Dear Bioware,
Having just read Dr. Muzyka's newest statement on the "ME ending controversy" and the dialogue between Bioware and ME fans, I wanted to express my deepest respect for you. I am delighted and proud to call myself your fan. Not only is the personal gaming experience created by ME unprecented, but also your connection with the players and your dedication to further personalize the gaming experience you've created.
I'm an adult in my 30s. Reading/writing/watching/playing in a sci-fi context has been my life for over two decades. I consider the universe of Mass Effect to be the most complex, most consistent, most fascinating and best designed sci-fi setting I've ever encountered. Even when compared to such giants as Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica or even Firefly. Mass Effect is my Star Wars and it's indeed the Star Wars of this whole generation. Thank you very much for letting us into this universe.
It pains me greatly to part with Shepard and her crew. I grew attached to them in a way no other game has ever made me feel. I can't even say goodbye to a friend properly, but Shepard is much more than that. She's a part of me. Still, I accept that the trilogy is at its end. I've cried many times over the course of ME3 and they were good tears. I knew this would be the last of Shepard's adventures and still I wasn't prepared emotionally to let my heroine simply become history. She may have become the legend she'll surely be in the future games set in ME universe, but she's very much still a part of me. And a part of countless millions of other players.
I imagine this is why, to our (fans') shame, some in our community have been feeding you a lot of unconstructive feedback. There is a lot of drama in all of this. Please don't take it personally and instead consider it your success. Your fantastic creation has connected with your fanbase on the level invoking the strongest emotions imaginable.
Having played all three ME games many a time, I find it unacceptable to criticise ME3 for its endings. The Reaper War was going to be devastating - we all knew it. I'm heartbroken to see ME3 finish the way it did and were I given a choice, I'd prefer to see a slightly different ending. One that doesn't destroy the whole universe I grew to love so much. An ending that doesn't clearly say (through the destruction of the Relays) "the ME universe as you knew it has ended". I think, deep inside, I was prepared to let Shepard go, but I was never ready to part with the whole ME world.
However, as far as the game's artistic direction goes, and considering your potential plans for the future games set in ME universe, I believe I understand why you chose this particular way for the series to end.
I also realize that, even though ME games are all based on choice and personalized experience, there must be a canon ending somewhere there, which can be used as a basis for your future books and video games.
I look forward to your further dialogue with the fans and to the future works set in the ME universe. Thank you very much for letting me be a part of this unique experience.
And, as it arguably appears that all fans are nowadays entitled to demand actions from the artists responsible for their gaming experience, I would like to raise a request. Have you guys considered releasing a (pen&paper)roleplaying book set in the ME universe? Or at least a lorebook containing all the codexes and beyond? I hear there is a Dragon Age roleplaying game being released and, frankly, I have this big dream of one day being able to lay my hands on a Mass Effect roleplaying game book.
Thank you very much for all your hard work, dedication and love for the ME series. The critics and all those perfect scores talk for themselves. Enjoy your massive success!
