Playing Legacy and after the part where I kill Rhatigan and get the Key, I try to go forward and head to the 'passage down'. The game crashes. I searched the forums and they said to roll back to DX9, which I did. Same thing. The loading screen for the next area just keeps loading and nothing happens.
I'm using NVIDA GeForce GTS 360M, and I just updated it to version 296.10.

The first thing I would suspect is that you need to run disk clean up, defrag and clean the registry. If those don't fix it, make sure your GPU is not overheating (anything over 100c may be a problem.)

my defrag runs on a schedule and scan shows my hard drive is not fragmented. will try the other two. laptop doesn't feel hot, and techie BF says it's unlikely the GPU is overheating, as the crash is occurring at the same place consistently.
