Only doable in NG+ (import a ME3 character into a new game)
You can purchase 2 ranks. If you pick up a weapon that you already have, it is upgraded 3 ranks.
example: I have Mattock V from my first playthrough. I pick up another Mattock, it is upgraded to Mattock VIII, I can buy 2 upgrades and get Mattock IX and X.
Although it is probably a good idea to buy Mattock upgrades for VI, VII. Then when you pick up the Mattock again, it goes to X - saves a bit of credit.

Fastest way to do it is with the pistol you get right away. You can get lvl 10 the first time you get to Normandy Docking Bay with a couple upgrades.

Just for completness.... you can also do it via multiplayer. Spam through recruit packs (rather than saving for vet/spec) and you'd soon have one of the basic weapons up to lvl10 (assuming that the lvl10 query is relating to the achievement, this counts to tick it off).ashwind wrote...

I've come to found out that some weapons can't reach level 10. My Revenant is stuck at level 7, I can't upgrade it anymore.

Now if I beat the game with my soldier, can I make an Adept and upgrade my weapons to 10?

I dont think so. Because if you beat the game with a soldier, you cannot change your class to Adept when you do a NG+. If you start an Adept, it is counted as a new game.

Cyrax, if you can't upgrade your Revenant past level VII, then I have to ask two questions:
a) did you upgrade your Revenant to V in your first runthrough? If no, there may be a max number of upgrades you can pickup.
have you done the Cerberus invasion of the Citadel in your second runthrough? If not, wait until then and you can rreacquire a Revenant. When you pick it up a second time, you should get to X. If not, try again to upgrade a last time.

Just to clarify, I am not able to transport a ME2 character and upgrade to level 10? I have to complete the game with that character and then replay?

HOLY MOTHER OF NECROS, BATMAN.
On topic, ME2 imports are NOT NG+. Level VI-X weapons are only available once a Shepard has completed the story and has been imported using the Import ME3 Character function.

You don't have to upgrade a weapon at all in the first game, nor do you have to even pick it up to get to level X.
You can only purchase enough upgrades in NG+ to get a weapon to Level VII, it doesn't matter what level it was in the first game. Anytime you pick up a weapon in NG+ it will give you three levels.
You can verify this by using gibbed to set a new character game to NG+ state. If you do that, every weapon you pick up will be awarded as a Level III. There are a couple of things to keep in mind:
-Predator is bugged and it does not award you three levels in the prologue, which is why it is the only weapon it is actually impossible to get to level X in NG+ without modding.
-Spectre terminal weapons cannot be picked up anywhere, so you only get them at Level I when you buy them and have to pay for all the upgrades yourself.
-Grissom Academy is unusual in that it nominally has the Eviscerator and Mattock to pick up, but the security office also has an extra copy of one of them that is depends on either what class you are or your current weapon loadout (not sure which precisely). Although it seems tied to weapons... if I have AR's equipped I get an extra Mattock. If shotguns, an extra Eviscerator. However, if I set a new character game to NG+ it seems that one of the guns disappears from the original location (this last time the Eviscerator was gone), and then I could pick it up in the security office only.
-For some of the preorder weapons that later appeared in DLC's, if you had the preorder code and it was unlocked than usually in a new game they did not appear on their levels (since you already have Level 1), but they will appear in an NG+ state. For example, I had the Chakram Launcher since release, and they included it in Omega. If not in NG+, it is not there to pick up.
For history.

I've noticed this. I assumed this is to leave room for the +3 you are going to get from picking it up. But, I've not tested that.CYRAX470 wrote...
