Greetings!

I've just recently hit level 16 and have just completed the Urn of Andraste quest.  I'd say my travels have gone fairly well, but recently I've been having a lot of trouble with mana, stamina and staying alive, hehe.  My party consists of me (2H Warrior), Alistair (Tank), Leliana (Ranged DPS/Bard) and Wynne (Healer).

I think my character does decent damage, but Leliana is simply lacking.  Wynne constantly runs out of mana and Alistair is getting pummeled.

I tried to take on the Dragon from the "Mountain Top", but keep dying when it's about 1/4 dead.

Am I doing something wrong?  I thought I had my tactics set up well, but am not absolutely sure.  My character is wearing the Dragon DLC armor and Alistair is wearing the Warden's Keep armor.

Thanks for the help!

I think you are lacking a dps/hex mage. I had Morrigan set up as a CC / Hex / DPS mage.
With all the sleep / nightmares / mass paralyze / mass freezes she kept dealing the game became so much easier.
My setup was:
PC Human Noble 2 handed warrior, fully setup as dps but also tanking.
Wynne setup as a healer,
Morrigan setup as a Goddess!
Leliana setup as a useless bard / ranger, who I kept around because she was just 2 cute to ignore, and I couldn't leave all those chests locked!

for that particular encounter I stocked up on potions, made sure my party was scattered, and the dragon was facing my tank, away from the other 3 party members, trying to avoid as much AOE damage as possible.
It took several attempts but after a lot of pausing / potions he finally went down, this was on normal difficulty.

What difficulty level are you playing at ?

Don't rely only on Wynne for healing, health potions can help too.

Leliana is mostly there to provide the buff of her song of courage, but if you give her a good bow she should be able to contribute nicely to party damage.

Make sure Alistair is running shield wall and you are running indomitable.

Other than that... it may boil down to a lack of character optimization (poorly distributed stats, insuficient equipment). It sounds like you are not doing enough damage and/or are taking much more than you should.

Also, what difficulty setting are you playing at ?

Thanks for the replies!

I'm playing Normal. I've got Alistair up to 38 Str and the rest in Dex, then Con. My main 2H Warrior has about 50 Str and the rest in Dex/Con. I just realized, after reading a post on archery here, that I've raised Leliana's Dex way too high. Right now it's about 38 or so. I also raised her Str to 22, which may not have been the best idea.

You hit the nail on the head, I'm definitely not doing enough damage and receiving too much. I think I need a lot more potions...

For this fight, unless you have some great fire resists on Alistair you may be better off using Shale as your tank and fitting him with a large fire crystal. Shale keeps aggro much better than Alistair does, too.

Make sure the dragon is facing away from everyone but your tank.

Consider equipping your hero with a crossbow and keeping him at range. Yes, your DPS goes way down, but your DPS taken goes way down too.

I beat the High Dragon relatively easily with a mage hero and Shale, Leliana, and Wynne.

On my latest playthrough I did this on normal without a mage. PC sword and shield, Alistair, Leliana and Ohgren. No particular strategy involved, just brute force and a dozen of health potions. The 3 warriors just locked down the dragon while being immune to knockdown and could simply absorb the dragon's grab attack through sheer toughness. I think the dragon spit fire like once and the damage was unimpressive.

The team was level 18 at the time, though, because first time I came to this area I was much lower level, which may have made the encounter much easier than it should. But then again I did Gaxkang with the exact same team and also found it surprisingly easy...

If you really can't do it you may want to come back after the landsmeet.

For Leliana, I don't think you messed up anything. Just make sure you raise her cunning score from now on, that's what increases the power of her bard song.

As is often the case, Cone of Cold is your win button here. Sub Morrigan for the Bard, have her stand just close enough for the CoC to affect the beastie, and it'll spend half the fight frozen in place. (Vulnerability hex also makes a nice booster for the direct damage spells and staff attacks that Morry and Wynne should use when they're not healing the party or freezing the dragon.)

I don't know if this was intended, but I killed them all in the wyrmling cave before going mountaintop. She never attacked (until I blew the horn when I reloaded and Wynne kept healing and tossing back potions like mad, but everyone except Dog went down, but a couple of hits and she went just before he was going to).

I'm going to wager a guess that not killing her causes some kind of endgame dialog change, but I don't know. I'll leave her alive next time.

I used the same party pretty much and just swapped Leliana for Morrigan.

Cone of Cold and Force Field trivializes every encounter in the ENTIRE game.

I'm in danger? Force Field.

I need to prevent some damage while still able to kill what I am CCing? Cone of Cold.

Just remember to use a stun or KD if someone gets grabbed.

I had Leiliana in my party and won just fine. It was me (fighter), I think I had the dwarf or the dog with me, Lei and Wynn.

Controlling Wynn was key for me. The Wynn AI kinda sucks, even when you attempt to tweak it. For example, you can tell it to have her drink some mana potion when she's empty, but if you do that, then she sucks it all up needlessly. Otherwise, she runs out of mana and sits there pinging the dragon with her wand. So the only real option is take over Wynn as your primary in the fight and let the others go AI, or if you multi-task well, then control each of them (FTW).

If you get a to a dragon fight and are low on Health/Mana potions, then either load an older game and go shopping first, or get ready to die a lot.

Just did it again. Nightmare. 3 (unknockable) warriors + Leliana, 14 health poultices, no one came remotely close to dying, and the damn thing didn't even try to use its fire breath. It was barely more difficult than in normal.

Forcefield, Wynne and cone of cold are overrated :P

My party and I holed up in that ruined stone gazebo just outside of the cave. The dragon couldn't get all the way in. PC, Alistair, Leliana used bows, Morrigan her staff for the most part. PC and Alistair occasionally went at it with swords but would fall back to bows for a while after a buffet or when the dragon was spitting flame. Took a while to finish but it worked well and didn't use many health potions either.
