I'm on my second playthrough as a female human noble.  First playthrough was same race.

On my first playthrough I found Vaughn in the dungeon after killing Howe and was able to talk to him.  I set him free for the landsmeet.

On this playthrough after killing Howe, I cannot talk to Vaughn.  He's there in his cell but everytime I click on him I get this weird snoring sound and if I just stand there and watch him he kind of flails around like the hermit in the Brecelian forest.  What's up with this?  Bug?

Also...is Vaughn Howe's son?  I seem to remember something about this in the city elf origin but...what?

I believe Vaughan, aside from being a nasty, nasty man, is the Arl of Denerim's son.

As to your issue - sounds like a bug. Perhaps try zoning out and then back in again?

Vaughn is the son of the previous Arl of Denerim, who died at Ostagar.

He is the son of the previous arl afaik, Arl Urien, who died at Ostagar. You should he able to talk to him, after killing Howe and looting him.

I pretended to free him, persuaded him to give me the key to his treasure chest and then left him in his cell. Mwhahahaha :)

Oh okay thanks guys. The previous Arl. Right. That makes more sense. I'd forgotten that Howe just recently took over as Arl of Denerrim. That would explain why Vaughn is in the dungeon.

Weird little bug. Ha!

Howe's son is called Thomas.  As for Vaughn, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if he and Howe were related.

I killed Vaughn for being due to that elf's story about him raping his bride to be... Of course I did that after I got his key.

I can't remember, but when play as a non-city elf origin and you find Vaughn in the dungeon, do you find out at all about Vaughn raping Shianni? I don't recall ever knowing that and as such, I freed him because I wanted to secure the vote for the landsmeet. It was my first playthrough so I didn't know what would happen at the vote.

So is there any info about Vaughn being a rapist when you are deciding if you should release him?

I know that I never found out about it as a Dalish elf - though that doesn't mean you couldn't. I'm pretty sure I set him free, or was at least intending to. City elf killed him early on though, so no worries about it there. "What do you mean I'm an unarmored little elf lass? Watch me run all of you losers through!"

He acts very creepy when you meet him in his cell.

If you aren't playing the city elf origin, Soris is in the jail just down the hall in another cell. If you speak with him you can find out what happened.

It's metagaming, but Vaughan has lived exactly once with me. I felt so dirty about letting him live, that I reloaded an earlier save and stabbed him again.

The writers and voice actor did an excellent job of making me loathe that character.

If you talk to Soris beforehand (a male elf in the dungeon) and ask him why he is there, he tells you that the arl's son kidnapped his bride and he tried to rescue her but got knocked out.  Doesn't take much to figure it out from there.

I find that having played a city elf, I can't leave Vaughan alive for any amount of money or RP consistency.

As a human noble (or anything else, I guess), if you do not let him out right away, and you change your mind and decide to go back and let him out, he'll start calling you all kinds of marvellous names (if your'e a female) like cow and etc... Heck, I had changed my mind (figured my meta-gaming knowledge wasn't fair to my roleplaying) and when he started that, then I decided to let him rot in prison instead.

I didn't realize you could kill him, and I've never gotten the city elf to talk much. I suppose I should be prying a little harder.

Yep, you can kill him and add another notch to your murder knife.

There is zero reason to let the guy live unless you're an evil bastard. You don't need his vote. at all.

My mage (first play-through, unspoiled) decided to talk to everyone first before making any kind of decisions. Running into Soris and his story, and Vaughn's foul mouth upon returning made her whip out that murder knife lickety-split.

See I wonder how this is going to play out cause in my city elf playthrough I killed the Urls son and well Soris didn't get capture.  My cold hard **** just slaughter every one to get her cusion free.

I let him out the first time because I had no idea who he was. Suffice to say after playing the City Elf origin he's died every subsequent play through.

You'll find a couple of empty cells in the dungeon and have one less vote at the Landsmeet.  But do you think Vaughan would have supported your character anyway?  Paint the floor with that bastard.

Oh, and you can also figure out Vaughan's mettle by asking him what the elven uprising was about. My human noblewoman heard him say something about animals thinking they are people and that was all she needed to hear. It's rather entertaining if you opt to leave him in his cell- he starts punching the air and calling you a fat cow etc. If you have Zevran in your party, he will have an opinion about what you do with Soris and Vaughan.

Yah on my Mage playthrough they where empty too....lol I felt so good slaughting them all with my city elf.  I just finished Ostagar and did the dwarf commor orgin to get it out of the way.  Now to go back and finish my city elf playthrough.

I got the same thing on the 360 version. I had to 'click' him a few times, standing further away from the cell, and eventually it worked.

Don't click on him, click on the cell.

And seriously people, when someone has a problem, don't waste an entire page talking about things that have nothing to do with the problem.
