Initially I was extremely put off by Mass Effect 3. I went through nearly 24 hours of troubleshooting and EA tech support just to get Origin working, and then another 4-5 hours altering my BIOS to deal with some seriously horrific framerate issues. Once that was sorted out and I dealt with my frustration, I jumped into the game with a positive attitude and an open mind despite my anger.

What I found was that I actually had  a blast playing Mass Effect 3. In fact, it’s probably my favorite game of the entire series. Bioware managed to strike a great balance between the RPG elements in the first game and the high intensity shooting of the second. The story flowed well and the overarching threat of the end of the galaxy really came through. The music was fantastic and set the theme unbelievably well (but I mean, it’s Clint Mansell.) The characters as always were fantastic and I honestly teared up a couple times in the game. The finale was epic, I was glued to my seat and stayed up way past when I should have gone to sleep to get it done. The cinematic value of the last two hours of the game is film-worthy. However, when it finally comes to the very end and last decision of the entire series, I was pretty bummed. It felt like a thinly veiled lack of a meaningful choice. I feel like the ultimate outcome of each decision is pretty much the same. But, The ending wasn't nearly enough of a let down to ruin the game or the series for me.

When all is said and done, it was a fantastic game and remains my favorite game series and one of my favorite fictional universes of all time. I’ll miss Shepard and the crew, and hope you make more games in the Mass Effect universe.
