I'm sorry but that's not only splitting hairs, it's actually wrong.  Casey clearly didn't check his biology before making that (pandering and ridiculous) statement.  Parthenogenic species (i.e. the Asari) are only "monogendered" in the sense that they are all *female*.  I'll accept that, due to not having a male gender role in their culture, that there's no such thing as "homosexuality" for Asari, but as far as Shepard's concerned, Liara's a woman.  So while Liara is arguable "not a lesbian/bisexual" a relationship with Femshep is a lesbian relationship as far as Shepard's experience and perspective are concerned.

Yeah, this.  I know I see her as a girl, and would consider a relationship with her a lesbian one.

Homosexuals are a tiny but very vocal minority, therein lies your answer.

OP, you're absolutely right.

I made a thread ^^^^^ about this very topic not too long ago. Straight Male's got an incredibly unfair advantage when it comes to romances.

I was told this, that many people had brought it up already :P  It's hard to find topics that aren't about the endings in these forums, so sorry if I stole your thunder.  But I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels this way!

Umm, no. Casey Hudson oficially stated that romance with Liara is not lesbian at all

Wow, really? I thought...you know, the boobs made it kind of obvious.  Is it because of the whole Asari are technically asexual but just look like women?

and because they're monogendered. So they can't really be in homosexual or heterosexual relationships.

Since they are both female (and BTW, 'female' in biological sense when it comes to species scale means having ovarian structure), then it is homosexual no matter of anything else.

He pretty much made that statement without thinking. The game itself says Asari are mono-gendered.
That means they're female. They look female, have female biology and regard themselves as female.

I think people are too obsessed over relationships, this isn't a dating sim.

even the ones in there have a very very minor role in regards to game time.

your worried about that and I am confused about the straight white plantation owners remark. What does that mean? Are you referencing who people who are white and live on plantations prefer to date because I am pretty sure they didn't have video games back then.

I don't get the reasoning behind Ashley at all.
Some go "HAR not everyone's bisexual" That is true. So why is Kaidan suddenly? It goes both ways.
Did her VA not want to do it? *shrugs*

I don't get it either, though to be honest, I'm glad she isn't bisexual. It would've tipped the scales even FURTHER in favor of the straight male.

I'm also honestly surprised Vega isn't romanceable. He hits on FemShep several times, lol. The scene where you get an opportunity to call him out on it is pretty funny, though. He backpedals pretty fast.

It was an ironic statement referencing a "literal" historical majority that is no longer a majority due to social and political power shifting.  I was anticipating comments stating that "straight men are the majority of the gaming industry and as such everyone else can eat trow."  Which we've already seen here, actually ;)  The funny thing about stating that is that over the past few years what constitutes "majority" of gamers is shifting, because games are starting to be more open to other demographics of players.   Because those players are speaking up, developers are listening, creating games that tailor towards those minorities a little more, which results in more of that minority group playing.    So the response of "well you're the minority so shut up" is a classic supressive one, in an attempt to stop people from "speaking up"  and shifting the "power" in the industry.

I doubt anyone on here is actually a white plantation owner.  I do, however, suspect that there may be people of Romani descent, and therefore my second comment could actually have hurt someone without me realizing it.

I hope that explains it in a way that you understand :)

Rather just for reasons stated in tv tropes. It was always funny because even in game lore says directly otherwise (ME codex since first game: "Asari are all female race").

Nevetheless, it cheapens the experience, because it shows that it wasn't made with lesbian players in mind.

And BTW, asexual mean lacking the drive to have sex. Interestingly, even though it was also stated that asari reproduce actually in asexual way (mental melding or sth - sex isn't necessary), they also showed sexual drive (and only when it comes to female sexual traits - Aethyta express adoration for Benezia's breasts, and message of those celibate Ardat Yakhsi shows excitement over seeing mentioned in ME2 erotic film with asari).

asexual means lacking the drive for sex in terms of human sexual identities. It's original biological meaning however is for organisms that reproduce by themselves and who's off-spring only recieves genes from them.

