You know, deep down, my anger of the endings is not that they are bad (and I do think they are), but what was said PRIOR to release by Mac and Casey. I am not sure what it is called at Bioware when someone states something that they KNOW to be untrue in order to hype sales, but I was raised to understand that it was called LYING.
Now if the ending was just bad (as it is) I can live with that because my take on it is that Shepard and his team were hit by a reaper blast and died. The entire last part from when you 'wake' up is his dying mind letting go, allowing him to save everyone and making sure his friends are okay. That is why there are so many inconsistencies and space magic involved. Then the 5000 pt ending of his gasp is the last breath as he finally dies. This does not make a bittersweet ending, it is just bitter. But I can live with bitter. My shepard was predestined to fail. No matter what lengths I went to, no matter what allies I acquired - fate had determined that I would fail. For this reason I cannot bring myself to play any of my ME games anymore - why play when you know you are going to fail? But I can respect that ending.
For me, in DA:O the absolute best ending was the self sacrifice. All of the others did not have the same emotional impact to me. I can deal with Shepard dying if he actually won, but you do not get to win. That is sad to me, but if that is the 'vision' of the series I can live with it.
What I do not respect is how the developers purposely misstated the truth about the ending. Sure they want sales, but getting sales via false statements is unethical to me. They knew the endings were the way they were. They even made them so that there would be 'endless speculation', yet they told the press/fans that they would NOT be giving us a LOST ending where nothing is really clear. We were told ALL of our questions would be answered - they were not. We were told that there would be many VASTLY different endings, something never done before - yet there really is 5 possible endings: Indoctrination which leaves the game unfinished, Death which ends everything until the next cycle or the 3 pick your color endings that are 90% the same and involve large inconsistencies, plot holes and space magic.
In the end, I think the fan backlash is more a matter of the fact that Bioware lied to us than the fact the endings are so lame.

This kind of incident has happened at least several times with other games such as molyneux's fable (the first game) which has failed to fulfill the role as morrowind killer. But at that time the reaction was not as big as ME3. This shows that ME franchise has massive loyal fans who gave their hard earned money to support ME. I hope bioware realize that.
Btw, based on my observation, this is the third time bioware made serious mistake. First was on DA2, second on ME Novel, and third on this one. Make mistake once, we can forgive that, make mistake twice, we consumers should be on guard, third mistake, there is possibility that something is wrong in the company.

Assets need to matter.
Choices need varying and wide consequences.
The ability to sacrifice for other civilizations and potentially choose which live or die was promised to us.

In addition, bioware markets this (directly form their site) ‘Along the way, your choices drive powerful outcomes, including relationships with key characters, the fate of entire civilizations, and even radically different ending scenarios.’
Im still waiting for the radically different ending scenarios and knowing fate of entire civilizations

"Interview with Mac Walters (Lead Writer)
http://popwatch.ew.c...-3-mac-walters/
“[The presence of the Rachni] has huge consequences in Mass Effect 3. Even just in the final battle with the Reapers.”
lol, what a joke. The rachni didn't even have so much a as a cameo in the final fight. We also hardly see the krogan, geth, quarians, or turians. I expected much more of the final level. The whole game is gething these races, and there's very little payoff.

This is one of the reasons why I'm personally upset with BioWare. There's the inconsistencies and the stuff that doesn't make sense, sure, but when stuff like this is said a MONTH or two before the game is released... I just find that really messed up.
To quote Mike Gamble from that last link:
To quote Mike Gamble from that last link:
Entitled or not, THIS is what people expected because THIS is what they promised A MONTH before the game came out (going by the article date). THIS is what the ending was NOT.Whether you're happy or angry at the ending, know this: it is an ending. BioWare will not do a "Lost" and leave fans with more questions than answers after finishing the game, Gamble promised. "You'll get answers to everything. That was one of the key things. Regardless of how we did everything, we had to say, yes, we're going to provide some answers to these people."
