Bug report: black screen after epilogue
#1
Posté 21 mars 2012 - 03:10
I've deinstalled the game on the hdd and disabled cloud saving (wasn't in use anyways) but it still keeps happening!
I really love the Mass Effect series, huge fan since Mass Effect 1 and I thoroughly enjoyed playing them all so this is really shocking for me that I can't continue my journey now!
SO:
Does anyone please know a way to fix this?
OR:
Please Bioware give us ASAP an update for this!!!

Its a problem with EA and the Gamertags. No home remedies. Sorry.
Muhaha but there IS a home remedy! I just figured out what the problem is.As we have all suspected, it is related to the gamertag and a file that ME3 creates to go along with it. Each profile has a directory on whatever your storage media is (hdd, usb, etc.) Your profile has multiple subdirectories with saves, and also a location with a .gpd files containing info on all of the games you have played. This ME3 .gpd file is the problem. When you redownload your profile it redownloads all of the .gpd files from MS.
**Follow these steps at your own risk!! By following these instructions you take responsibility for anything that may happen to your profile / gamertag.**
1) I removed my hdd, downloaded my profile to internal memory and copied the profile to a USB stick. I tried loading ME3 after this and got the frozen black screen. On to step 2.
2) Moved USB stick to my pc to look at the files. (If you know how to use USB Xtaf Xplorer I'd suggest using it to extract the profile and make a backup of it before messing around on the stick.)
2) Now, I wasn't able to find a way to get to the contents of this file directly. You will need a profile editor like the Horizon tool (google it.)
3) Open Horizon, go to Tools > Device Explorer. It should find your flash drive. Expand Gamer Profiles, select your profile, then click the little gear to the upper right of the window (Open in Package Manager).
4) This will show your profile details. Do NOT change anything here. Click contents to display all of the package files specific to the profile. We're looking for the Mass Effect 3 package, which is 4541095D.gpd. Right click this, extract, and back it up somewhere. Now right click it and delete it.
5) Click Save, Rehash, and Resign. Skipping this may result in a corrupt profile. YOu'll get a confirmation once the profile is saved.
6) Place flash drive back in Xbox, REMOVE NETWORK CABLE, and power up. You should be able to play ME3 with your profile. It will create a new package file on your profile, and if you move your save from your HDD to the flash drive you can even load your gamesaves.
7) Enjoy Mass Effect 3 single player.
***Problems***
I connected to Xbox Live and the game downloaded the 4 MB update. I then got the message that I had played the game on a different console and it immediately locked up. I believe BW checks the contents of the .gpd file or attempts to write values to it right after the omni-tool scene, because after the first lockup I deleted the .gpd file again, disconnected from the Internet and was able to play again (game creates a new .gpd). I connected the ethernet cable, rebooted the xbox, and got the dreaded black screen right after the omni-tool scene. Unfortunately this means MP is still out of the question right now. I will send all of this info to Bioware, I like to hope that if I figured this out in one night they certainly already had it figured out and are working on finding out what their game is doing to this .gpd file. I will keep investigating myself. If anyone else wants to attempt this, let us know if you're successful.
This really sucks. Also because of this I can't make any new saves. When I load a game it complains that I have a corrupt save that needs deleting. Yeah, um No.

Mine was also freezing every time I tried to enter the shooting range, which meant I did all my shooting in the field!
It also had a problem with the armor locker, where it wouldn't freeze but it would just continue to load. I could still change everything, but couldn't see what it did until I "save and exit" then opened it up again. Still no visual though.
I have both disk installed to my HHD and I take very good care of my disks, so it worried me when I was having these freezes. Texture delays I can deal with, but not when I have to start a whole mission over again.
Should I post this info elsewhere?

They are probably working on it so I hope it won't take long.
It would've been nice if there was a quick workaround for it though..
BTW: I don't think BW should alter their endings, if you think about it, what other options have you got in the end? What would be an option? Eating the reapers or something?
Although I do agree with some that they should've used the choices you have made in the previous games, like for example: I put Anderson in the council in ME1, why is it Udina in ME3?
And if you've killed the rachni queen in ME1, let it remain dead in ME3 and leave you without her support would've been more realistic I think and increases the replay value for all 3 games!
And one more thing: I really missed the mako and the free exploring from ME1.
I do hope that BW makes another game (a prequel or like 1000 years later or something) because I really enjoyed playing all 3 games, I like the storyline, the views on planets, the gameplay, the emotions they put into conversations etc..
So BW: first release an update on this annoying bug and then start working on another one!

After the epilogue I get the pad that I can continue my game and play future dlc etc. and then my game just goes to a black screen (of death!) and doesn't reset to just before "the point of no return" like it should.

I made a thread here about it: http://social.biowar...0226/1#10493442
There's actually a lot more people than I thought having this issue. It seems that some of us are having no problems at all with the game until past the epilogue.

Short answer > NOTt a .gpd file issue like originally thought. Tried that and failed
The contents within the my Main Shepard career are incorrect when compared to my 4 other Shepards.
My main Shepard save is an import from ME1 > ME2 > ME3. So he has been around the galaxy, Such a man****!
The contents of this Main profile only contain the Save_0001.xbsav - Save_0032.xbsav. My others contain ChapterSave.xbsav and AutoSave.xbsav (if you have AutoSave enabled).
The file that is written at the Epilogue is LegendSave.xbsav.
So the only way i was about to resolve the Black screen after the Epilogue was to start ALL OVER ! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! .
I'm sorry i wasn't able to find a better way that that.
I even tried copying an another of my Shepard Profiles ChapterSave.xbsav and no dice either.

Getting exactly the same problem here. Tried disconnecting from Xbox Live and clearing my console cache but still got the same error. Not prepared to mess about with the gamertag stuff. Just hoping for a patch or at least an acknowledgement some time soon.
I hear ya. What you did was the first thing I tried. Nothing like playing for 60hrs finding all of the items/missions talking to people, and you can't continue to the next play through.
beyond frustrating. But, we can still play ME3. Many other here can't, and would be happy to be in our situation.

Oh god, I completely agree. Not being able to NG+ is inconvenient, sure. I'm so grateful that I can still play the game unlike some people.

Another problem:
I saw that my master and commander achievement didn't unlock although I had an effective military score of +6000!
Played the multiplayer 'till I got the defender achievementand then started the ending in single player.
Anyone else have problems with this or are there other requirements for it to unlock?

I found a way to NG+ my career for the time being whilst we're waiting for Bioware to fix the fault.
I moved my save to my USB drive and extracted the autosave from before the final choice. Opened it in Gibbed's new ME3 save editor and changed the game finished variable from not finished to survived (Lived to see another day or something along those lines.). This worked. I just started my insanity run in NG+.
Obviously that's all at your own risk stuff. If you go down that route then make sure to keep a backup copy of your career before you change anything.

- What were you doing in the last play session before the crash (MP, SP, level, etc.)?
[SP]
- Did you crash or make a save during your last play session?
[Yes, prior to assault on geth base]
- Do you recall any odd behavior during your last play session (temporary errors, anything out of place/acting weird)?
[When entering geth base, all weapons that were previously equipped, were unequipped. Also longer loading screens, almost appeared freezing for short time spans]
