very good on this:

But the plethora of positive professional reviews are less helpful by far than much of the ‘destructive’ commentary BioWare faces. Truth rarely lies in what we want to hear. Dozens of fawning reviewers tripping over one another to offer up their perfect scores hardly encourage BioWare to improve. “Look how exceptional our game is! We appreciate your concern and we are listening, but by the way did you notice all these perfect scores we just received? You’re delusional, but we care.”

(...)

As far as Muzyka’s apology goes: It’s better than nothing, but any apology with a “but” at the end should be taken with a hefty spoonful of sea salt. After all, when has “I’m sorry, honey, but…” ever worked?

http://www.forbes.co...ending-sort-of/

Forbes are clearly capitalizing on having become the favourite publication of the Retake movement (which means ten of thousand of clicks more every day), but you know what? They always make sense and write intelligent observations, so kudos to them. Love the part about the "destructive" criticism. Of course you shouldn't attack people on a personal level, but on the work itself? You don't have to be "gentle" to a product or a work process, or worse a corporation.

Just because Ray said they are working on a solution this does not mean they fix the ending, i already see people with messages like ''i replay mass effect 3 because i am happy they do something''

This is exactly what they are planning to do, it's a market bussiness so the sales for Mass Effect 3 won't go down but go up instead. They give you another ''promiss'' about something and yet i don't think they can fix it.

no. im just stating something that is clearly obvious and if you have actually read the article well you would know that he pretty much says that hes gonna *give* enclosure to certain stuff he never mentions anything about providing a different ending / choices to us. just an explanation doesnt seem fair enough to me, again im being respectful.

Indeed it does.

I must admit to a longtime fear of urls to jpgs.  I STILL half expect GOATSE.

GOATSE would be a better ending than what we have so far though.

I think, honestly, that Mr. Muzyka missed the point of all of this.  First, he keeps insinuating that the people that want either the ending changed, or expanded upon are the minority.  He also says that '75 critics' gave this game perfect or near perfect reviews.

Well, first of all, the people that want things to change are not the minority.  It's the majority.

Secondly, those critics often didn't finish the game before jumping on the 'entitled' fans.

Thirdly, those particular critics work for the big review companies which, honestly, have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo...note how they come down on games that come from companies that don't offer them 'incentives', while they love games from companies that do.  The independant reviewers and those outside the game industry, such as Forbes, are much better indicators because they're much more honest.

He then goes on about 'artistic integrity'...when we have two clear instances of work being snatched from somewhere else (the end sequence with the old man and the young boy...the background for that is 'Space Winter'...it already existed prior to the game).  So, really, he can't use that argument.

Now, I've already sent a message off to him with my idea for expanding the game ending (this was before I iknew about this thread)  and in his post he asks for constructive opinion...thus, I shall re-iterate here.

I support the indoctrination theory as both making the most sense compared to what we have, and as the easiest way for Bioware to solve this issue.

How, you might ask?

By expanding on the endings.  It's really very simple:

Ending A, or the Blue ending:  Shepard is fully indoctrinated.  There can be a bit of gameplay where, say, Garrus (or perhaps the love interest) rallies everyone back to the fight, keeps everything going...until a final, climatic battle against the indoctrinated Shepard.  This battle would be very similar to the final battle against Saren; perhaps having Harbinger assuming direct control of Shepard.  To win, you have to defeat Shepard within a certain amount of time, otherwise Harbinger has enough time to get to the Crucible and destroy it.  The more war assets you have, the more things there are between Harbinger and the crucible, and the more time you have to accomplish this (this could be reflected by a cinematic scene, similar to how you did the fleet battle bit over Earth).

If you win, we queue into that video, and the fleet manages to keep Harbinger and any escorts he might have from reaching the crucible, allowing the weapon to fire and disable every reaper in the Sol system, and then this signal gets relayed through the Mass Relays on a grand scale, doing the same for every solar system that -has- a relay.  Queue epiloque sequence with LI and the crew mourning Shepard's loss...but queue other sequences showing how the Galaxy is working together better than before...maybe Krogan diplomats being eyed oddly as they approach the council chambers...things like that.  Be sure to include what the crew is all doing.

