It is entirely possible to reach any age with any looks and not be experienced with the opposite sex. Assuming that you are raised in a same sex environment, like Alistair predominantly was. His best chance to get laid was before he was sent to the Chantry. Can't imagine that. And then he was in the Wardens, which are mostly male. Which is understandable, given what the Darkspawn do when they capture live females. (sub-comment: Sten makes me curious what female qunari look like).

I do, however, wonder about Alistair being not even slightly bicurious under the above conditions. He's pretty popular with even the straight guys, you'd think someone lonely would approach him eventually.

the truth is
people like Alistair exist only in fiction. Someone with as many issues
as him would not even be close to as loving and understanding as he is,
someone with his upbringing would definitely not be as open and
compassionate, someone with his looks would not be that inexperienced
with women, and perhaps most damning of all someone with the specific
combination of his childhood and personality would probably be gay (he
just screams gay all over to me).

You nailed him!
ROFL

Yes, first thing I thought when he opened up to my PC was 'you are either gay or you are pulling my hair with the virgin part'

Forbidden fruit is sweeter, no?

After reading way to much history involving nuns being practically hookers for the male clergy (not porn, just pointing that out), I never see them as innocent in the same sense again.

Alistar is a fantasy.  He's the nice, funny, good looking guy, that hangs on your every whim. He is what women instist they want, and fantasize about.
Unfortuately, in the real world.  Alistar would die alone.  As they would never give him a chance if they weren't forced to hang out with him on some epic journey.   He would be alone in the corner, while they are off dancing with the guy that bought them drinks.

What women want, what they fantasize about, is not what they actaully persue far more often then not.

Whoah, whoah, whoah.

I can't speak for all women, but my interest in men in general is for their company.  Alistair is excellent company.  In bed or out, not really the issue.  Funny, charming, dedicated and driven.  Yes, personal flaws and all.  Interesting.

I can buy my own drinks and being impressed bores me.  Being entertained, now that's priceless.

There's always a chick like me, talking to a guy like Alistair, in the corner, busy laughing.  So ignore him if you want to, there's at least a real-world analog to hang out with him.

I've always been disturbed by what most guys seem to think women want in a man, so... this thread shows that all is right with the world, in my mind. That said, I found Alistair far more interesting playing a male character and doing the whole best friend/bromance thing than as a female character/romancing him.

S'true. Women that actually want the "fantasy" really shouldn't even bother looking for him at a bar / nightclub. If he's there, he was dragged there by his frat-boy co-workers / brother / ex-gf's friends and looking for the first chance to pull a ninja vanish. Try Barnes & Nobles? Best Buy? Local pizzeria?

Or the guys buying extraordinary amounts of sword grease. You either end up with Oghren or Alastair, win-win.

Hey, "fantasy" doesn't have to last once you're sober.

All I'm saying.

Medieval history is quite saucy. The local monastery ran brothels and some nunneries were 'girl stables' for the clergy, it was a wacky time. Before the Renaissance, women and men were expected to be sexually active. The concept of chastity we have is more attributed to the Victorian ideas about the Middles Ages. Few nobles read, and yet (expensibly produced) erotic books were available to women during that time. And the paitings! Even religous paintings (saints, Madonna and child, pastorals) were highly erotic, displaying the human body without bashfulness.

Excellent writing, excellent voice acting, and for a lot of people the character is a likable one.

I'll admit it, I'm Team Alistair.

Pfft, I'm a guy with a wife and two sons and I am Team Alistair. Total man crush. My wife loves the character too. My first rogue was basically a determined attempt to get him laid. He seemed to deserve it in his fictionally awesome kind of way.

He is our favorite character. I've thought about getting the plot point that pisses him off enough to rage quit but I can never do it. Morrigan aggravated me despite liking her a lot in the end.

I found his vulnerability to make him feel real. He had it the whole time and perhaps being a bastard myself helped me understand the character better.

Like so many other people have said...what's wrong or disturbing about women actually liking Alistair? :P It's no less disturbing than a man who has a crush on Morrigan, or Leliana, or any other female character in a video game.

