It's truly as if Bioware went through billions of dollars in scientific, psychological and sociological research to discover everything that women want in a man and threw all those ingredients in a blender.  Out popped Alistair.  And he rules in every way.

Except the ending. That contradicts most sociological/psychological research.

Uhm.  Yeah.

*melt*

Oh holy crap yes.

And all the little ones when you switch to him in party.  "My love?"  "Your wish" and "Say the word" all delivered dripping with hotness by Mr. Valentine.

But her MATERIAL isn't as good.  You can't click through every option with her and hit comic gems four out of five times.  Four out of five times you're going to get angry Morrigan and approval loss.

Simply because Alistair is a comic character and Morrigan isn't.

Five out of Five Oghren options are pure comic gold.  It doesn't mean the voice actor is better/worse.

I guess I can concede there.
"Have you ever licked a lamp post in winter?"

Alistair gets lots of funny.  But Morrigan gets the d'awwwww.

Alistair has a lot of awwwww too.  I just think Alistair's character has the huge advantage of delivering most of the exposition and narration and Steve Valentine makes the most of every moment.  If you talk to him at Ostagar and listen to him tell all the stories about Grey Wardens like you're sitting around a campfire, I'm much more enthralled than Morrigan talking about really...horrible things that scarred the everloving hell out of her.

Not to take anything away from Claudia Black at all, I just don't think she had the same opportunities to really shine.

And even as a male, I cringe at the idea of hearing "Tis cold in my tent..." in that coy, manipulative way.

*sigh*  Fine.  Let's get this over with.  And by the way.  Ew.

Yeah, you have to get past that to get to any real "romance" but you start out with just plain sex.  For me...it's cheap and unpleasant in fact.  She's not hot enough to put up so little effort.  Alistair WORKS for it.  Plus you can have sex with him a million times in a row and he's still happy to try again.  That's dedication.

I'm sure they did that on purpose!  They created a perfect (but of course wonderfully flawed) man that we would all go gaga over and then chose some of the most dramatic and heart-stomping things for the end.  But I would add that you can still get your happy ending, either riding off into the sunset or becoming king and queen.  I mean... I'd say the research points DIRECTLY to that being what women want in a love story.

In my exhaustive research of dime romance novel covers, I've come to the conclusion that what women want is the man to not be wearing a shirt while he holds her.  What ending has that?

LOL!

Put that in the epilogue.

"And Alistair and so and so lived happily ever after as king and queen...and he took his shirt off to hold her in his arms while the wind swept through her hair.  The end."

Oghren is AWESOME.  But kind of a one trick pony.  Alistair had a lot more range.

And it's more than that.  I saw somewhere that the writers for Alistair based him in part on Xander in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Malcolm Reynolds in Firefly.

I see it and they sold it.  The sad part is though...Alistair himself is nowhere near as strong a character as Xander or Malcolm.  They gave him all the charm and funny...they tragically left out the major things that made Xander and Malcolm so compelling.

Putting that bit in his character where Chantry or social dogma overruled his heart is where Alistair was oversold to his audience.

I can forgive that, really.  Seeing how the writers constructed him, and how WELL Steve Valentine sold him, I get it.

Funny thing is, I've seen Steve Valentine, didn't do a thing for me.  "No way, he was the host of "Estate of Panic?"  Entirely forgettable.  And I've always thought Claudia Black completely stood out in anything she did from every SciFi (I refuse to say SyFy) cameo to Pitch Black.

So it's the context.

You and I should check those out together sometime. Those things are pure comedy gold. I tried reading one of my aunt's books, I was on the floor rolling in laughter before I could get out of the first chapter. I had to return the book back to her, defeated. I just couldn't bear to read it.

Not true, and this common misconception is extremely annoying.  You don't have to make Alistair the king.

I think its great that the game can have so many "possibly grey endings". Tho ending up being the side dish can be annoying for the female gamers that dig Alistair... But hey it beats my character Aikkan having to run off trying to find morrigan "grrr" but fart me a lullaby i hope my character gets to find her in a expansion an encounter i hope thats influenced depending on the standing you had with her at the end of Origins.

I'm a guy and i really didnt like Alistair. He constantly hides behind jokes and he is really really repressed personality wise and sexually.

but he is classically very good looking and can be funny even if it feels really fake to me (not because of voice actor, who did a great job. like most of the voice actors in DA except Anora. Especially approve of Claudia Black (Mor)/Steve Valentine (Al)/Steve Blum (Og).

he is also tough physically and not an idiot no matter what Morrigan says.

he can be a leader.

actually he has ****loads of qualities THE MAJORITY of women mostly go for.

doesnt matter if hes polygons or real, he looks and acts human enough to be treated as a human - we're not talking mario here.

Surely the girls loved Ohgren?  When he gets that really sleazy voice going and talks about polishing the weapon?
[*]Oghren: So. With the boss, aye?
[*]Alistair: Pardon?
[*]Oghren: You and the boss. Rolling your oats.
[*]Alistair: I don't know--
[*]Oghren: Polishing the footstones.
[*]Alistair: --what you're--
[*]Oghren: Tapping the midnight still, if you will.
[*]Alistair: what are you going on about?
[*]Oghren: Forging the moaning statue. Bucking the forbidden horse. Donning the velvet hat.
[*]Alistair: Are you just making these up right now?
[*]Oghren: Nope. Been saving 'em.  Heheh.
