Some think he's whiny, most of us think he's cute. I think it's all a matter of perspective. I tried playing a male character and HE truly can't see what it is the women are all gushing about. But to us girls, he is the best thing that ever happened to RPGs.

I have to admit though, even for someone in love with him, Alistair does have his bad moments - conversations you wish you never had with him or eavesdropped on.

Like this random dialogue with Wynne asking her to mend his shirt, in a little boy tone of voice that made me want to smack him in the head.

Wynne: Can't you mend your own clothes? Why do I have to do it?
Alistair: Sometimes I pick up too much fabric and it ends up all puckered and the entire garment hangs wrong afterward. And you're... you know, grandmotherly. Grandmothers do that sort of thing, don't they? Darning socks and whatnot. You don't want me to have to fight darkspawn in a shirt with a hole, do you? It might get bigger. I might catch cold.

What's yours?

As a guy I just find it irritating that he constantly reminds you that he's a virgin at any warning of intimacy. It makes me want to reach through the screen and smack him, but maybe that's just a guy thing, maybe females find it endearing.

Sometimes I want to punch him right in the mouth for being so hopeless.

The one where he talks to Wynne about scratching his wound. I almost forgot when I had to tell him what to say when he gives his first speech as King before you fight the dark spawn. It really brought home the fact that I would have to be the puppet master in this relationship.

Personally, I'd prefer that he fight the darkspawn shirtless... ::whistle::

"Not listening! La la la la la..." (when Zevran starts giving him sex advice)

Yeah. I'm sure that's exactly what girls like in a man. (sarcasm)

Meh, I never got this "grow up, boy" reaction to him. I think it's really cute for a man to show some feeling and vurnerability.

I think it's a cultural thing, but everytime he brings up how he misses Duncan, my first instinct is to help him douse his grief in the pleasures of the flesh. :innocent:

LOL, seriously!  I was like "Dude, you need to score some vellum and start taking notes!" at that part :P

The only part with him that really irritated me was the whole Landsmeet crisis segment if you spared Loghain.

On my human noble, after the whole betrayal thing, then the whole Ostagar omgeveryonedied, getting shot at by Darkspawn (and actually hit and injured!), rescued by a witch, talked into taking her bratty daughter and then its.

"Lead on, I wont argue."

No no, I'm not the junior member of the order, you got 6 months seniority, get to work! Some of us are over here plotting revenge/being bitter/whatever.

Same.  It's the Carth problem all over again-- you get an early companion with more experience and (sometimes) competence than your PC.  This is great for providing exposition and survivability in the introductory levels, but Bioware hasn't yet come up with a satisfying reason why that NPC cedes to the player's decisionmaking.  It makes the player feel like his/her character is wearing a giant "PROTAGONIST" label, visible only to other in-game characters, rather than being a part of a naturally flowing story.

"Swooping.... is baaaad."

Alistair: "You.. you.. you filthy... witch-thief!"
Morrigan "How very eloquent..."

I think Morrigan serves best in pointing out Alistair's stupidity, and still. I love him

Well, in the case of KotOR (both KotOR I and II, actually), it kind of makes sense because you learn that your PC is essentially a born leader and has qualities that draw people to him/her.  That actually winds up being an important plot point.  Whether or not people find that satisfying...up to them.  I'm personally fine with it.
In the case of DA, Alistair just doesn't want to take the lead--the idea of it obviously scares him.  Again, I'm fine with that, but I understand how people see through it as well.

I totally get your overall point, even though being the default leader doesn't bother me in the slightest.
