So here's the problem, and I may just be SOL on this one but I thought I'd see if anyone can help. Mass Effect 1 had been crashing at the configuration display. I updated to 1.02 and that fixed that issue. Now when starting the game, black screen, "Mass Effect - Not Responding". If I disable my audio device (Realtek), game starts up just fine... no audio. Any idea how to fix this or get around it? Listing my specs below:

Nvidia Driver is 296.10

TIA

What Realtek driver? Microsoft has been including garbage as the default for Realtek, instead of the real driver, since Vista, I think. Go directly to Realtek to get the correct one.

P. S. ME-1, the Xbox release, is past three years old now, and the PC conversion is approaching that age.  Rather few people come around to answer questions here any more.  The computer I used when I played ME-1 has long since been broken down for usable parts, and I never installed the game on newer PCs here, so I can't load it to trigger my memory about things it may have done.

Use a professional quality Search engine, such as Bing, Google, or Yahoo, with redirection command included, to look through the forum archives.  Here's the command to include:

I have R2.67 (6.0.1.6526) which is the latest driver, I downloaded it direct from Realtek when I built this PC.

As a side note I have tried older Realtek Drivers as well, made modifications to the BioEngine.ini file as mentioned in other posts, all to no avail. The only thing that lets the game start is to disable the Realtek High Definition Audio device in Device Manager. It's possible there is no "fix" for this outside of a different audio setup (meaning purchase a card with a different chipset other than Realtek), but I thought it would be odd that I would be in a minority with the large amount of Realtek chipsets out there. Anyone got any ideas?

I made a suggestion, but the site's software lied about posting it, so I have to write it all over. The archives here are two years' worth, with all kinds of information, but the on-site Finder is broken. Instead of the most recent threads, it will only give you the very oldest.

Use Bing, Google, or Yahoo instead, and a redirector to confine the search to this Social Site, like this:

site:social.bioware.com

Just a quick update. I went and bought 2 different audio cards (one a USB Creative X-Fi, the other a PCI Audigy, just to get some options). Both don't work, same exact issue down to the letter. No matter what I do freezes at load UNLESS i disable the Audio Driver (Realtek is disabled already). I've ruled out audio devices but in the log file on failures looks like this:

I've searched but I can't find anyone with this specific issue. I suppose it may just be a lost cause but I'd give this one last shot.

Thanks in Advance and in Reverse as well (Gorath)!!!

OK, a possibility here is software conflict. You don't have any Asus hardware that installed Gamer OSD or Game Doctor do you? They are inimical to ME.

Nope, nothing Asus related on here. But I tend to agree, something configuration-wise is messing this up and keeping it from loading right. I suppose this may be my oppurtunity to do a Windows clean install. *sigh*

Start with a Clean Boot first.
