My favorite ones:

Kevin VanOrd‏:
The Internet accused Bioware of selling out. Then, it demanded Bioware sell out. Congratulations, Internet: you got what you wanted.

Brendan Sinclair:
So if the government comes knocking, games are art. But when we hate the ending, they're products and the customer is always right. Got it.

What's wrong with demanding new endings/different endings or more closure and the like? It's basically all about demand and supply. The customers have several wants and BioWare has the possibility to cater its (potential) customers. Big deal.

That some can't be civil or constructive about it.. Well that's a different story alltogether.

How is working to please the masses "selling out"...? That's the exact opposite of selling out. Selling out would mean ignoring us to please big business...

I don't think its spineless to make a change, as long as they are not doing so with the sole purpose of appeasing - it should fit with their vision of the story. That being said, a lot of people do flip flop on stances depending on which better suits them at the time.

This thread? Right here? It's going to be GREAT. Oh god. I can't even wait.

*goes to get popcorn*

(for the record: changing the ending = selling out. adding additional scenes or content to the ending = fine. In my humble opinion.)

Well now that they are oppenly insulting Bioware maybe the claim that they are being paid by EA to support the endings might go away...

BioWare putting itself in a better position to make money = selling out? Sounds more a like a growing company that will be around a long time.

Selling out means that they will compromise their principles to apease someone else. Their money comes from the fans too so caving to you might look like "selling out" for "plenty"(xD) of people.

Im neutral on this, i dont dislike the endings but im glad Bioware will do something about it just to make this forums more tolerable...

the issue these people are forgetting is that its pretty much all of the core fan base that is complaining.

This makes it incredibly important to resolve any issues those fans have with your product no matter what the product is. It makes sense on both a business sense and publicity sense because you are showing you are caring for your customers opinions and potentially be able to make more money off them in the long run because they will probably buy new DLC and buy future products as well.

I congratulate Bioware on going back on there plans and help to ensure the very foundations of the company remain intact and hope this issue does not come up again.

Aww, so gamespot is mad at BioWare for admitting their game is less than perfect after gamespot gave it a perfect score. Ok, Kevin and Brendan, I gotcha.

Since when is pleasing the overwhelming majority of your customers considered a bad thing?

The implicit assumption there being that art cannot be a product, and products can't be art.

So I guess the only true art is stuff people offer the world for free!

It's like these guys don't understand how other mass-appeal art works -- they all go through this. Look at Bladerunner for a blatant and egregious example of change or Brazil for a massively altered ending.

Other media has come to terms with it and has put measures in place (editors, focus groups, test screenings, etc.) to reduce the prevalance and cost associated with having to deal with a consumer revolt.

Why do they think games should be more sancrosanct than books, movies, or other forms of mass-appeal art?

If they'd made a definitive ending to begin with, without all hinting and clues, we'd not be in this situation.
And we have yet to hear a final statement wether or not it was intended to expand on the current ending (see indoc), since it might still be.

Making comments like selling out and alike just fall short.

It sounded to me from Ray's comment that they aren't really selling out artistically, they are adding to the ending without out and out changing it. I'm surprised the press don't see that as a surprising middle ground.

Well, Blade Runner or Brazil the altered endings were terrible and the Director's Cut is generally held to be definitive.

A better example would be something like Fallout 3... and weirdly, I don't remember any of these people complaining when Broken Steel came out.

As the mods have been saying: complaining about complaints isn't productive. That's true even if you're Gamespot.

Bioware should shut these forums down and tell their "fans" to F off. These clowns will be back for their next release. You know it and I know it.

selling out; giving up artistic roots for easy cash flow.

changing the end; not really would be cash flow.considering if it's not for free, no one will get it and mass effect will go down in history as one of the most out of no where endings in the history of gaming.

I posted this in another forum earlier:
_______________________________________________________
I hope Bioware changes the endings because then I can start a petition to get the endings of other games changed that I didn't like.

For example:

1. Splinter Cell Conviction (The ending was too sad. I wanted Sam to return to the agency and after playing the Spinter Cell series for 5 games, I deserve to have the ending I want because I am so invested in the character).
2. Heavy Rain (They promised my choices would determine the endings and it's interactive, so I should be able to create the ending I want. I wanted an ending where the mother was the serial killer not the one they game me)
3. Alan Wake, Flower, and Journey (to vague...not enough details...no clear answers or closure...too many plot holes).
4. Super Mario Brothers (after all of that, all I get is a "thank you" from the princess c'mon what a letdown!)
5. Uncharted 1 and 2 (they added a magical or supernatural aspect to it at the very end. I didn't like that. It's inconsistent with the world)
6. Halo 3 (They promised that I was going to "Finish the Fight" but they lied because now they are making Halo 4.)

Anyway let's hope Bioware changes Mass Effect 3's ending, because I have a long list of games that could benefit from this precedent.
