With an enemy as pwoerful as the reapers the death of Shepard is certainly a logical possibility.

But I wouldn't oppose a happy ending either.

As a side effect of defeat, yeah...

It's probably the best option to let Shepard rest in peace.
So my answer is - yes, I'm fine with it.

I'm fine with Shepard's death as long as
1. His death is not the only optioin.
2. His death is depicted heroically and saves much more.
3. His death makes sense (not like facing three out-of-nowhere choices).
4. The whole thing does not stop at his death. His crew and choices will be mentioned with closure.

Yes. Even in the headcanon I wrote I had my Paragon Shepard die. I was expecting it by the time I got back to Earth.

That said, like a lot of people what I really want is Shepard's fate to be the result of player choice and/or preparedness over the course of the game. I don't want to be railroaded into one choice of any kind. Games hinging on player choice is what Bioware does (or did) best. I don't see why they didn't follow the model of the DA:O ending. That was a successful game, right?

As a possible option because of very low war-assets and bad choices in a finale battle? Yes, it would be okay...

But predefined with no way out? Death being the only solution? No, I am not a fan of martyrdom. Pesonal taste, I guess, but I want Shepard to live...

Because playing through the series again knowing she is going to die is no fun to me. And no explanation about the "positive sides" of the current ending can change that

I have no problem with Shep dying being a *possibility* in the ending ... not just a foregone conclusion. So, if its the only option, no; an option, sure!

I'd like the option, but some of my sheps feel too invincible to die at the end.

As ONLY the option - no, it's just wrong.

One good, one bad with him dying is fine. But in the perfect one, hell to the no!

I'd be ok with Shep dying. Don't get me wrong I'd love the option of a happy ending but I wouldn't have a problem with Shep death. Actually had Shepard died sitting next to Anderson i'd have loved it, it would have made for such a powerful ending to Shepard's story.

Asking for the option that Shepard can survive is hardly asking for too much since he or she for some reason already can survive in our current ending options.

If his sacrifice resulted in an ending better than the one we saw?

Personally, I think having Shepard die to save galactic civilization and stop the Reapers would've been a better way to have a "bittersweet" ending.

I think it worked well in Dragon Age:Origins with the Ultimate Sacrifice ending so I think if we had an ending that was otherwise happy with Shepard dying then that would be a good way to conclude it, especially since this is the last Mass Effect game with Commander Shepard.

Absolutely and after thinking about it further I would also be fine if Shepard rejects the starchilds choices and chooses to fight until the end with the rest of the species and in the end the reapers win and the cycle continues.  But none of my Shepards would ever agree to the options starchild gives.

I'm okay with him dying, but there ought to be a reason for it, like in ME2 where he loses too many squaddies and there's no one left to help him. Not just because Mr. Walters thinks that would be cool and arty.

No.

In a game like Mass Effect, there shouldn't be any of, "Shepard has to ___"

This!

If the crew was saved, everyone else lived, the reapers were destroyed, and it was a happily ever after.

I'm fine if it's an option, even if it is the most prevalent option.
But there should be an option where he lives too (and I'm not talking any of this one more breath stuff either)

If my war assets are not high enough or I make a stupid choice then he should die, but otherwise no.

Absolutely, a noble sacrifice to save the universe is well within Shepard's character.

You know what, I was wrong.

No it isn't.

Shepard was told he couldn't combat the Reapers in ME1 and took one down.
Shepard was told attacking the Collector Base was a suicide mission in ME2 and got through with no losses.

Shepard hears the odds and says "frak that."

I would be okay with some endings resulting in Shepard's death as long as he/she can defeat the reapers while staying true to the life-embracing themes of the trilogy.
A 'perfect' ending would also be nice, but if I would settle for a logical ending to the story that didn't betray the whole.

Here's what I don't like about what many people are saying. The ME games are fantastic because you get to make choices that a person would have to make in the situations you're in, but at the end it's lame because you can't choose whether you live or die.

Don't you all understand that just because a game is founded on choices, not all choices are yours to make?

Almost NO ONE in real life, or in the Mass Effect universe, gets to choose whether or not they die.

And what if it was a choice? What if there was a fourth path off to the side, which was the "Save everyone, and live" path. That isn't even a choice. There's no challenge there. No debate about where to go. You save everyone and live. Yay.

The fact of the matter is, Shepard does get choices, and Shepard CAN live if you make the right one.

What the game is missing, isn't a live or die choice, it's missing epilogue after the fact which explains how the sum of your choices played out.

There is a level of realism and immersion brought to the game by the choices you make, but the choice of life and death isn't realistic at all, because almost no one gets to make that choice for themselves. They play the hand their dealt.

Yes and no, i think there should be several outcomes with some leading to his death while others have a somewhat happy ending.
