The best move would be for Bioware to live up to their initial promises
of numerous, varied endings that culminated off the choices players had
made throughout the series. To those of you have enjoy your current
ending, congratulations. You are very lucky, you do not have to feel
the intense pain and anguish others do, many of whom cannot adequately
express their frustrations in words(just read between the enflamed
lines). It's understandable people are happy with their current ending
and the philosophical undertones it provides. However it should not be
should be the only ending, with only minor variations. Wanting
variation does not detract from the "it's art" argument. Keep this
(singular intentional) ending if necessary, but do not have it be the
only one.
KotoR was a prime example of how you could receive
divergent endings based on your choices. Yes it was dark side/light
side, which are not as ambiguous as Paragon/Renegade, but the fact that
your choices are completely irrelevantin ME3 is appalling because it
completely contradicts the premise of all three mass effect games and
your promises to your consumers, not just in your product, but in the
hype you built for the game to sell pre-orders. An apology is not
necessary, no consumer truly deserves it. Give a "happy, save
everything" ending as an option, but also provide a tragic, epic fail
option where all Shepard's hard effort or selfish decisions implode
before his/her eyes leaving him/her feeling crushed or reeling from the
weight of it all. Run the full spectrum of endings you promised
Bioware. Though people say it's art there is a guarantee that no one
would be truly displeased with more content that fleshes out the story.
They might complain you caved, but truthfully they will love you for
it.
Then wrap it up, provide closure, help fans understand what happens to
the galaxy they helped create(you said so yourself Casey). Don't leave
them in the dark with carbon copy endings that do not deviate from a set
path regardless of the veiled perception of choice. Do what you did
with KotoR; provide multiple endings and then when the time comes for an
expansion, sequel...MMO(gag)...pick a particular canon to run future
Mass Effect stories with and everyone will be able to live with/accept
it. To force only one outcome to canonize it regardless of color choice
detracts from your art, it doesn't solidify it. Your art was in
freedom of choice throughout the series and the weight of those
choices.
Bioware it is wise and absolutely necessary for you to
take a stauch stance and defend your current ending as canon. There is
no argument or disagreement with that, if this is the canon ending you
intend for future products, far be it from anyone to question your
creative license. That is your canon, that is your story. However,
provide the same fan service you are so critically acclaimed and
respected for. Give the fans their endings so they can finish their
Shepard's story. This solution provides you the canon you intended,
much like the light side option for KotoR was canon, whereas you also
provided the fan service everyone knows you are capable of, much like
the dark side ending could be chosen in KotoR. Though it was inevitably
not canon you can be certain for many people for their Revan it still
is.
Bioware ignore the petty arguments between
individuals/fans/trolls/reviewers. Those arguments are self contained,
mainly driven by frustration, confusion and certainly ego on all sides
and do not relate to the actual concerns with the ending. It is
understandable this solution will take time, money and effort and your
company should be compensated for such effort, fairly and favorably. It
is imperative the fans understand and accept that otherwise they will
only harm themselves and derail their own hopes and aspirations by
alienating themselves.
Bioware forgive the angst, forgive the
destructive criticism, it seems you understand it because you are
listening. Your fans are hurt and they do not know what to do. They
are clueless as to your intentions, and they are fearful of the unknown
so some have lashed out, and yes that some is the vocal minority. The
Retake movement is not part of the vocal minority, they are a clearly
organized movement that is being lumped with anyone and everyone that
dislikes the endings and vocalizes it negatively. Do not create a lump
sum of naysayers, much like the pro-ending fans do not want to be lumped
into a group labeled as ignorant or "fair weather" fans who have no
investment in the mass effect series. It is apparent many of them have
as much investment as people involved in the Retake movement, they are
the fortunate ones who, depending on your interpretation, either
"understood" or "liked" the ending.
In conclusion Bioware
understand that individuals on both sides, both fans and reviewers are
attempting to polarize the argument by appealing to your company's ego
and your egos as individuals. Do not allow this to happen. It is not
about ego, it is about maintaining a strong and healthy relationship
with your fan base, many of whom are asking for more. As for those who
are arguing more is less, perhaps they can provide a more compelling
argument for their cause. You can be guaranteed, no one will be
honestly displeased with more Mass Effect.
Sincerely,
Justin Elenbaas.
Dear Bioware...constructive feedback; give us everything.