Hmmm I sense the romances that cascade from ME1 get some special attention because they kind of deserve it, and that the total number of straight romances are more or less tied to the personalities in the game. I mean to say, BW probably based these numbers on the characters and whether they had good ideas to make it work, and yeah some measure of audience catering will undoubtly be in effect. Is this a bad thing? Nah, this is where I do put 'artistic integrity' above equality for everybody. I'm happy BW actually dared to include gay romance at all.

IMO if you really like a squadmate, just make a Shep compatible with that character's sexuality and do the romance thing.

Then again, I'm also the ass who thinks it's unfair that Wrex, Grunt, Mordin, Joker, Zaeed, Legion, James, and Javik weren't romanceable.

I'd do anything to have them be romanceable. Yes, even Legion. He's adorable.

YAY!  I'm not the only one!  :D

lol, and totally agree with you with Tali.  Luckily, there's Gibbed Save Editor for her, though.

Unfortunately, I have Xbox. :(

I do too.  There's a way to use gibbed with the xbox.  There's a thread in the Mass Effect 2 forums that details how, exactly.  It involves a USB drive, though, and a program called Modio.

On same sex romance thread someone said that he spoke with dev and she said that they took into account a delicate balance of technical requirements and community feedback

So basically since guys dominated that thread, the came to conclusion that they don't have to bother with developing lesbian romances. This explains not only why Ash is no option, but also why Sam is so seriously underdeveloped.

Yeah OP, I noticed that too and made me wonder a bit on the possible reasons that led to this.
I found one that seems likely to me and it's James Vega.
I really foresee that he will be the main focus of a planned future DLC.
Think about it: he came out of nowhere and was awesomely dubbed and written (even all the straight males that i know found him funny, consistent and really liked the character),
It was really a huge surprise to see that he was not romanceable at least for female players, even if a lot of flirts are in the game (or so I heard since i didn't played a femshep yet).

It's really likely that they will release at least one DLC centered on a squad member.
Let's call out Liara (she was already in LotSB) and Garrus/Tali (they coul be dead from ME2).
This leaves us with EDI and VS (and Javik but he's already a DLC so...).
EDI's story is followed deeply during the whole main story so I would call her out too and VS is not an option either since they can die during the coup.

James is the sole character with plot armour that was not completely developed and I can really see him being the focus of a DLC of some sort.
And in my opinion that DLC will contain his romance, just as LotSB contained the renew of Liara's in ME2.

I was thinking that, too, while this thread was blossoming, glad someone else noticed it ;)  I was actually kind of afraid to talk to him during the main campaign because I was romancing Kaiden and didn't want to "accidentally" get into bed with Vega, but it all turned out to be harmless flirting.  Which then bothered me. HA. :o  I imagine they'll do exactly what you've described.

As EDI would say, "That was a joke."  Straight line mouth me all you want, Mr. Emoticon ;)

I don't know being compared to a slave owner because I have a Y chromosome doesn't seem that funny.

Well, maybe you just need to work on your sense of humor? I'm not sure if they have machines for that at the gym, but watching episodes of the IT Crowd has been proven to help ;)

The gym? Hahahahahahohehahohahehehaho. Seriously why do you assume I go the gym? And I'd rather watch Good News and Hot Fuzz.

Meh, oh well. We still get Garrus exclusively, and he's worth 5 LIs alone.
It's also irritating in this day and age that I still have to consider myself lucky there's a female option at all, there's a whole lot of other games that ignore this option entirely, and many others where it's merely cosmetic.

Yeah.  This.  "Wait, you mean I can play as a female character? And have a romance? and it doesn't SUCK? Thanks for the bone, BioWare!"  While Maleshep relaxes on the couch with his 6 love interests.

Don't get me wrong, I love BioWare and I do love the fact that they're changing things.  Just...you know, change it faster.  I want a harem of love interests, too ;)
