Is this just a time thing or do you need to do something before it's triggered?
I'm trying to do main plot missions only yto get the least amount of EMS. I'm up to that point but the mission isn't active yet.

You have to do a mission before it goes live. Either picking up Victus' kid or the Rachni mission in the Traverse.

You have to do any of the side missions given by Victus or Wrex/whoever is the krogan boss. Same thing with the Quarians. You have to do any of the side missions given by the Quarians/Geth.

Are they equal EMS?

Another question, I'm assuming you have to investigate the Asari colony with Banshees to advance the main story?
I found out you can kill a squad member. Gotta love discovering new things.

Where can you kill a squadmate? Also which of the two is worse for EMS depends on if the Rachni queen is alive or dead in your playthrough.

Rachni is worth EMS on completion, 100 + 50 if you save the queen or 75 if you dont.
Going after Victus' kid doesnt result in any EMS itself, but it opens up a side mission with can have a detrimental effect on your Krogan Clan assets if its not completed and also worth 40 on its own.

Yea I killed the Rachni Queen and just left his son.
The new squad member I found out about was Kaiden/Ashely situation with Udina. I never talked to him after he was injured and I did a renegade kill on Kaiden and then shot Udina.
Is siding with the Geth lower then killing them? I'm coming up to that point.

hmm gonna have to remember to do that with my male infiltrator that is slightly renegade. the bromance script sucks, Kaiden sounds like a whiny ****. didnt know i had to not visit him so i could kill him.

I'm not 100% sure that you don't have to visit him, but everytime I did it seemed like he always sided with me.

It should be about the same, whatever you don't get in Geth you get from Quarians.
However, if you rewrote the Heretics your Geth WA will be higher and your Quarian WA will be lower, so it would make more sense to side with the geth in that case.
Note though that you CAN get them both, I did on my first playthrough.
