Just wondered, it says powered by IGN does that mean they have a bit of space in the server given over for the vault so long as they show adverts or is it actually part of IGN ?
What's the vault's relationsghip with IGN ?

IGN is the parent company that owns the Vault Network sites.

Aha thank you.. So do they profit from having the vault ?
What I mean is if they get loads of hits on a module do they make more money or is it just a fixed advertising thing no matter how many people download/ ammount of modules etc.

They make money via
1. SEO links to whatever they want, pushing what they want to end up on the front page of google for a particular term, which are enhanced by the hundreds of players linking to things like a module they like. ( This is hard to measure, but it's probably the most powerful way to monetize something like the vault ).
2. They run affiliate ads, click on the link they can make money. While you don't a lot of folks do that. There were affiliate programs selling dragon age for example. This is paid per action usually ( percentage of sales or if you register ). I can see broken code for googles version of this on the vault.
3. They sign contracts with advertisers who want ads on their site targeting us gamers for whatever reason. ( this is generally a flat rate for a given period of time. )
It's all under rupert murdoch, so he could sell advertisers complete programs including newspapers, tabloids, commercials run on fox news, and the vault can be thrown in as icing on the cake, or just another further means of selling eyeballs to the advertisers.

painofdungeoneternal... Thank you for the explanation the reason why is I recently discovered that I really don't like IGN, I'd never thought about them or visited their website before they got on their high horse about the Mass Effect endings and I started to investigate, then I thought.. My mods are on something to do with them ! But it seems to me I've done better out of them than they have of me so that's not so bad..
But Rupert Murdoch ! It gets worst..

How about placing files on both vault and the nexus so those looking for content on either place don't get the impression this community is dead.
Regardless of how you feel, removing content from them will hurt our small community far more than it will hurt murdoch's empire. Ideally end users can choose where they look for things, and at some point perhaps the nexus can give the vault network real competition.
Regardless of how it's paid for, or how we like those who run it, the vault is a very important part of this community which we don't have to pay for ourselves.

My mods are already on both and I'm not about to pull them off the vault, had they directly profitted from downloads of my stuff I would have done without a second thought. I do prefer the nexus with it's lack of voting and it feels much more "builder" friendly however I also have a loyalty to the vault for all its years of service and wouldn't want to affect the community or Beyond the Pale and Maximus either.
I'll just keep checking my mods for lost people and not press any adverts as usual. But if the Nexus takes over I wont be losing any sleep either.

I heard they were "just friends" but I have my suspicions....
