Hehe!  I guess I should have seen it coming but honestly I didn't think that was it.  Next thing I know, I'm reading the credits.  What now?  I'm only lvl39.  Do I start over and explore?  Is there a transfer of credits, etc. possible?

EEK!  I just figured it out --- I've started from the beginning as a lvl40 with the credits and build I last had before I completed the game once.  What a strange way to handle getting to level 60!  I guess I can explore the universe, that is once I get the COM again.  I can even make some moral adjustments. And maybe I can even save Wrex this time!  Oh, well ... I guess a more intelligent lifeform than I decided this was the only way.

I have good news and bad news. The good news is that there's a level cap on the first playthrough which comes in when you hit level 50, so you couldn't have got to Level 60 in one go anyway. In fact I've seen it said on these forums that there are actually not enough experience points available in the entire game to get to level 60 in one go anyway. The bad news is that the gap between levels increases as you level up so that going from 51 to 60 needs a similar amount of experience as going from 1 to 50. If you only made it to level 40 on the first play I'm not sure you'll actually be able to get to 60 on the second and I think you'll probably need a third. I didn't even get to 60 on the second playthrough and I started it from 50. I made some mistaken assumptions about what shortcuts I could take, mainly lazily destroying enemies from inside the Mako instead of getting killing them on foot, racing past some enemies instead of killing them and not driving all over every planet looking for artefacts. Doesn't sound like much but I ended up on level 59 and about 80 thousand experience points short of levelling up.

I have a bit more good news for you. If you're not sure you can face a third playthrough don't worry too much. I still imported my level 59 femshep from that game into ME2, and the experience and talent points that carried over was enough to start at level 3 (I think) and eventually max out at 30 by the end of the game, including all the stuff from the Zaeed, Kasumi, Overlord, Firewalker and Shadow Broker DLCs (but not Arrival which I left until after I completed the main game). Admittedly the extra credits might have been nice but as far as experience goes I don't think I lost out by importing someone who was 'only' level 59. The good news for you is that I think you take the same amount of points and money into ME2 with a level 50 character as you do with a level 59, so if you're willing to settle for that you really only need to worry about getting higher than level 50 by the time you finish your second game. And that's going to be a lot easier from level 40 than reaching all the way up to 60.

Thanks for all that info and encouragement! I'm going to focus on exploration, side quests and gathering stuff ... I thought this game, like so many of the D&D genre games I'm accustomed to, would lead me naturally to lvl60 ... but I guess not.... or that after doing the main quest I'd still be able to complete things. Maybe the developers felt the other story lines would seem pointless once the main quest was done.

Yeah, once you walk away from Anderson and whoever's left at the end that's the end of the game. Starting again means literally starting again, so to maximise points in one playthrough you need to explore every planet you can land on, do every mission and assignment there is including any DLC, and kill as many enemies as you can on foot because experience is reduced if you do it with the Mako's guns (though there's no reduction if you weaken it with the Mako and then get out to finish it off on foot, which unless you're super tough is about the only sane way to get full experience points for killing Thresher Maws). By the way, that's one of the things that they changed in ME2 - you can do a minimalist game by just doing the core missions and ignoring everything else and then fly around the galaxy exploring and doing all the side quests after you've beaten the final boss. Personally I don't feel the narrative flows quite right if you do it like that and in my first play of ME2 I just left Arrival to do after I'd played the main game. I'm about 2/3 through another playthrough and this time I'm going to leave a lot more, mainly because I want to want to take a certain character along that you don't acquire until fairly late in the game.

BEWARE ME3 will require points you gain from doing every mission and goal in the other games, don't go skipping them.

I finished my very 1st playthrough of ME today, and I made it to level 50, on the Citadel, close to the very end. You need to go to every cluster and system and wipe out everything and harvest everything to accomplish that. I did so, and got lucky in the last 30 mins. of the game.

the most important thing to remember is do not delete your ME profile.

There is a cap at 50, meaning it takes 2 playthroughs to get to level 60.

But once you reach level 60 in one playthrough, and the achievment is unlocked, you are able to get to level 60 in a single playthrough on any playthroughs that follow.

It is difficult to get to 60 in a single playthrough, just remember to use the Mako again larger enemies, but to get out and finish said enemies with your gun. You will get double the XP and credits.

You can't get to level 60 in a single playthrough without using exploits.
