Blame the voice actor and the writers. Seriously. He's beautifully written and even better delivered by Steve Valentine.

I have a man who is better than Alistair in every direction other than actually having templar skills. I still think Alistair is a blast. And he's just funny.

Once you really get to KNOW the character, the whole illusion fades, but it's a damned good illusion, all told.

LOL!  Just as many guys seem to go gaga over certain characters.  Aren't there tons of Morrigan threads?  Last I checked, she wasn't real either.

Or is it more "valid" when men do it?

The same reason why so many men are crazy over Rei, or Aeris, or Tifa, or Drizzt, or the thousand of other fictional characters they attach themselves to.

Polygons.  He's a fully rendered 3D model, not a freakin' .jpg, dude.

Okay, this question makes me smile.

Ladies liking Alistair so much stems from three points:

1. Really excellent writing of his dialogue, character, etc.
2. Really excellent voice acting.
3. Women like romance. Most of us are far more likely to read a book, watch a TV series, or even play a video game if there's a romantic subplot (it isn't required to be the MAIN plot, mind, but we do like it to be there, in the story).

Online fandom is made up of an enormous number of women who watch their favorite shows and write fic/make vids, etc of their favorite couple/pairing/ship, because we love watching that relationship unfold as it develops. It should then come as no surprise that we also love to rpg that out in a video game, or that we find a particular character deeply fascinating when he's been made in part with that purpose in mind.

My husband loves a good game with a militaristic edge. He loves realistic settings, dialogue, and a good story to go along with it (such as Gears of War, and Gears of War 2 - he played those games through at least four times each). Women love a good story with that element of romance, that's all. :) And Alistair is a very well done character.

Alistair is cool. Good sense of humor. Decent enough fellow. Great voice actor.

His romance is a joke, though. He's way too awkward for what he is.

I started out already really liking Maric from the Stolen Throne and the Calling, so I was primed to LOVE Alistair. He's goofy, sweet, and charming, and even his banters with other party members like Morrigan and Wynne are adorable. I found his character growth throughout the game believable, and had no problem believing he would make a good ruler in the end. I didn't do the sacrifice ending with him personally, but I watched on YouTube and found it extremely touching, probably the best scene in the game. And the funny thing is, I don't even find Alistair to be the most interesting in the game (that would be Morrigan). He's just the one I'd be most likely to fawn over. Steve Valentine's awesome voice acting doesn't hurt at all, too.

But, you know, lots of people like characters from games, TV, and movies a whole lot, and come together on the internet to gush. That's not really new or disturbing.

Alistar gets a lot of knocks for not being tough enough because people think he's supposed to be a Duncan in training.  You have to look at the character.  This is  a kid who grew up without a father, repeatedly told he should never expect to claim his birthright, generally ignored or disliked and eventually kicked out to join the Chantry.  In the end some guy comes and pulls him out of that only to die six months later.  No wonder the guy has minimal sense of self worth.

He's certainly brave/tough enough, (depending how much you use him) he battles werewolves, fights hundreds of dark spawn, decends into the deep roads, cleans the mage tower and does battle with the Archdemon.  It's not a lack of toughness he has but a lack of self worth.

Excellent writing, excellent voice acting, and for a lot of people the character is a likable one.

I'll admit it, I'm Team Alistair.

That's not what I'm talking about.  I'm talking about the fact that he's a handsome man with a very sexy accent.  In the 6 months that he's been a Grey Warden outside of the Chantry alone he should have gotten his practice at beating women off with sticks.

But no, he's still some awkward finger shuffling nerd.

No then they say they are just pimply virgins playing games in their parent's basement who have never seen a woman naked.

It just throws them for a loop when women do it.

Ugh. I couldn't stand her. Sephiroth was the hero that day and I HATED Final Fantasy 7.

I don't know if it's disturbing, like some other posters said, men do the same thing. Take a gander at some of the Bayonetta boards.

Well he did say that there were no female Wardens around when he was going through his training during those six months...

How so, exactly?  He basically grew up in a convent (and went straight from there to the grey wardens, who don't seem like they'd tolerate more than the most innocent forms of manly-man horsing around).  It's not like he's one of today's young men, after all (who from most indications seem to learn how to treat women from rappers and porn stars on the internet).

I don't understand why it's seen as weird for a person of any gender to be infatuated with (or at least fascinated by) fictional characters--that's one of the results of good storytelling, after all.  It's human.

It's just that this particular thread, with it's title, struck me as a bit sexist.

Err, I'm pretty sure there's a good deal of middle ground there that you're leaving out.
