I'm not speaking in support of sex.  I'm speaking against the idea that they're grossed out at the idea of touching you.  Male/Female platonic relationships are totally possible, but that doesn't mean they don't consider you attractive.

Just, y'know, don't hang around them in lingerie.

Well, that's true, and I'm sensitive to that and don't enjoy stringing someone along.  Ever.  It's a bad vibe.

However, when I get into the brother/sister zone where what you said just gets us madly laughing with "Eeeeeew!" tacked on and you hailed with a shower of popcorn, I'm comfortable with it.  Said males have perfectly healthy relationships of their own, but perhaps their woman doesn't share a love of zombie movies or say, roleplay games and doesn't really get all of his jokes.  Or won't go on for hours and hours about how awesome Johnathan Coulter is and be willing to sing "All we wanna do is eat your brains!" at a moment's notice.

but I did not mean to come across sounding dominance...I more was meaning it in the situation as it relates to how I viewed Allister were one to put it into a more real world sort of setting, more meant as a compare, and contrast of personality traits really.  Or atleast thats what the intent was.

I can see the purpose by which Alistair was designed to appeal to a certain crowd, but he's certainly the most unrealistic romance in the game - which of course, makes him perfect for fiction.

But he's not unrealistic.  At least in my experience.  But then I've been an incredibly lucky woman in my lifetime.

There's no way Leliana could pull it off.  I don't even think she has a bardic past.  At one point, Morrigan said something like "So,Leliana, I suppose you're planning on writing a grand ballad" based on one of the quests we'd just been through.  Leliana's response: "Why would I do that?"
Maybe I'll change my opinion of Leliana next play through, when I actually pay attention to her more, but, so far, she seems really naive and a little dumb.

Well, sort of a problem with the Leliana character.  She gives us the frivelous shoe shopper, reformed, spare everyone, and all that.  And we believe it.

But yet she was a bard, supposedly successful, has definitely assassinated people, and her former boss states that the reason she is so good at manipulating is that she loves doing it.  She even throws out a bit about how she somewhat enjoys killing people, wonders if that might make her bad, essentially begging us to comfort and protect her, she the one who is constantly telling us to let people go, to not kill them.  Conviently right after her former boss throws some accussations as to her true nature our way.

In short, the only piece that's missing from the Femme Fatale picture here is her using us for some cause.  Add that to the mix and you could see how easily she's manipulating us.  Doesn't exist though, but that is all it would take.

I don't doubt that Lel could manipulate people without much trouble. I do doubt that this is a tactic she would employ, beyond the initial "I'm joining your quest to save the world!" encounter. Because she seemed pretty firm on that. She didn't come to Lothering and stay there for, what, months? years? Waiting to spy on some Grey Wardens who weren't inducted yet during a Blight that hadn't happened yet. She's a person who lived a life of lies and plots, and got fed up with it. Was hurt deeply when she was betrayed by the only one she trusted. Even in the Chantry, by her story, she wasn't exactly well-received.

Despite being a professional liar once, she joins the party at the point where she's looking for some good and real and true. A relationship without lies and deceptions. The one blossom on the dead rose bush, as it were. Follow the romance plot, and it's you ^_^

She didn't leave because she was fed up with it, she left because she was an escaped prisoner.  She more than likely did not tell the Chantry in Lothering that she was an ex bardic spy on the run from Orlais.  On top of this it is implied through out the game that she lied about her vision.  Reason for this was that, in the Chantry, she was just another person and not special like she had been.  Hence, the vision to make her feel special again.

hehe, I snagged my mate in a bar >.>  to be fair she was part of a local Celt/punk/metal band I went to see, the Father of my boy's on the other hand was a childhood friend.. but many of my closest friends I admit I met through RPG's ( the old school style back before we had the net ) and other games.

I admit though, in the long run I have met far more...well rounded, and intelegent individuals once you dive into the " sub-cultures. so it's win win.

Probably for the best. Don't think the boyfriend would approve anyway.
Come to think about it, maybe we can make a steam group. I'm having a hell of a time finding L4D2 players... maybe I'll jump over to off-topic...

I think it says a lot about the writing of the game that men are bromancing Alistair and women are getting all "Girl Powah!" with Leliana.

