It's disturbing how many ladies actually fancy Alister

A lot of new 'features' don't even make it from one game to the next. Like everything incredibly successful, they're almost afraid to mess with a successful formula too much to try something innovative. (Though tbh EA Sports' Hockey game is way better, especially for multiplayer...)
But veering back at least a little closer to the original topic: it is sad that there are stereotypes of women in gaming. It's also sad that these stereotypes are largely fostered by men in gaming, and ironic because they often mirror wider society's stereotypes of gamers in general.

The unwelcome attention/drama/distraction from actual game content is part of why women are less likely to be upfront about their gender online. If they don't make a point of mentioning it chances are they want to just *play the game* instead of seeking attention. The ones who are very insistent about "proving" themselves female are either looking for in-game attention/advantages or... guys looking for in-game attention/advantages. It just feeds the idea that there are no women gamers, and the stereotype that the female gamers who exist are attention-seeking and incompetent.
My husband plays lots of female characters on the basis of "Well, if I'm going to stare at an ass all day long, at least I can make it a nice ass that I don't mind staring at."
It's as good a reason as any.

Well, there's not much link between the online avatar's gender and the person playing it.
I am, after all, not a dwarf IRL. (Though I do walk around in dragonbone plate armor.)

I was just surprised to see how many women actually played this game.
And yes, that's pretty sexist. Although I think it's safe to say that the majority of gamers are men, and that's the target audience for most games. Elements of the game industry are realizing that there's a vast, untapped market out-there, and with the growing success of 'casual' games things might change.
And for some reason this reminds of WoW raids, where the one or two girls in a 40-person raid would have all the guys hanging on their word in vent because its ZOMGAGURL.
I think some of the dudes from my pvp group couldn't reconcile the fact that the grand marshall in the group, the person who had been leading us for weeks, was a girl. And yes i played too much wow.
I will not melt the minute some random female voice pops up in Vent. That being said, I certainly WILL melt if the RIGHT female voice happens to pop up. And then I will slap myself in the face once or twice, shake it off, and get back to the raiding. Maybe make a little small talk, but not much. I operate under the assumption that she is in one of three situations.
1: She's not really a girl.
2: Assuming point 1 is proven false, she is probably not attractive.
3: Assuming 1 and 2 are proven false, she is either underage, married, or *essentially* married. Because a hot gamer chick has no shortage of guys throwing themselves at her. Surely at least one of them has to be a decent human being.
And this attitude is from a guy who actually DID meet a woman on a game, and DID actually date her for about six months. The best six months of my life. But she didn't technically violate any of the Big 3; she did have a boyfriend when we first met.

Right, but I doubt he tries to convince anyone he's a girl in real life? That's why my observation that only the people who make a big point of it are the ones who cause drama etc., everyone else is just happy playing the game.

I've also felt this was a little weird as well since a lot of the time I don't really notice my character.

No, he has always been an excellent, in-character roleplayer. Nobody has need to doubt he's a woman until his deep voice shows up on Vent.
"Whooooah. You're a dude?"
"Sounds that way, doesn't it?"

Well, he and I have played through online RPG's for years. Depending on the follow camera angle, that's a lot of ass. If you've avoided it entirely then you either don't partake of the RPG genre as much as we have, or simply use first person view.

There's a reason I tend to shy away from the RP servers on WoW. Possibly it's because I like to name my characters wiseass names. And picked up a couple new fun ones surfing around tvtropes.org
Must go rename toon "Determinator"

Which is why fictional characters work so well to enrapture hearts, because they know they can swoon over this character because they know they got nothing to lose, so why not?

Or try and focus on the big monsters trying to kill you instead of the ass of your character? Personally, I constantly roll male toons because there are a lot of desperate men on the internet. If I roll a female toon, I try to shatter any illusions as quickly as possible; with the name of the toon, if possible. Like "Dudemeister"

Well, for me it's not attachment particularly. Not in the sense that I identify with my character in any one-for-one sense.
But it is immersion and I really enjoy that as my hobby. Keeping up all disbelief and not getting involved at all defeats the purpose of interactive storytelling, in my opinion.
LIke going to a movie and saying "This is all fake, those are all actors! Why are you people crying? That's fake blood!"
Yes, but a GOOD story attaches itself to the listener in such a way as to evoke a response. This game is just very good at evoking responses unique to my game playing experience unless it's been a roleplay with real online characters and an improv script.
It's the symbols that are compelling. And there are lots of moments that I am so impressed by the scripting, voice acting and writing. It's "just a game" but it's got a lot of hard work and passion behind it. I'm enjoying exploring that and appreciating it.

It also depends on character models.
I could not stand the human male model in WoW. (As much as I loved the "brotherhood of the bracelet" /silly.) I want to like the look of a character if I'm going to invest time in them. I actually restarted my human noble because I made a model I liked better.
