1) Yes I played 3 full characters through Mass Effect 1 and 2, and played another clean build from ME 2 only - so call that 300+ hours, and then have played one of those through ME 3 and another about half way through (so call that anothe 60 hours).
2) I LOVED THE ENDING... thought it wrapped up alot of questions nicely, and left some others for my imagination to ponder on into my next playthrough.
For those who liked the ending and those who did not

Its fantastic, this is the kind of thing Bioware should have been asking..what is the experience that fans are having that is causing them to enjoy the game? what is the experience fans have had that caused them not to enjoy this game?
Its pretty apparent that Mass Effect 1 really did have a huge impact, Mass Effect 2 had an impact, perhaps not as sizable as the original, but it definitely feels like this:
Those who played all 3 games: Majority disliked
Those who played 2 games: Individual could go either way
Those who only played 1 game: Majority liked
That being said it proves that the ending is both good and bad at the same time. Its a great ending to a single story that is not somthing that people have spent 3 games to get to. So if ME3 was simply the only game in the franchise and it was just the story of Shepard beginning to end, the ending would be fantastic and done.
However since people had different experiences, those who had a little bit of time vested in the 2nd game, I feel could go either way. They may want more of an ending to wrap up and create closure, or they may find that based on the facts given to them in ME2, everything played out in a way that made sense to the story that they experienced through the 2 games.
Those who played all 3 games feel that based on 3 games worth of decisions and information presented to them, that the ending falls flat due to the loose ends that span across 2 complete games worth of info. There is a lot that happens in the 1st game that leaves questions for some of the second game to answer, but more importantly is still left for the third game. That long 5 year period to wait for answers to questions that happened so long ago in the plot is really what has caused this bitterness between fans and devs imo.
