Maric = Morrigan's dad.

:sick:

I haven't read the books yet and certainly hope you're joking. DA:O can actually end width Alistair doing the "magical sex rite". Oh my god. :blink::D:o

And then Morrigan would be named Morgaine/Morganna, and Alistair would be Arthur. The ill-begotten son of an incestuous relationship will strike Arthur down, for he is Mordred.

So, those were Wardens then, I guess? ^^

I'm just wondering... In DA: Origins Alistair mentions his mother's amulet that you later can find and give to him, where did he get it from?

It never specifically said. Alistair's mother's amulet was just his, we assume it was all he had of his mother and perhaps Maric let him have it. Least that's how I think.

And wasn't Fiona a brunette? I believe she was.. it was Katriel who was a blonde.

I just finished reading both books, and enjoyed them both very much! Funny that on the day I finished THE CALLING, the expansion announcement is made featuring THE ARCHITECT... it just makes me feel like the novel should be made required reading or something because it's such important (and interesting) background for what's going to go down in March!

Anyways, yes Fiona was a brunette. Yes, that baby is Alistair for sure! Ever since the Stolen Throne, I'd been wondering about that 3 hr business in Flemeth's hut... I mean.. it certainly seems possible that if Morrigan turns out to be Maric's offspring, the witch could have done this whole babymaking thing in vitro rather than actually doing anything remotely classifiable as "intimate." And then, since Alistair is alive in the expansion (obvious from the trailer), then Alistair didn't have to make the archdemon sacrifice, so it could be the expansion's canon that the two did the deed Arthur and Morgaine style.

One nitpick I had: how did Hafter get across that chasm in The Calling, the one where they had a narrow ledge and had to cross it tied to a rope!

I'm really intrigued by the Utha character, I hope that she gets some action in the expansion. I don't know how much of her motivation for her decisions towards the end of the novel were her own (she went through some trying things in the thaig and the Fade that may have made her feel more strongly about the whole Blight business..I guess) and how much her decisions were motivated by the insane "i hear the cylon song!" mind bending that seemed to warp Genevieve and Bregan. I liked how sort of screwy those two ended up, and not being able to tell how much was them, how much was foreign (the architect's doing), and how much was just heightened/warped from the taint.

Further, I was not a big fan of Fiona - I thought she was just a little too cliched, moreso than the rest of the adventurers. I suspected pretty much immediately that Nicolas and Julien were lovers too!

Personally I've never seen the whole theory of Morrigan being Maric's child. Maybe I need to reread that part with that in mind. I've always seen Maric's 'shaken'-ness as being because of some of the revelations Flemeth tells him, which also explains why he doesn't talk to Loghain about it. Especially the line he was told that Loghain will betray him time and again, each time worse than the last. Still there's multiple ways for Alistair to survive without sleeping with Morrigan.. Self-sacrifice, Loghain sacrifice, or male PC sleeping with Morrigan.

But yeah most of that is just my opinion. I just feel Maric has three children, Morrigan not being one of them, and that if there's a 'canon' ending it's self-sacrifice. But most likely there never will be a canon on that ending.

As for Hafter, have you ever played Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princesss? You can cross rope as a wolf. Maybe Hafter was pretty agile for a big dog :P

Wow, just finished reading The Calling, and I haven't read anything that good in awhile. Definitely puts Alistair in a whole new light.

Hmm, no spoilers, so I'll just end with that. It's definitely a favorite book of mine, based on a vg or no.

As far as I'm aware, the Stolen Throne has been translated into German, French, Spanish and Polish. I don't think the Calling has been translated yet.

This is the first book I ever read in english. Just because I could not wait any longer for a translation and it was well worth it. Thank you very much Mr. Gaider I really fell in love with the characters you created.

The wait for Awakening is going to be a pain now...

I remember in the game when you do the personal quest for Alistair that he wasn't completely sure that Goldanna was his sister. He just did some research and she turned up as the most likely candidate. It does make sense that they would use her mother as Alistair's "mother" considering she died during childbirth, no way to get the truth that way. Probably let Goldanna overhear that it was the king's but none of that is concrete. I really hope that they explain a lot more. There just seems to be so many loose ends. It makes me crazy to know everything.

I really enjoyed reading "The Stolen Throne." The drama was so well written. It was... intense. There were time where I would stop reading cuz the book made me so angry or sad. lol  Probably one of the best book I've ever read. It changed my perspective of Loghain and Maric completely... and now I feel bad for killing Loghain at the Landsmeet. =(

I love Rowan, I love the fact that she was a strong will woman, and not some dumb useless chick who gets injured every 5 seconds. Katriel on the other hand... got what she deserved. I thought it was justice for Maric to kill her... cuz if it was justice for Maric to kill all those men who killed his mother, then Katriel is no different. Such a satisfying ending.. but that didn't last long. I was cheering when Maric killed Katriel, then 2 mins later it went back to it's depressing atmosphere. ;_;

Well done David, for making me hate, rage, and love this book at the same time. <3

at the end of the book, it says that duncan is 2nd in command, so who was in charge? is it the warden you save who dies? riordan or whatever?

Finished this book the other night. I thought the first half of it was pretty slow, but it picked up and got really good by the end. I think all that "dungeon crawling" got to me and seemed to drag on, but once the story started to pick up (near the Fade sequences) I couldn't put the book down.

Overall, I'm leaning toward the Stolen Throne as my favorite among the two, mainly because I got more into the Loghain/Maric/Rowen subplots than I did any of Maric's companions in The Calling, and also because there weren't any real dragging down moments in Stolen Throne.

There's no doubt in my mind that Allistair is Fiona's son. And I'm still not sure what Maric did in Flemeth's tent that night. It would be kind of cool if Morrigan was his daughter, and would explain why Allistair and Morrigan seem to like to bicker like siblings in the game. ;)

Thanks for writing these two great novels, I thouroughly enjoyed them!

Here's hoping (along with many others) the publishers will ask/allow you to write a third entry into the series! After all, trilogies are standard by now :P

Just finished both books after 2 2/3 playthroughs of the game. I very much enjoyed them, and am fascinated by this new world Gaider and co have created. I also find Gaider's love of Joss Whedon apt, because like Whedon he has a particular style, sense of humor, and thematic inclination that make his work unique. I look forward to more books.

As far as the Alistair son question, well, pointing out that half elves are humans, essentially, seems to be the biggest hint to me. Clearly from Gaider's resonses on the forum to this thread, he has no interest in confirming or denying anything, and in the end I'm glad of it. In fact, the codex entries in the game often have conflicting info. Many are religous tracts or first person narratives, etc. So issues like how one feels about the Chantry are very much open to interpretation and role play.

I do have one abiding question, referenced early oin this thread. At one point Maric stops by a freeehold. Do we ever find out in book or in game what that house is?

I felt exactly the same way. I loved Rowan and Loghain as well ,he was honorable the entire book. It sucks that Rowan died and It would have been nice to read about the last three years of the war.The story felt hopeful and tragic at the same time... When men would fall to Marics feet and cry in relief because he was still alive and there was still hope - that was amazing...

 I didn't care for Katriel...and I don't see that Loghain tricked Maric into killing her. Even if Loghain had mentioned Katriel was remorseful, Maric might have let her live, but it's not like they were going to go skipping into the sunset together. When Rowan tells Maric (that Katriel cut ties) all he says is "that doesn't change anything". He wasn't furious, he didn't confront Loghain and ask why he omitted that information...

I started reading The Calling... It's not the same without Rowan. And poor Maric; he was depressed and mourned Rowan the whole 2 years...
