Yeah, 3 minute phone call yesterday to dark horse, and I got a refund for all of my extra purchases!
But yeah. This revelation, that you need 10 *different* products to get the level X rifle... this is pretty bad. I actually managed to get a code for the Digital Art Book; between that, the digital comics, and the Barnes and Noble Pre-Order, I have my rifle up to level III.
On the one hand, I'm glad that I got all of the time-limited codes. On the other hand... well, that old "All of the Mass Effect 3 DLC will cost $870" dollars comes to mind. At the time, I thought that they hadn't considered that multiple copies of one cheaper product could net the same result, but now...
I know that the rifle isn't worth this time, effort, or money. And yet... I do want it. Indeed, I eventually would like to be able to max out *every* weapon and upgrade. It will take a lot of time, but I'm enjoying myself so far, so no big deal.
Now then, as for this thing, here is what I would suggest:
1) Do *not* buy codes off of ebay, unless you are sure you know where it came from. Remember the "Collector Assault Rifle" does not show up on the entitlements page; the product that included the code does, and you can only get one registration per product, and one rifle upgrade per registration.
2) Keep an eye out for future promotions/giveaways. They might want to release more swag, or maybe have a sale on older Dark Horse products, or even do some sort of cross promotion (like with Kingdoms of Amalur) or facebook thing.
3) There was a time when contact EA Chat support could get free codes. No need for any dishonest claims that a code did not work, or that you were supposed to receive a code but never got it, or something was missing. Simply asking politely got me a number of promotional exclusives (especially for the Dragon Age games) that would have either been impossible to obtain otherwise, or would have cost me an absurd amount of money on eBay. It might have taken a couple of tries to get an agent nice and knowledgeable enough to generate a code, but it worked 99% of the time, and really endeared me to EA's customer support. It gave me the feeling that the promotions weren't designed to drive fans crazy, but to simply reward and encourage loyal fans.
Those days seem to be over. The "go talk to your retailer" line has become a standard rebuff, and most of the time, they don't have the slightest idea on what you are even talking about when it comes to this sort of thing.
Still, at some point, customer service might be given access to the codes for Razer and Dark Horse promotions, and asking nicely might work. I'm not holding my breath.
Beyond that... I suppose one could be an a**hole, buy the products, use the codes, and return it for a refund, assuming it is offered. But that's pretty scummy, and a gigantic hassle to boot.
I am acutely aware that I am being insane and OCD. This is a decent but not mind-blowing rifle in a bloody video game. But I like having access to all of the content and options for a game.
Heh. It just hit me why they are giving out the "Collector" rifle with these items. God, I am slow on the uptake...
Well, hopefully there will be a reasonable way to get the Level X version of the rifle made available for all of us nutters.
In any case: Bioware, please make the conditions of these promotions *abundantly* clear. I know that you guys must be stupidly overwhelmed by all of the stuff on your plate, but seeing as how money is exchanging hands, it would be prudent to clarify all of the details as soon as humanly possible.
