Wasn't he an illusion of SHepards mind? Well the child was setup for something really big and changing for shepard. Sad it was wasted and never used. Like usual the ending abandoned everything done before hand.

I thought that the whole kid thing was pointless. It did not drive me emotionally in any way. Maybe I'm being heartless, but I just... Didn't have any attatchement with the kid, and the dialogue with him didn't make me any more sensitive towards him. And after having seen that scene in the way early E3 demo, I couldn't bring myself to care. And the dream sequences were a bit annoying, since the whole kid burning didn't have any effect on me.

What was the whole point of the kid? I mean, I get that he's supposed to be a symbol for the people he could not save on Earth and all, but... Hasn't Shepard, being the war hero that he is, seen way WORSE things? Hell even squadmates die for the Reaper cause? Any other dead in the game, Legion, Thane, Mordin, kicked me right in the heart, and made me tear up like a little girl. But somehow the kid exloding in the shuttle was... "Well, alright".
And I hate how Shepard is so ofuscated by this kid, like jesus, he barely gave a **** about Legion, and yet he has the dream with the kid...

Honestly, the dream sequence would have had so much more impact on me if they'd added the dead squaddies in the horizon, and you trying to get to them, and when you actually do they burst in flames I would have CRIED everytime.

But the kid... I just didn't care about some random kid, a lot of people is dying on Earth, so why care about that one damn ****ing kid. It really pisses me off because I don't see -my- Shepard caring -that much- about the kid. And he's full paragon :/

Your opinion on the kid BSN?

(All of this ignoring the godkid of course)

A little. I didn't like the opening scene with him dying. I have a kid that age and it just don't like seeing stuff like that. It wasn't horrible, but any time this game yanks control of actions and consequences away from the player, it is just a bad move. Then, when he showed up as the catalyst it all came crashing down.

I loved the kid and everything he symbolised. Really gave me a "human face" on the whole population of the galaxy, literally.

That is of course, until... yeah let's just say I fiiiinally managed to import a second Shepard yesterday after well over a week of trying to do so, and when I saw the kid running into that building only to have it blown up, I was... smiling... oh wow I'm a terrible person >_>

No impact well slight rage.

I wanted to just pull out a gun and blow his leg off so i didn't have to keep chasing the rat in the dream sequence.

I felt sad when he was blown up at the beginning. But by the first dream, I actually did have to roll my eyes a little. It was lot more intense when you were hearing the voices of your dead friends around you.

Absolutely no effect on me at all. The reason is because I "don't know" that kid at all. He's just some random child in the middle of a war zone dying. Yes it's unfortunately, but I'm not going to shed tears of him.

Mordin's death, on the other hand.

The first time I saw him die I was saddened. That's the extent of it though. I found the dream sequences annoying except when your squad would talk to you. My first play-through mordin had died back in ME2 and that new salarian was much better suited to the dream. He had religious undertones and fit the feel of it all much better.

If anyone had dream lines it should have been Thane. His prayer at his deathbed for you was especially well suited to it.

The kid was not compelling. I'd built my Shepard's story on relationships-- like the one with the lost squadmate on Virmire, or the ones with the crew of the SR1 that died in the Collector attack, or the one with Mordin before his sacrifice or Legion before his, or the Virmire survivor who nearly died on Shepard's watch, or her own damn mother stuck fighting Reapers somewhere else...

Yet the one who haunts Shepard's dreams is this one little kid? She didn't even know his name, and he wasn't the only one to die that day who was within Shepard's ability to save.

Every time I saw that kid, I wanted to kick him out of my game. There were SO many other ways to try and show that Shepard was losing the will to fight, that the weight of the galaxy was finally taking its toll. Her reaction to the Lazarus Project files was one such way that didn't happen enough. Perhaps bringing Saren back to taunt her in her dreams, or the Virmire KIA, or Harby... ANYTHING other than that damned kid.

Kid sequence in intro was a truly horrid piece of storytelling that should have no place in a mass effect game. Ditto the dream sequences he's for some reason appearing in.

Hearing all the voices of the dead characters was interesting. Chasing after the kid in slo-mo wasn't.

I actually didn't mind the kid or the dream sequences - made me think that Shepherd is actually human and years of doing the impossible are finally catching up to him. The dream scene straight after Tuchanka was pretty heart wrenching - hearing Mordin's voice. And then the one after the coup - hearing Thane's and Kelly's voices. Yeah, I actually liked them - added some emotional punch to it for me, reminded me of the people who had died.

Edit: Just read above that the Virmire sacrifice isn't in the dream sequences. If that's true then that's definitely a missed opportunity. But I still liked them.

The only thing good about the Dreams was the haunting echoes of your dead squadies. Ashley's had me reliving Virmire.

In my initial playthrough, I saw the dreams as being a sign that the situation was getting to Shepard. The people s/he's lost, their voices haunting him/her. I thought it was really well done.

Subsequently, I'm can't help but associate the kid with the Catalyst avatar, and that just flat ruins the poignancy.

Edit: In response to an above post, I can assur eyou the virmire casualty is in the dreams.  I've heard Kaidan in both recent playthroughs.

When I first saw the dreams I thought it was going to be a neat little way to show guilt over failing so many people. How could Shepard save the galaxy when he couldn't even keep his friends alive?

But instead I got some stupid kid I saw twice dragging down what could of been great character driven drama give you a chance to settle things with the character you left to die on Virimire. Even if it was just in your head.

The child annoyed the hell out of me. Frankly I was glad to see the ugly little git get blown up at the start.

The dreams would have been excellent if it was he Virmire victim, not a random brat we had no reason to care about.

If indoctrination theory is made canon, and it was all just the reapers attempting to get a foothold in Shepards mind, then I'd be ok with him though.

I totally agree.  I never felt any connection to the kid.  My first thought on seeing the shuttles explode was "Oh no! I hope Anderson wasn't on one of those!"  "Bummer about the kid though" came later.

No, the kid's appearance in the beginning didn't have any emotional effect on me except feeling like being overtly manipulated. The fact that no children have been shown in ME1 and ME2 only intestified it.

I liked dreams because they were really Max Payne-ish and opened Shepard's mind a bit for you. Though, what Lightspeaker wrote:

The Lightspeaker wrote...
I actually kinda liked the IDEA behind it in that Shepard seemed to be disturbed by what happened back on Earth.  ... Would have been better to...dare I say it...kill off someone like Anderson at the start and had that haunting Shepard.

THAT is what would impact me a way more.

You hear Mordin, Thane and Legion too. All of whom were more important to us and Shepard and should have been shown instead of a random nobody.

The kid on Earth felt like your standard Hollywood attempt to make you cry. Combined with Mansell's dramatic music I can understand if anyone fell for it. I almost did.

In the dreams it was kinda silly. I couldn't sympathize. But I guess they figured they had to use the kid's character model or it'd go to waste.

The whole dream-thing felt forced and only annoyed me. They should have left the kid with the exploding shuttle at the beginning and let me decide wether or not I'd be mooved or care about it. Then again when it comes to choices ME3 is the bastard child of the ME family.