She may not have left because she was tired of being a Bard, but she stayed in the Chantry because she liked it there. She liked the silence. That's what happens when you / your life changes dramatically, you strike off on your own and sort things out. Acclimate. Or, conversely, you whine and whine and whine until everyone leaves, and THEN you acclimate. Anyway, she didn't leave the Chantry because she was tired of it. Or maybe she was becoming tired of it, and wanted a reason to leave, (hence the dream) but it was still an unsettling change. And she does miss it, a little. It's a question of faith.

I think it's great that there is a male character that can be romanced by a female player. Games almost always cater to male desires (just look at promos and advertisements for this game).

With her, I took it as little more than a " starting over" point in her life. That becomes more clear when you deal with her side quest, and she seems quite distraught at the thought that she was going to be pulled back into it, and become something she did'nt really want to be. I can see why she took refuge in the chantry...It's really no different that people today, they turn to the Church/Sangha or some form of " group" when they want to get away and start anew. As for her dream, I " personally" associate that with dream's of the subconscious, being mashed together with the environment. When talking of her " vision" I myself, and through the PC tried to shape it, and take it more or less as just a symbolic dream, leaving the Maker talk out of it, as I see that as just....I want to say a way to try and rationalize it?

The "bromance" certainly tops the romance in my opinion. But he still never reached the height of broness of Gorim or Leske. But alas, he'll have to do.

I dunno if he's the most unrealistic.  There's Morrigan, who's just joining the adventure to get a baby.

Most women like her prefer to go to college for that sort of thing.

Think of the type of woman Morrigan is - someone else put it best: mean, socially inept, and eager to get in your bed as long as you agree with whatever she says and ply her with plenty of gifts. She's ready and willing for any casual fling that comes along, provided the man is assertive enough and meets her colossally high standards, but as soon as real emotions come along she retreats back to the scared, emotionally stunted girl-child she is. Women like that are a dime a dozen.

Zevran is another popular stereotype that you can find in any bar - confident, self-assured, quite skilled where it counts, but deep down his shadow self resides within a pool of regret that's just waiting for someone who truly loves him to come along and drag him out.

Leliana is the most normal, and therefore most boring, of them all. Takes the most work to get her to the love stage, and she enjoys making you work for it, but once you get there it's a sweet happily ever after. Oh sure the two of you might have problems down the road but she's ready to be mature about them and work through them together. She has flaws, like everyone else, but she's trusted you with them and you've accepted them, same way she's accepted yours. In other words, an actual adult relationship. Bo-ring.

Which leaves Alistair, the only type you don't see on regular planet Earth. He's handsome, charming, witty, he has no experience with women and yet somehow knows exactly how to flatter them. He's vulnerable and warm and ready to take you into his loving embrace but of course he's also tough and manly. He responds well to being manipulated and bossed around but of course when things get real he's ready to be the big man and take charge (particularly the hilarious character derailment at the Landsmeet). Only one adjective can describe Alistair: imaginary.

Oh sure there might be men who are somewhat like Alistair in the world, and I'm certain more than a few women have deluded themselves into thinking they've found someone like him, and I'm even more certain that many men out there have realized the quick path to success is by pretending to be someone like Alistair, but the truth is people like Alistair exist only in fiction. Someone with as many issues as him would not even be close to as loving and understanding as he is, someone with his upbringing would definitely not be as open and compassionate, someone with his looks would not be that inexperienced with women, and perhaps most damning of all someone with the specific combination of his childhood and personality would probably be gay (he just screams gay all over to me). The list goes on. I found Xander and Malcolm Reynolds much more realistic than Alistair, but that's probably just nostalgia speaking.

Not that any of this is bad. I happen to think Alistair is a remarkably well-written character, and his romance is perhaps the most fulfilling provided you do all of the plot and dialogue gymnastics necessary to secure a happy ending with him (which ironically you would have no idea how to do your first playthrough). I'm just saying he's nowhere near realistic - which is good, because this is a video game and shouldn't be trying to be realistic.

EDIT: Whoa, post came out formatted all weird.

What most guys seem to think women want, is pretty much right.
Alistar is a fantasy.  He's the nice, funny, good looking guy, that hangs on your every whim. He is what women instist they want, and fantasize about.
Unfortuately, in the real world.  Alistar would die alone.  As they would never give him a chance if they weren't forced to hang out with him on some epic journey.   He would be alone in the corner, while they are off dancing with the guy that bought them drinks.

What women want, what they fantasize about, is not what they actaully persue far more often then not.
