For starters like alot of people I've been a hardcore fan of the series, 188 hours played in the original mass effect and 280 played on mass effect 2, Unfortunately I've still only completed one play of 3. Despite thoroughly enjoying the game and a part of my brain plotting which character to start a new game on the original mass effect to take through the entire series right up until I charged the beam.

And to ask a question about the beam that nails you, I've read left and right people are convinced its harbinger. Is that the general idea? To be honest I was looking forward to some sort of showdown with harbinger for the majority of the game since you realize at the end of 2 that it was a reaper controlling the collectors and he seems to have a particular fascination/hatred for shepard. I don't know if I missed some tip that told you thats who was shooting at you, All I remember them saying is there are several "Sovereign" class reapers descending to earth, and massive they may be it did hint that harbinger was the largest and a class all of his own. I'll admit hearing the creepy "Assuming control" voice on some sort of evil godlike scale taunting you as you dodge beams would've brought another level of epic to that part.

Ok back to where I was going, I charge the beam.. mostly intact, complete the game and its wide and diverse color schemes followed by the speechless shock that turned into dissapointment, safe to say I am onboard with alot of the fans on my feelings for the ending, I felt it rushed with a lack of closure and a considerable amount of wtf thats ridiculous mixed in for flavor but the exact hows and why's it feels wrong have been poured over and said much more clearly than I could hope to accomplish already.

The only way I can jusitify it in my mind or salvage it is to take a bad dream approach to the ending as it stands, shepard knocked unconscious by the beam and this going on in your head before your team rouses you and you continue onto a conclusion fitting of the epic that is the mass effect series as a whole. At least thats what I'm going to tell myself to justify new plays that I promptly save and consider done just prior to rushing the beam, I don't have any delusions something like this would be implemented but at least in my mind it certainly beats the alternative.
