I'm an Atheist, always have been. Garrus's line didn't bother me one bit. As far as I was concerned, it's a funny notion. "Sweet. Meet up in turian heaven, have some green drinks. Hope there's a beach." I really didn't take it very seriously.

Ashley's God talk always bugs the crap out of me, but that's part of who she is. It gives me one extra reason to dislike her, but that's flavor for you. Can't like everyone around you.

As far as autodialogue and not being able to brush it aside, well I am pretty sure you can choose not to take part in the prayer for Thane. I don't think they change the beliefs of your Shepard. He/she never says I believe in "such and such". He/she just says a few lines that everyone can understand and are fitting for the situation, such as the death of a squadmate or saying goodbye before the final battle.

People will always have beliefs, and many people don't realize that their decision to not have a faith is a faith in its own.

There's a clever ambiguity in that sentence.

Someone could be saying "there are some people who hold on to athiesm in a way that is akin to faith, and a subset of those people don't realise they are doing it". Which sounds fine.

Alternatively, someone could be saying "everyone single person who is an atheist is in fact holding on to a principle of faith, though some do not realise it".

The statement is often used by a person to deliberately hint at the latter and equate non-faith with faith, while being able to defend themself that they only meant the former. It's subtle.

I think that even in the world of ME, religious terms are used as sayings and slang. This is so deeply embedded in our speech that if someone diverges from it by saying "oh my Gods" or "oh my Goddess", many eyebrows are immediately raised and the person is considered to be seeking attention.

Argument from lack of knowledge? Anecdotal argument at best.

I don't know anyone who was in the military that when they were in severe harms way (LOL DON'T KNOW ANYONE) and thought they might die that didn't sacrifice a small child out of hope.

Weird. Does that mean everyone in the military is a member of some strange cult with demons and ritual sacrifices?

Well, for a start it would mean that every single person you met in that situation genuinely did sacrifice a child. Which would be worrying...

Double negative, it's tricky Posted Image

There was a point in mass effect 1 where you could choose wether you believe in God or not. It was when talking to Ashley. I always figured this was just auto dialogue triggered by making that choice. Guess their canon shep included a religious one as well. I chose yes in me1 so it fitted my Shepard, but I can see where some of you are coming from who didn't, or didn't even have that conversation. But that's what happens with automatic dialogue that defines the character rather than the player.

Well it's odd banter from a guy who probably dosen't have believe in heaven (and wouldn't call it that) to someone who probably dosen't believe it either in a time where there is little widespread religion.

Because the majority of people who are now playing Mass Effect probably buy into this whole "God" thing.

But it's probably also just use of a phrase.

That's one thing I thought was funny about ME3. Everyones god/gods ended up being Protheans.

^ No its just someone keeps saying that Protheans are there gods/goddess, who is it Mr Prothean, IE he just bigging up his speices.

As for the rest it easly explained by being slang/commen saying for the stuff like Goddess etc.
The rest is explainable if most of the crew serving belive in something simular to the God of Abraham.
As for Garrus Heavens Bar statement, well if he knows that most of the humans serving in the allance have some beilf in an afterlife called Heaven like thing than it understandable?. Likewise it might be that Garrus belives in some kind of afterlife and so referes to it by the comman human name of Heaven.

I think it was just banter between the two characters. Honestly, by the way they talk, it can be taken in different ways, not necessarily meaning they both are religious.
