Shale seems much better at generating and sustaining threat compared to the other warrior tanks I've used. After I've gone through using all of the characters for various playthroughs, Shale will probably be my permanent tank should I play beyond that.

I prefer shale because he has more utility, he can do decent dps, has great aoe abilities and has ranged attacks to boot.

As far as tanking potential alone I'd say Alistair can be a little bit better but mostly because he can wear armor that ends up being superior to shale's crystals.

Shale has some utility, some of his stances are amazing when dealing with some large groups. One stance that turns her back into a statue, but increases resistances and health regen to all party members within the aura, she seemed to hold threat in that stance too, even though she's not doing anything except standing still. Shale seems to be a good Utility tank where Alistair/Loghrain are more the classic sword and board tanks.

On my first play through I dumped points into Con and Dex for shale, since she doesn't need to worry about gear. I wanted to make her harder to hit, with a rather large health pool to take the hits that do come through. Late game I swapped to Loghraine, since the gear started to outweigh the need for Shale, or so I thought, might try taking her through to the end on a play through to see how she fares against the final encounter.

Alistair starts with low CON for a tank. Getting him to like you will increase this, however you might also want to put some stat points there too.

it just seems like Alister is gimped to start as a tank.... you need STR for armor you need DEX for avoidance and talents and you need CON to keep him alive.... Shale just needs con and a bit of STR and he is good to go

Real men play the game without tanks.

I prefer Alistair personally. If setup with the right points and having Threaten .. he holds aggro well and also have him setup with Taunt.

FYI. Shale is a "she" not a he! :-)~ Even though the voice sound male.

I think Shale is better for hordes of melee attackers and Alistair is better vs ranged/magic users. That's what I'd base on their abilities/talents. Also, I try hard to use Shale over Alistair, but it makes all the cool massive plate armor you find in the game worthless. Both Shale and the og don't use cool items, and takes away the pleasure of finding gear to improve your characters, making it a little boring to upgrade them.

I knew Shale was a she the moment I read her "Does these crystals make me look fat?"-line.

Had Alistair as my primary tank through most of the game and only used Shale in Orzammar. They're both good at what they do as far as I'm concerned. Shale has a nice health pool, but I notice she gets knocked to the ground *a lot*. Alistair has less hp, but he doesn't get slammed to the ground nearly as often--could be all the physical resist stuff he's got kitted.

Alistair is far superior in my opinion.

Taunt by itself is enough to get aggro. loose mobs can just be crowd controlled by mages. so the difference between the two in this respect is immaterial as far as i'm concerned.

Alistair takes MUCH less damage. with his shield talents he becomes immune to flanking and immune to knockdown. he'll achieve higher armor and defense levels as well. if you gear him for it he can get extremely high spell resistance as well.

Shale will always consume more mana/health poultices to keep alive than Alistair. those are resources that could be spent killing the enemy faster.

and finally, with Starfang equipped and using Assault or Overpower (with the Shield Mastery talent to double the bonus damage) Alistair can hit like a mack truck. don't be fooled by his tank warrior status, he can put the beatdown on someone if necessary.

the biggest different between the two characters that i see as legitimate is that Shale develops more quickly. Alistair lacks survivability before level 9 and lacks damage before level 12. but for the mid-late game (levels 13-endgame) Alistair is much better in my opinion.

I had Shale in the final boss battle and he did quite well. Kept hearing him yelling, so he was using taunt and his other taunt-like attack he gets as a golem. He didn't die once, and he was doing good damage to the boss. The funny thing about that was that I forgot to kill the adds and they killed Wynne and Loghain, so it was just me and Shale left. This time, Loghain stole my kill!

If you put a single point in constitution with Alistair, you sadly don't know how to gear/spec a warrior tank in this game.

Constitution is this game for most characters is utterly useless.

Get your strength to 42 on Alistair and then just stack Dexterity. Get a 3 socketted weopon and put all physical resistant runes in the weopon. (Physical resistance stops the overwhelm/dragon grabs/ogre pick ups etc)

At around level 18ish on my playthroughs with Alistair, he was taking almost no damage. Infact against the high dragon on nightmare with my party at around level 18 with Alistair tanking, regenerate was enough to keep Alistair alive the entire fight and with almost 100 physical resistance he never got grabbed once... now my rogue and dog needed tons of healing from all the anti-melee abilities.

Dexterity in this game literally makes your tank unhittable - add in some physical resistance and your tank is hardly ever in danger of dying.

But I suppose people are free to spec how they want - but the OP asked the question and I answered.

Alistair is far and away (other than a player made tank ofc) the best tank in this game by MILES.

Shield Wall + Masteries makes Alistair immune to knockdown already, but does it make immune to the grabs/overwhelms? Otherwise, stacked Physical Resistance is either partial wasted or fully wasted. I usually stack spell resist gems for him and put him in Juggernaut set for spell protection.