It's also not hard to see why women would like Alistair! I agree about finally having a decent romance for female gamers =] Zevran was cute, and I did end up romancing him to the end on my first (and so far, only) playthrough. But only because I knew how the romance would play out, and that he and my little elf archer would have a happy ending.

Funny thing is, in RL, I'd go for a guy like Alistair over a guy like Zevran anyday.

I completely agree with you about buying your own drinks and being bored by men who try to impress, but really you must be lucky to find a 1. good looking guy who would be interested in you who is also 2. humorous and intelligent and 3. available and finally 4. straight. In a bar.  In my experience of bars I meet too much of the former, and the latter are usually, well, not exactly easy on the eyes.

Ditto, for the most part... When it comes to Men, or Women, those who may find their way into my chambers are quite different than Allister in a " and I mean" few ways but in general his light hearted humor and such is something, in real companions I adore. In fact, one of my closest friends is almost  exactly like alister " Personality wise atleast, not so much the looks, but not a basement troll by any means"  yes He's Perma- friend zoned, but I love his company none the less. Just as I know when it comes to Allister, I would most likely be having fun Joking and teasing him, dragging him off to play games, or pulling others into our little convo, and intergrating him into our own little cluster, be it all jokes and fun, or philosophical debates or what have you...

The thing is, women really are as diverse in who, or what they like and want, men are too, Take into account a few factors here and there from biological instinct, to social structures may create a " average blueprint" so to speak, but we are quite diverse... I bet Reci here is an amazing woman, and I dare say, that should I know her better there may be many many many things we DO have in common....but by no means does this mean we see eye to eye on who, or what makes a good friend, or what makes an ideal mate... she may not see in my mate what I do, and I may not see it in her's...so you can't really say we want the same things.

Ummm, are you me?  Because, you sound an awful lot like me.  Female gamer with a happy marriage and tons of male friends.

At any rate ...

I set myself up from the start to not like Alistair.  Let's face it, before I got into his character, he sort of screamed stereotypical paladin type.

Then I get into the game and started interacting and getting his dialogue.  He's not at all what I was expecting, and I give Bioware kudos for that.  I can't help but like the guy.  He has great timing and just enough sensitivity to melt a gal's heart without seeming overly broody and emo.  Besides, his "I'm interested lines" are just perfect with the voice acting that delivers them.

I seen so many forum where the ladies are going crazy over him now my sister like if only he was a real man It's disturbing as he's made of pixels.
What is it you ladies like about him so much?

I am not crazy over the character.
I just do hate how things end at the end of the game, so is the same for Morrigan's fans but I do respect them.
That's not because it's a virtual character that you can't like his or her personality just like heroes in TV series.

Well, I have been incredibly lucky.  But I learned long ago to not be prejudiced by looks.  Many of the most handsome or beautiful people are incredibly happy to have someone just....talk to them like they're not a commodity.

I'm not saying you're going to hit gold every time you dig, but I've been immensely surprised at how many stunningly gorgeous people, inside and out, are immune to their own charms or suspicious of anybody responding to them, and are soooo very happy to have someone to talk to that isn't trying to inch them into bed by a script and a stopwatch.

Like all people, treat a person with a gift like, a person.  And then appreciate their gifts.  But above all, appreciate the person.

Personally, I find people respond best when I use them as tools for my own amusement. And by "best," I mean "I'm so very sad and lonely."

Lulz, what was funny is the nerd/dork in my was playing the personality based off our girlfriend in CT so there was no way that she would give him to Anora. I found the ending to be happier because of it, in that selfish kinda  way.

Thank you kindly ma'am, those are some mighty nice words.

Archetypal "grandpa" advice:  “We can't all like the same thing or everybody would be after your grandmother.”

I met my husband online and we were roleplayers.  Had every roleplay under the sun from erotic to horror to silly and we never asked about reality for at least nine months or so of messing around with each other and just having a blast.  We'd joke that he was a 14 year old Japanese girl and I was a 400 pound trucker named "Bubba"

We were both convinced that the other person must be absolutely unappealing in reality because of the surplus of personality and wit.  Must be compensating for something.  We were both wrong and happily so.

Looks are just kind of a bonus. Like money. Not necessary, but hey, it doesn't hurt to love someone hot and or well off ( this might just be the southern Californian in me talking).
