"Hold Position" is your best friend for this, try to have your healer+ranged around the corner and far away from where the enemy will come from.
If you have a mele dps have them hide JUST around the corner, now take your tank and bob your head out then run behind a wall, usually one or two come looking and as soon as they turn the corner BAM! let them have it, rinse and repeat.
Get used to doing this and the game becomes much easier and more fun, the enviroment, choke points, "pulling" and "line of sighting" are very important tools on the PC version.

How? Most of the time I walk into an area and suddenly a bunch of **** pops up from the floor and I'm surrounded. Or there is a cutscene, and I'm already in a room surrounded and combat starts. Or my guys run in without me if I try to run out and lure enemies to me.
I was just thinking how incredibly useless traps are for me, and how great they are for the enemy because I'm always ****ing stuck in one while the rest of my parts gets ripped up.
Put the party in HOLD mode. Use a bow or any other Archer. Move only that character forward until a target comes into view, plunk it with an arrow and run back to your group. Then instruct each party member what to do once the mob arrives.
I do agree though, combat after a cutscene sucks, it's hard to position your characters so you don't get swarmed.

As for pausing the game all the time then it is something you want to unlearn over time.

No.
Never use activated abilities in the tacticss unless it has a very specific purpose. The AI will just waste them and you will run out of stamina in no time (and then you will falsely be led to believe you need willpower, thereby gimping your character furthermore while still not solving your stamina problems).
Keep them for when it counts, when you HAVE to disable a dangerous opponent because he is beating the crap out of your party members, then you use your stuns and knockdowns.

Make sure also that your willpower is up, it gives you more stamina, and I've read that dex is good for warriors to avoid getting hit (of course strength is good too and con).
Honestly though, if I were you I'd playthrough your first time as a mage. I'm terrible at pausing the game unless I want to go find some other aoe spell to cast, I never switch characters unless it's to make one character take a health pot... and I've been able to stumble all the way to Landsmeet easily enough. Fireball is awesome, especially when your party doesn't take damage from it. I also gave my mage healing abilities early on, so I let Wynne do most healing, but I spot heal and dps.
I've also read it's good to include having characters take health pots/mana pots in their tactics when they're at a certain percentage, which would likely make things a bit easier.
The only tactics I really removed was Wynne using a shield on herself as a priority, and giving her more heal priorities and group healing in her tactics. (still not happy with how I did her tactics)

Ah yeah - I picked a warrior, with all my points in tanking - sword/board all the way. Trouble is, I never have enough stamina to really use my abilities- it seems to all be locked up in upkeep. Why do I even have the abilities if I need to stay in Threaten and have the defensive stance thing up an running and never have the energy to use them?
The game is unbalanced in the fact that mages need only concern themselves with 'willpower' and 'magic' where as warriors need 'strength', 'dexterity', 'constitution' and 'willpower' for stamina.
So try to find the right balance. Don't completely forgo the willpower stat. Try and get armour and abilities that give you added stamina and regen bonuses
I have a tactics set on my tank where he only uses sustained abilities when he needs them.
Enemy using ranged attack <---> activated shield cover
self health <50% <---> activate shield defence

Also, hold Leliana og Wynne back, Have Wynne use her magic and Leli shooting her bow at the enemy from far away. How you'd do that depends on whether or not you're playing on the PC on Xbox 360 or PS3? On the PC, I think you can select say Leliana by drawing a box around her? and the right-clcik to get her moving to where you want to go? You'll need to click on the run icon first, I think?
There's a forum for gameplay where your questions about this might get your better help than here, I think.

This.
That was some really terrible advice, especially if you are already having stamina issues. Micromanage yur special abilitis unless you have them set for something VERY specific.

