This video is the beginning of a Krogan Soldier I have been putting together. The Krogan Soldier is criticised far too often as useless and unable to be played on Gold. This video A) disproves that notion and B) discusses various techniques and ideas for an effectvie Krogan Soldier on Gold. The forthcoming written guide will contain more detailed discussion. This video is a starter as it were. If you have ideas and suggestions that will improve the Krogan Soldier's play, please post in this thread and add to it. Thank You. Below the link:

Krogan Soldier Strategy Guide (Gold)

Hello all, after playing fairly extensively with
what has become my favourite class in Multiplayer I thought I would write up a
guide for all those who wish to enjoy the Krogan Soldier as well. This guide
will be limited to the Krogan Soldier on Gold though in time I may make one for
the Sentinel as well. The other reason for making this guide is the general
level of criticism levelled at the Krogan Soldier, which sadly and incorrectly
has been labelled ‘useless’ on Gold. Bearing this in mind, a virtual axiom of
all game play is that utility lies in the eyes of the beholder or better put,
in the hands of the player. That is to say that the Krogan Soldier is as useful
as the player using the class. To be sure, the Krogan Soldier is just that, a
Soldier. Comparisons with cloaking Infiltrators, chain overloading Engineers
and stasising Asari Adepts are fairly pointless, since the Krogan Soldier is
none of those things. The point of this guide is to make the Krogan Soldier as
effective as possible with what he has been given, rather than complain about
his alleged lack of abilities. Thus, I plan to fairly extensively, step by step
go through all the necessary elements of the Krogan Soldier to make him as
effective and ‘useful’ as he can possibly be. No doubt, any such kind of guide will
draw criticism and that is fine, I welcome it and stand by my claim that the
Krogan Soldier is an awesome class and supremely fun to boot.

General Tactics and Applications of the
Krogan Soldier on the Battlefield

Before delving into build, powers and weapons it
would be useful to discuss the different roles the Krogan Soldier can play on
Gold.

1.      Tank:
yes, you can tank on Gold, a rather classic role for the Krogan. You can also
die easily on Gold so tanking does not mean running into a crowd of 10 enemies
and going it alone. By tank I mean that barring the Vanguard, the Krogan is one
of the only classes/races that can go toe to toe (one on one) with almost any
enemy with a high probability of winning. Additionally large numbers of grunt
enemies can be tanked as well. I will go into more detail later on this.

2.      DPSer/Hit
and Runner: provided you have the necessary equipment and weapons, a Krogan
Soldier can take out most enemies one by one fairly rapidly. His storm speed
and superior health allow him quick movement from enemy to enemy across the map
and careful use of storming and cover create powerful possibilities for hit and
run tactics and a fairly good rate of dealing out damage.

3.      Bodyguard:
this is a mixture of both roles and something of a support role to squishier
classes. Engineers and Adepts cannot take the same level of punishment as a
Krogan and can easily be overwhelmed. Acting in a bodyguard position allows
more efficient teamwork and power synergy. More on this later.

The Build

There are several possibilities for
a Krogan Soldier build but I will likely only talk about what is most effective
in my experience. I welcome ideas others might have but for now I will focus on
what I believe to be most effective. Let’s look at each power starting at level
4 when you choose evolutions:

Fortification: this is a must and
not taking it is just bad, it adds both durability and power to the Krogan
Soldier.

Level 4: take increased damage
protection. The alternative is senseless to me because on Gold it is very
dangerous to purge your armour. Keep it on the whole time until the game is
over. The more protection, however miniscule, the better.

Level 5: take power synergy, it
will increase both the power and force of Carnage, enhancing it to allow you to
knock back Guardian shields to headshots and stagger protected enemies

Level 6: once again, the more
damage protection the better, take the 10% increase

Carnage: this is the bread and
butter power of the Krogan Soldier and exceptionally useful, it will keep you
alive in the heat of battle, decimate foes and add needed DPS.

Level 4: take the 30% damage
increase; Carnage already has an AOE of 1 meter, that is enough, the more
damage the better. 1.5 isn’t enough of an increase to merit taking it.

Level 5: take knock down, your
Krogan will thank you. Enemies that are still alive even with health are
dangerous, just take it. I cannot tell you how often Carnage knockdown has
saved my life or a teammate’s life.

Level 6: take the damage upgrade,
armour damage is always situational, whereas general damage is universal

Fitness: this is very important for
the Soldier. Take all of the bottom 4,5,6 evolutions, i.e. health and shields.
A pure melee build, whilst viable in certain situations, is not the most
efficient way to go.

Inferno Grenade: don’t bother with
this on Gold. It does very little damage to protected enemies and is likely the
worst of all grenades available. The Krogan Soldier build I am suggesting  only incorporates Fortification, Carnage,
Krogan Beserker and Rage.

Krogan Beserker: This tree will
allow you to deal out more damage and lower your Carnage CDs, in short
indispensable.