If you lose, well...we see Harbinger muscle through the fleet and destroy the cruicible.  Fade to black...the sound of digging, and finally we see an alien being of some kind reach towards the camera.  Zoom out, and we see that it's a group of aliens (previously unknown) pulling out Liara's time capsule.  The one who dug the box out and hands it to another....maybe do something to leave the 'audience' the impression that this is a new cycle's Shepard.

Ending B, or the Green Ending:  If this option is chosen, Shepard is indoctrinated...but is aware of the fact, and is actively trying to resist it.  This sequence is similar to the Blue ending one outlined, with the rallying and all that jazz, but this time when it comes to the final battle, you have a chance of talking Shepard down...if you have enough Paragon or Renegade points built up, he/she manages through force of will (reinforced by dialogue from his/her LI and/or Garrus) to break the indoctrination...however, the cybernetics he/she's riddled with react violently to the loss of the indoctrination 'signal', permenantly crippling him/her...but he/she's alive.

In this situation, you now have to distract Harbinger long enough through various means (maybe calling in orbital strikes and/or running for those mobile missile launchers, basically pouring on a lot of firepower to prevent him from actually leaving to destroy the crucible) until the crucible is activated.  Have it also possible to kill him, just make it difficult...your war assets increase the firepower available to you to keep him pinned.

If you -don't- have enough renegade or paragon, Shepard pulls his/her side arm up and tries to shoot him/herself a-la Saren...but then Harbinger assumes direct control, and the boss fight mentioned previously occurs.  This time, however, if you manage to defeat Shepard in the allotted time, he/she doesn't die right away...he/she has time to thank his/her 'saviors' for freeing her.

Victory scenarios for green:

-In the case of Shepard dying, queue an ending sequence much the same as the blue one.

-If he/she lives, then have at least one scene with his/her LI and him/her, living through an ordinary day...of course, have him/her in a wheelchair or something to emphasize that he/she was crippled.  Other than that, pretty much the same as blue victory.

Loss in green should be the same cinematic sequence and epilogue sequence as in the Blue ending.

Ending C, or Red ending:  Shepard is alive, and free of indoctrination.  He/she rallies the troops and makes another push against the reapers.  In this sequence, include dialogue between Shepard and Harbinger.  The end battle will be between Shepard and Harbinger, similar to the 'keep him distracted' sequence in the Green ending outline...only this time, rather than just distract, Shepard is playing for keeps...and so is Harbinger.

This would be the point that Harbinger realizes that Shepard is a much greater threat than he had ever perceived, and is now making a personal effort to crush him/her.  This should be the hardest boss fight; Harbinger is going all out in an attempt to take Shepard down...but it should also be the most rewarding to complete.

In this situation, you have two options; wait until the crucible fires...or take down Harbinger.  The greater your fleet assets, the more firepower you bring to bear on him...and this time, to make it different from the Green boss fight sequence, have support fire coming from points where the player cannot reach...like Mako's and Hammerheads doing drive-by strikes, ground forces using heavy weapons...sometimes when using the fleet targetter, having fighters swoop down and strafe vital points on Harbinger's frame.

In the end, after you win, this should be the best possible ending sequence.  The crucible fires, disabling all reapers in systems with mass relays.  Have Shepard finally say 'enough's enough, I'm done' and retire with his/her love interest in an appropriate location (sequence in the epilogue), and so on...

In all the ending sequences that are positive, make damn sure that you include the outcomes of major decisions, as well as what the crew is doing.

AND, you'll note, I made it very easy for Reapers to still exist, to still be a threat...after all, they weren't all hanging around systems with relays, were they?  This keeps it open for new games in the same universe with a continued, if fairly dimished, Reaper threat.

This is but one way to make things right, and imo the easiest.  Again, this is just my opinion on the matter.  In the end, Mr. Muzyka needs to realize that the endings as they stand now are not works of art, but pale imitations of what this series could be.

That's all; that's my reaction.

At this point EA/Bioware are in full blown damage panic/control. They are starting to understand that this goes beyond the ending of ME3 and that due to the backlash the ME brand has been damaged and other EA products may feel fallout from this mistake. They have turned fans against them and fans against other fans. Also, the game was put on sale this weekend on the Microsoft Online store for $40 with free shipping. Not a good sign.

Will I purchase anymore product from EA/Bioware? Who knows?

Lesson learned from all of this. When you provide a story driven game and then end it with SPACE MAGIC you might be shooting yourself for doing so.
