After my 3rd playthrough or so, I am beginning to wonder if it is possible to achieve the "best" ending by playing only single player. I know from checking the strategy guide and various internet sources that the best ending requires 5,000 Effective strength, or 10,000 Galactic strength with the default 50% Galaxy Readiness. On my playthrough which I gained the highest Galactic strength, I had about 7,000. 50% of that is 3,500. I completed most, if not all of the missions.

So, has anybody collected 10,000 Galactic strength?

I did everything possible and got to 7144.

There's a bit I missed out on in ME 1 (saved the council instead of the Alliance fleet) and ME 2 (destroyed the Collector base). I don't know what difference that would make.

It's not possible.

Like what many others have said, it maxes out around 7200 depending on some choices you've made.

There's some ways to get a little more like having lots of mineral resources on your ME2 save file.

We're being forced to play multiplayer. I do like it but I want to play it when I want to, not because I need to.

Why do I have the strange feeling that the DLC will be giving a lot of galactic strength?

Why do I get the feeling the number is arbitrary anyways, unless they totally remake the endings.

I also did a full completionist run that had all ME1/ME2 data +DLC and still could only get it up to approx 7100

It just isn't possible.

Doesn't matter much anyway for me.  I play to Earth and stop.   I can't handle going through the ending again.  So EMS doesnt matter much anymore.

That's what I thought. That means that BioWare repeatedly lied to us, and is actively lying to us because of that one post in the General Discussion area. It is really quite sad that the folks that don't play online for any variety of reasons can't have the full single player experience. Or, at least they can't save Shepard.

As soon as they said it would "help" your single player campaign to play multiplayer, I had a suspicion that it really meant you would NEEDED to play multiplayer >_< Which is just messed up. I don't have a Gold membership to Xbox Live, so I can't get the "best" ending of my single-player game??? I imagine the person that came up with that one is the same one that decided that ME3 needed a "no decisions" mode.

I've followed the game (second play through) by the book (official guide). I can confirm that by finishing all side missions, hub missions, and N7 missions, there is no way to get to 10,000 GS. My highest score was 7,600 (or close to that).

I am now using the iPhone app. Really helps. I am not planning on playing MP and a bit disappointed that actions outside of the actual game are required to get the desired ending.

P.S. Keep in mind, my decisions might of brought a better result if I freed the rachni queen and sacrificed Grunt. But who would do that?

Grunt lived in my game when I saved the queen. But I agree that there's no way to get the Shepard Lives ending in single player alone.

Grunt is never sacrificed. (I think. I saved the queen and grunt survived)

I finished game 2 times, done all side quest and it's possible to get 5000 EMS only by Gibbed.
I'm very dissapointment becouse of that. ME was single player game and Im not interesting in MP. I should be able to get perfect ending without MP, instead I have to edit saves

If Grunt wasn't loyal in ME2, he doesn't survive

Well I got an achievement for bringing "most" of gainable assets to the finale battle and I did every mission. I only got a sum a little over 7,000. Ending, still the same, I'm actually enjoying playing through again and again, mainly noticing little details, but besides that I have yet to get this 10,000 EMS but I suspect it'll come with DLC or something.

Since I don't have access to MP. Single player proved absolutely frustrating!!! The game guide so lies! Stupid me. Naive believer in the written word. Uber paragon throughout all 3 games , all the right choices, every mission, side quest War Asset I could possibly collect etc and still Shepard dies on my second playthro!! highest EMS about 7100. So disappointing. I give up on Mass Effect. ( and I really loved this franchise .....until the ending)

Link to the topic in the Spoilers group where we did the math.

The maximum available Total Military Strength is around 7,520, give or take a few points. Chop that in half, and you end up with about 3,760 Effective Military Strength.

It's enough to unlock the "Master and Commander" achievement and all three endings, but not enough for the "best" ending.
