ok, so i want to be a fire mage, but all  the fire spells are AoE and do friendly fire...
now...how can i avoid this?

obviously, you will say, move your party members away from the enemies
however, the enemies will just run to my party members, so this is impractical
in the end, i will have to cast spells at both enemies and party members

so, possible ways to negate friendly fire....
force field is one...however it takes 4 skill points and i don't really want to get it
are there any ways to make charachters resistant to, say, fire damage?
if that was possible it would be a great option

are there charachters that are resistant to certain damage?
are there skills that make charachters resitant, or armor?

are there spells i can cast on my team to protect them?

Finally, are there any death penalties for dead teammates?
namely, do i lose anything if i kill a teammate with friendly fire

Don't use fire as your primary repertoire. You can't be a "fire mage" anyway, since it's only 4 spells and you get 5x that much over the course of the game. Start taking up other spells and use those when you can't avoid FF.

When playing with Aoe spells, you need to take your party members in consideration. This was the way in baldurs gate and even now again. If you dont want them to take aoe damage, then dont use aoe.

On lower difficulty levels friendly fire is off/toned down. You may be able to bump up character resistances as well to lower damage taken.

None of this is helpful, next time don't post at all. And I am speaking to all the idiots that replied, not one individual.

Abuse Force Field + AoE. Best way to do it without cheezing it to lower levels.

I use cone/explosive spells when the enemy is initially charging or indoors I'll put the tank in the doorway and position mages on either side of him and use cone spells at angle that hits whatever enemies are cluster in front of him.  For large AOE spells I use earth quake to slow/stop them before they get close, then ice storm to further stop them in their tracks.  If you have more top teir AOE you can create a magical **** storm or just switch the archery and pick them off before the ice storm dissapates.  If enemies are low on health and your guys aren't just take the hit.

Like a rogue, mages need to position.  When the opportunity arises, use an AOE.  When it doesn;t stick to single target or none FF spells.  People use force shield to tank. I use it to stop bosses and higher level mages so that I can pick off their minions in peace.  Recently I've used to to protect a mage who is getting too much attention, but I've never used it to tank.  Just not my style.

Another note.  Ice is probably the most useful spell line.  I never really saw the point in fire and I think Lighting does the most damage. I could be wrong. If you want fire make sure you get grease as well.

Have your warrior taunt the enemies, then move your party back from your tank then throw down some aoe right in front of him was the most effective way I found. Most aoe spells show there range so its just a matter of not clipping your tank. Also good use of the "toggle all" and "hold position" buttons will really help. Its possible to have an aoe mage without force field but it takes a lot of micromanagement.

You can either send AOE spells on a person or on a spot. Choose a spot where the enemies are expected to run to, and keep your party members away from that spot )and the AoE surrounding it, of course.

But sometimes it's necessary to sacrifice a companion for the greater good...