Why do so many warriors whine about this?
1) Reading stat desciptons will show you that willpower will give you more stamina.
2) There is no need to have stances up at all times.
3) This isn't WoW, you can't just mash buttons on your abilities, you actually have to use them where appropriate and weigh the stamina cost against the benefits.
You're right- I play a main raid tank in WoW. I'm not understanding why I'm given abilities that I'm not supposed to use, because autoattack isn't doing **** for damage. If I'm not supposed to be in a defensive stance while tanking, why am I given it to use?
Willpower? What the hell does Willpower have to do with physical prowess? I thought it was a mage thing. I've put all my points into Strength and Constitution so I could wear armor and weapons I thought would keep me alive and be useful, and have the health to take some damage. I need to invest in Willpower to be able to bash the **** out of someone's face with a shield?

1. If your having difficulty beating a scenario, you can change the game to Easy Mode. I myself however like the challenge and often I'll reload the game to better refine my fighting technique if I loose a battle. But to change it to easy mode if you continually get wiped see below.
- Click on Main Menu, Options, Game Tab : Easy, Normal, Hard, Nightmare.
2. Setting up the game to pause when you are engaged by enemies. This one I use often because it will auto pause as soon as combat begins. You can tell your party members what to do while paused and then just click (spacebar) to pause or unpause.
- Click on Main Menu, Options, Game Tab : Check Mark beside Pause at start of Combat.
3. Tactics are your friend especially if you are not going to control party members and allow the AI to do so. Click the tactics button or hit you \\ (foreward key on your keyboard) to bring up the menu.
As you level or as you purchase skills that give you more tactics. The tactic will increase and give the AI more options which is quite extensive and I recommend playing in the tactics.
Example:
In tactics screen you'll see the character name at the top < Your Character Name > click the left or right arrow to move to other characters. Go to your Wardog for example.
Mine is called Aidan
---
< Aidan > Behavior ( Selectable options on the top right of screen ) I choose Aggressive
Presets ( Selectable ) this is set to Custom 1. Choose Wardog
----
The AI is already preset with certain combat tactics. However I tend to change some of them. Below is the preset for the Wardog at level 1.
+ 1. Enemy Health <=50% Growl
+ 2. Target:Condition
In order to CHANGE/MODIFY.
+ ( This will enable or disable a tactic) We want tactics enable so NO need to click this.
We do however want to change the dog from howl at 50%. So just click Enemy Health< 50% and it will give you a drop down menu. You can choose any you like from this point but say for example Enemy Nearest Visible. On the right it should show Growl, when your companion levels you will have more choices as they learn skills.
Now, remember this one as it is very useful especially if you don't have a healer in party but make sure you have an abundance of healing potions.
+ 2. Self Health 50%< -- chose action Use least poultice, least powerful. (This tells your wardog to drink a potion when his life is below 50%)
Hope the above isn't to confusing but if you need more help just pm me and I'll try to walk you through more indepth.

Works good if you specify to use it when protecting a party member - like the caster.

I believe it is 25 points of Stanima for one point of willpower - so only a few points need be spent. And yes, willpower has everything to do with how long you last in a fight.

iT's almost better to invest in dex to avoid hits, than con and try to soak up hits (according to what I've read). And willpower gives warriors/rogues more stamina, and mages more magic. So willpower is important for a tank.

My archer setup is this:
#1: self: health lower than 25% :::: use health potion: weakest
#2: self: any :::: activate: rapid shot (you can change this to aim, if you want to use special arrows)
#3: enemy: target has high or medium armor rating :::: use: shattering shot
#4: enemy: target is using melee or ranged attack :::: use: crippling shot
#5: enemy: target health > 50% :::: use: critical shot
#6: self: being attacked by melee or ranged attack :::: activate: stealth (only works with rank 3 and above and i think it resets aggro)
#7: enemy: target of controlled party member :::: attack
Now you must not forget to change the behaviour also in the upper right corner, it's "default" by default, set it to ranged.
it's maybe not the best tactics there is, but it worked for me, and i only needed to switch back to her, to
1) get in a good position, since a blocked archer doesn't do you any good.
2) to snipe off enemy spellcasters with arrow of slaying.
maybe this helps you.
Edit:
Revenants, killed easy:
Set everybody to hold. Get your tank to the revenant and use taunt. wait 10 seconds. Now cast a forcefield on your tank (now he is immune to all damage) and as soon as your tank comes out of the forcefield taunt again, put the forcefield back up.
less cheesy: the mage-hexes from the entropy branch work wonders as well. Hex of misdirection makes the revenants cry.

