It's disturbing how many ladies actually fancy Alister

Actually I specialize in Psychology with a particular focus on abnormal. Math is just a hobby.
So, what's your favorite etymology?[/quote]
That's actually pretty difficult to answer. It's taken me about five minutes to come up with a response and all I can say is that my strongest interest lies in semiotics. Second to that, though, would be foreign language study in general, focusing more on grammatical categories (and history of) and lexical similarity.
Oddly enough, I am surrounded by roommates who specialize in psychology.

Well, I wouldn't say ALL makeup is a waste... 30 minutes does seem quite excessive though. 5 minutes, max. But then, I am a man, and know little of such things. I think it's a fair tradeoff, though; 5 minutes of shaving vs 5 minutes of makeup. For time wasted by typical girls, though, I have to point out the Wardrobe Selection Process. Which I am certainly not qualified to judge, as my selection is boxers, jeans, shirt, go. Although sometimes the process is not flawless, and I end up with two t-shirts and no boxers... >.>
I have yet to meet a woman who takes less than half an hour in the bathroom to prepare herself for the day. Not only do they normally have make up, but they also have hair. Wardrobe selection is also pretty annoying. Me, I grab my slacks and a shirt of some kind and I'm good.
Hair. Right. I forget about that. I'm a head-shaver, and before that it was razor stubble. So... I have no grasp of the troubles of long hair, whether it's maintenance or just having it blow in your face, catch on a tree, so on and so forth.

Psychology majors are excellent over-analyzers. You can say "hey, don't be a dick, I'm just tired so leave me alone" and they'll go on about your narcissistic family structure and how you're trying to project your animus onto all of your boyfriends and that's why you fail with relationships, so on. It's great fun.
Language nerds of any kind automatically receive a +10 approval rating on my approval rating bar. Creative writing degree...do you teach ESL now?

I teach nothing as of yet, in fact I've been trying to figure out what I could possibly do with such a degree. I mean, I'd LIKE to run a workshop class like I took in college but I'm not exactly sure how I'd go about locating and applying for such a job. And of course I'd be saddled with Wrt 101 pretty much wherever I apply, it's the bane of writing teachers.
The last couple months consisted mainly of sending my novel out to agents and publishers to try and get a bite... no luck yet.
I find that writing has made me quite the analyzer, too. Nothing so specific. On the other hand, everyone I've actually tried to sit down and talk to has generally ended up telling me deep dark secrets and then saying they can't believe they told me. Often childhood traumas. So I guess I'm easy to talk to?

Maybe it's wrong and false for YOU, but you cannot speak for the rest of the female population. If by some chance you're right, girls would stop going after bad boys, and nice guys wouldn't finish last. But that's not the case. You go for a bad boy who's into risky behavior, then you act all surprised when he treats you badly.

I find that most people who are more inclined to solitary activities, such as writing or studying, often end up meeting people who like to spill their dark secrets out to them. I'm under the impression that a lot of people had big issues with their parents and getting their emotional needs met when they were children, so that when they meet someone who is, say, rational, calm and emotionally in control, they automatically assign the therapist role.
With writing degrees most people get stuck with either teaching or translating. ESL actually isn't that bad, though rather draining---I tutored several students a few years ago and found it to be a very enjoyable experience. There's a challenge in having to speak broken English with another person in order for them to understand you.
The best place to look for teaching jobs is a college or a high school, usually a community college. If you can't teach writing, you can surely tutor, and if you put enough hours in the pay can be relatively good (I think that depends on what state you live in). The most important thing is that you have a degree: people really love degrees.

So you're saying I could be a good therapist... heh. I guess therapists are people too. Being me, I'd rather know what makes me tick than what drives someone else.
Broken english grates on my ears, so unless the pay is good I'd be bad at it. I'm worse at understanding other languages; took basic french classes in high school, and a couple at college level, and I barely know a few food items, shops, numbers... and the verbs. Oh god, the verbs! Conjugation can kiss my ass! >_<
High School... yeah, rather not go back there if I can. The reason I liked the workshops I was in was because everyone there was serious about it. That's the only way you really get something useful out of a class like that. But I would at least have difficulty starting out with a program where I spend the whole class up front lecturing, it's a poor fit for my personality. Tutoring might not be so bad though...

Or, y'know, different girls find different things attractive.
There was even a thread a while back from someone who found Alister an unappealing romance option, and wished there was a more macho, macho man in the game. (I can't find the thread itself, but there's this ).

Again, sweeping generalizations FTL. This thread is crammed with women saying this just ain't so, yet so many persist with the argument that it is. I'm sorry, it just smacks of sour grapes, this argument.

Heh. Not to be mean, but ohh, the irony. Re-read your first post there. And my initial comment wasn't sour grapes, I've never personally been put out by this conception, it's just generalizations that bug me. Do some "nice guys finish last"? Sure. Is it a Universal Truth ? Of course not. But seems like some have adopted it as a mantra or something.

If there are nice guys who finish last, how can you tell the person you're responding that his statement is filled with false? There is some truth in what he said.
Therefore you are wrong. But ironically, it was you goes around telling people they are wrong.

I will say this:
That in my experience as a woman, when I was younger and dumber I DID often go for the jerk. I think that's pretty typical when you're young - for both men and women (the nice guys want the hot ****y girl who doesn't pay attention to them and the girls want that brooding guy that they're SURE they can fix). Once you get a little older though you start to realize these people can never make you happy.
Nice guys do finish last sometimes. But they FINISH, whereas the jerks don't. For me I didn't even realize what I was missing until I met my husband...who, actually now that I think about it is a lot like Alistair in a lot of ways. And I would argue that while Alistair is a fantasy, because he is in fact, NOT REAL, he is far from perfect.
It depends on your tastes. Some women would find Alistair too sweet for their liking or be annoyed by his sense of humor. Others find him dashing and charming and sexy as hell. I tend to fall into the latter.
In short. You're wrong. Alistair would not die alone. In fact it's the guys like Alistair that end up happily married and growing old with people. It's the jerks that end of S.O.L.

Clap, clap, clap. What you say is very, very true. And women, just like men, grow and change in what they want out of a mate as they get older. The guys I loved when I was a teenager were not even a consideration by the time I hit college.
And srsly, the guys who spout that nonsense about women only wanting bad boys are usually confusing their own passive aggressive, creepy behavior for "nice." You can be a nice guy AND confident, assertive, and charming.
