Just finished the book, and I want to play the game right now lol. David, it was very well written, and I think you develop characters very well.

Any plans for another book?

I just finished the last 3/4 quarters of the book in one sitting. Damn, where does the time go! When I last checked it was morning...

I just finished the book today, and its a grand read - full of action, character development, highs, lows, and twists and turns. I would recommend you get this made into a movie, but have to wonder if we'd just get an Uwe Boll.

In the beginning of their journey, (Day 2), King Maric insisted that the party stop at a particular farmhold on the outskirts as they skirted the edge of the central Bannon. "Who was within was anyone's guess, and the Grey Wardens waited outside for the King to finish his business." No explanation by the author about the stop. Could this have been to visit Katriel's grave? [See page 54 of the book.]

So I have a copy of the calling in hand. My only question is does it contain spoilers from the game? or is it a safe read?

This is no Chihuahua. Its a BIG dog, maybe even a Mabari wardog race.
About 40-60 kilogramm living meat.
And now you try to glide along a wall on a footcase with just enough space to stand, when you are pressed against the wall, so that you wont fall AND having such a living back pack on your shoulders.
I had a 40 kg shepherd dog and when he was injured i tried to carry him. It is difficult enough to heave him up and hold in front of you against your chest, not talking about having him for minutes on your shoulders :)

I have had dogs in our party while caving in Texas, New Mexico, and Mexico.  They will ride in a backpack for vertical and technical ropework.  We have also rigged a chest harness to a safety rope and let them walk it.  In general they seem more sure-footed than people.

Anything a human can walk a dog can walk just as well except slippery surfaces - there a human's larger surface foot area seems to catch up and sometimes surpass having four legs and claws.

Just my $.02-

being a grey warden is surely no happy thing.... with all the odds julien and nicolas propably are the only ones who found a "happy" way around all that.

sortof makes the whole thing more interesting though.

I was really enjoying the book, and then I got to chapter 18 and a super-rediculous twist took place... so I put her down for a while. but ill get back into, I CANT WAIT TO FRIGGIN FIGHT BEGRAN AND GEVIVERE AND UTHA

nevermind just the architect and uthars

Does anyone else see the book setting up the ending of DA:O to be roughly as follows:

Antepenultimate boss:  Utha (or maybe you can convice her the folly of her ways...)
Penultimate boss:  Architect
Final boss:  Old God

Finished it yesterday, guess I'm all set now for the release of the game. Awesome job on fleshing out the universe/Thedas a bit more prior to release David. Was pretty impressed/quiet for a while after finishing it, definitely had an impact.

I found the first book to be really good though a little simplistic in parts. This book was much better overall especially in character development. David is close to a master of character interaction. Both of the books have me ready to play the game!

Wow just finished the book. SO much better than The Stolen Throne. I love the ending of this one. But who is Meric's son going to end up being in the game?

Also why did Utha have to turn bad? I loved her then bam she is the only one of the Group to be dumb enough to take the taint....

Mr. Gaider, wow. You should have been writing books long before now. We have been missing something for many years now. I wish to commend you on this book. You have opened up this game world, and now I can't wait to see how far it expands. I would love to see it surpass D&D. Thanks for the wonderful read. Now if I can just get my wife to start reading fantasy, I will have accomplished something!

Okay, I just finished the Calling, and I absolutely loved it!

I have to say, one of the best things about it was Mr. Gaider's random sense of humor. I swear, one of my favorite parts was where Duncan was trying to think of all the good things he was fighting for, and he decided upon cookies!

Grey Wardens: Stop the Blight, Save the Cookies!

That made me laugh. ;P

And I thought the Architect was adorable, actually. :) He was so akward. And a little corpsey thing! *will be sad when she eventually has to kill him*

I can't find the Human Noble origin video  anywhere, but doesn't the Couslands steward a castle over in the Bannorn? He may have been visiting the Human Noble's parents.

As posted earlier, I can't seem to find a connection to anything with regards to the groups stop at that farm. The one on the way to the deep roads in "The Calling". Maric does his business and they leave. i don't know who that might even be after a quick readover of both books and related sections to that area.

I have read both books. I found Throne of Blood much more interesting and epic. The Calling was more of a "dungeon crawl" and the characters simply not as interesting (with the exception of Kell & Duncan). Throne of blood was Loghain's story as much as Maric's and Loghain is simply kick ass.  The Calling is still a good read which feels much more relevant to Origins and presents the background of the darkspawn, the Old Gods, the Blight etc.

I felt that the Architect's proposal seemed unreal.  It felt like humans/surface dwelers were giving up much more thah the darkspawn. The  Grey Wardens have an oath to stop the Blight, but I would guess it is in the name of humanity and humanity is exactly what they would be giving up.  I guess the taint had corrupted enough to forget this.  Still I think we were giving up too much for "peace" and the darkspawn.

I just finished the book recently as well and I really loved it. It was more enjoyable than the first book...loved the character interaction and backstory to everything.

The only thing I am confused on is that there muststill be quite a bit of time between the end of the book and the games opening...I thought that the two books would fill in all the gaps..but I guess not.

**********SPOILERS**********

As far as we know in the game Maric is dead already..and his son Cailan has taken over the throne..so I thought that in the end of The Calling Maric would have died...especially when he slept with Fiona I thought maybe he would be infected and eventually die as Grey Wardens do..butthe story ended well before that...so what about the missing space..

**********SPOILERS**********

So is there another book to fill in the gap? Or is it going to be filled in within the games lore and such?

Oh well I read Stolen Throne a few weeks ago and I enjoyed it very much. Now I am looking forward to being all over the Calling. Just finished exams yesterday, got my copy of "The Calling" today morning and dragon age origins comes out next week friday. Oh yes, great success!

I'm through chapter five now, I must say I enjoy your writing style greatly Gaider.

I particularly loved the (tiny spoiler) story regarding the elf mage and the city cat she befriended.  Really effective way of getting across her character - as otherwise she'd just be a prickly elf with a grudge.  Because of that story the reader understands that she's a lot more.

I'm wondering if you're going to cut back to Loghain at any point, so far still in the deep roads.  We'll have to see.

Always a treat to read your stuff though.  Great second book so far.

NewYears1978, I thought the same thing at the end. I am guessing it will be revealed at the beginning of the game (perhaps a strategic reason to get the game on release day!). My excitement is going to be meeting some of the characters from The Calling!

I would enjoy meeting them too..but not sure if we will..not sure how much time has passed since the end of The Calling and the beginning of the game...if David popped in he could answer but I don't see him around here much anymore.

We know several years pass at least..because Duncan is quite young in the book and in the game he is much older and matured..so it's possible the others could be dead..or in the game...guess we will see.