You need to find some lyrium and some vials and to invest in the Herbalism skill. Pronto. Or have Wynne make some Lyrium potions as these restore stamina. One merchants has enough lyrium, another has enough vials.

Ive played many MMOs, except WoW...now l can see why.
Ill make it easy for you;
-Set the Game Difficulty to EASY
-Take/make tanks in your group
-Set their tactics to drink a heal potion at <50%
There, you wont have to think about anything and can just grunt your way thru the game.

Ally <90% = Regenerate
Ally <75% = Heal
Ally <50% = Life Ward
Ally <25% = Group Heal (panic button)
Mana <10% = Use mana pot most powerfull.
All non-Wynne characters have:
Self <25% = Use Health pot most powerfull.
I dont bother with haste, or weapon buffs, rock shield, or even stam rejuvanation, i'd rather have her healing 24/7 with ALL her mana ready per fight, works like a charm for me.
If you have it, have her stand on top of a paralasis glyph and take direct control of her for tough battles, works every time.

What I'd suggest is giving Leliana only one weapon and removing her daggers, then setting her to archer, and ranged. This should make sure she stays back.
Regarding gifts, I won't say too much as not to give spoilers, but each character likes a certain kind of gift. So if you find the one that likes wine, odds are they will also like other alcoholic beverages. Same with other things. There are hints as to what they like in the character bio's and in gameplay if you listen to the conversations. Special gifts that are for quests can only be given to certain characters.
Fights such as revenants and the trader with the mage on the hill ARE hard, and people do struggle with them. As you get higher level and better gear you will gradually beat these.
For the mages try to get them killed fast or keep them CC'd. Leilana can stun, Morrigan can freeze, you or Alistar can shield bash. Traps, poision could help you also.
For a first playthrough i would suggest being a damage dealer and letting alistair tank until you get up to speed with it. If you want to be a tank, get willpower for more stamina.
Just keep playing and it will get easier. Have fun :-)

Um, don't raid tanks do almost no dps? Tanks tank. Not dps. Your three party members do your dps. And you can't just mash any button as a tank in wow, usually you have to use some format and cycle through certain abilities? (wouldn't really know though, I played a healer in raids, not a tank)
iT's almost better to invest in dex to avoid hits, than con and try to soak up hits (according to what I've read). And willpower gives warriors/rogues more stamina, and mages more magic. So willpower is important for a tank.
Raid tanks do damage that does a disproportionate amount of threat (usually baked into a particular stance that doesn't require upkeep using the same resource as your primary abilities). The damage they do is significant, though not near the amount of a true dps'r. That being said, tanks don't need to rely on their dps to be present to win every single enounter.
So what I'm hearing is that I need to invest in strength to wear armor/weapons, invest in constitution to have a health pool, invest in willpower to use my abilites, invest in dexterity to avoid hits, and invest in cunning so I can intimidate.
And I only get 3 points per level? Did any of the developers actually PLAY a warrior? Or were they too busy making new spell effects?
/sigh

You don't need THAT much willpower. Increase a bit, but don't just dump points into it to get more stamina. S&SH does doesn't have that many activated abilities unless you go into specializations. There is shield bash and pummel. And taunt. (Dual wielding relies more on activitated abilities.)
The rest are sustained. Use those as the situation demands. If you are facing archers using something that deflects missile attacks. Use shield wall to prevent knockdowns, etc. Though I usually had that up at the end.
Otherwise concentrate on STR and DEX. Don't neglect dexterity! It increases your defense rating and lets you evade attacks. You don't need massive health (CON) if you don't get hit as much in the first place. Put some points into CON now and then, but don't use it as a dumping stat. Some shield talents have dexterity requirements for a reason. It doesn't hurt to go beyond that. You'll notice a steep rise in survivability and attack evasion. It's not too late to revise the stat distribution on levelup. I didn't notice that until later and Alistair turned out fine.