Level 4: take power damage and
weapon capacity

Level 5: take the 15% bonus to
power damage and force, essential for Carnage. Headshots already do tons of
damage.

Level 6: max out your shotgun
capacity; this will allow you very low CDs with Carnage and if desired, the
ability to carry a backup weapon if needed or wanted such as a light AR.

Very nice play, don't quite now how you manage to get shot so little when you lean out from cover though. I always get shredded when I do that, whether it's 1 second or 10.

Edit: Don't neglect the Inferno Grenades, as they can be very effective damage dealers to crowds in my experience.  Haven't taken my Krogan to Gold yet but It's been lethal on Silver, no reason why it wouldn't help soften up targets in Gold at the very least.

Inferno Grenades are fairly useless on Gold. They do very little damage and are limited by count, Carnage is a much better investment.

Interesting, I would have thought they'd be good against the unarmored crowds...

No, you're right, Only really good after you've stripped shields, and seems like everything has some kind of shielding in gold. Meh, glad I found out now instead of in a match fighting for my life lol

I will tak more extensively about Inferno in my written guide. Carnage is far more useful. Different would be the Sentinel because lift grenades are more useful. The best ones are cluster grenades, but they are not the Krogan's.

Whens the written guide coming, can you give an ETA?

Whats your opinion on the Krogan soldier vs sentinel?

Edit:i'd also like to note people who say the krogan sucks like me on gold aren't saying it's not viable. It's simply inneffiective when compared to just about any other class. We have little dps and the DR/hhigh shields make little difference on this difficulty due to our low speed/mobility and really only buys us a few more seconds out of cover anyways.

whats the exact build used in that video, at the moment i spec'd into grenades as I used a grall/falcon build where power recharge was so high it was useless, now with the falcon nerf its crowd control is ineffective so im going to reroll to what ever this is since it kicks ass + uses the grall which I am familier with

I'd put power distribution and loadout (inc. mods) in the video description.

Most likely, barring sudden death, in about a week's time.

The Krogan Soldier is imo better than the Sentinel, despite slightly better shields on the Sentinel. The reason for this is simply Carnage. Lift Grenades are quite good but they are grenades and incinerate lacks knock down and stagger.

I saw Incen rounds, and if he's avoiding Inferno Grenades he's running a 6/0/6/6/6

At least I think The Grenades are the second...  regarless you get the idea.  My Krogan's been 20 so long I forgot what the powers screen looks like.

That's some nice stuff going on overthere. Being the worse soldier ever, I can't really give a opinion on the video...I'm more on the "watch and learn" crowd. I wouldn't mind more of those o/

If I may suggest only one thing, it would be how would perform with different weapons. Since most of us are not fortunated enough to get good weapons, wich weapons would you sugest to hold while you wait for something better...and stuffs like that.

Quite simply, maxing out shotgun weight capacity. My Graal X gives you a 190% recharge rate, even a I is more than 100%. Carnage should be maxed out, Inferno Grenades completely ignored. Not worth it.

aye but what choices at the top end 6, I know he uses shotgun weight decrease over damage since since he says so, but I also knows he increased carnages force and always take health + sheilds over melle damage (I always do that) since melle in useless on gold except in 1v1 where you dont need instant kill levels of damage

its stuff like am I taking increased force power and damage over weapon damage the entire time and downing weight or what? since such a Heavy weapon reliant build seems to get the most benefit out of a passive weapon damage bonus, or do I need to put it into powers to increase carnages effectivness things like that

For Carnages superior CC?
I'm currently using the Krogan sentinel on gold, play against cerebrus and reapers mostly and use a build pretty similar to your soldiers(no grenades, low CD) I find that tech armor  detonation is a god send against phantoms and husk with a low CD.
Haven't watched the whole video yet but does Carnage stagger phantoms?  and if so are any power force/spec requirements needed. and if not how do you ussually manage phantoms?

Like I said, no grenades and you are right, maxed out weight capacity for optimal use of Carnage.

Carnage will not stagger a phantom that is protected, however the level 5 evolution gives it a knock down effect, which will KO them on health. Otherwise, it staggers all other enemies with protection and KOs on health. To maximise this effect you must choose force/power passives.

Then whats your strategy for phantoms? Kite? or do you purge/melee and that is enough for their barriers and proceed to carnage?

Also have to give the Graal another shot. I'm guessing you used damage/Accuracy mods or Damage/AP mods?

You can do both, specifically the following:

4> Damage & Capacity
Increase power damage and force bonuses by 5%.
Increase weight capacity bonus by 30 points.

  • Power Damage Bonus: 12.50%
  • Weight Capacity Bonus: 50
5>
Power Damage
Increase power damage and force bonuses by 15%.

6> Shotguns
Decrease the weight of shotguns by 30%.

Watch and listen to the video. The Graal will ALWAYS stagger a Phantom unless it has its magic fist thing. You will see several times how they are knocked back. I use a level 5 damage mod and a level 5 capacity mod, also mention this. No accuracy mod, it is accurate enough without one.
