Did the kid on Earth and dreams had any impact on you?

I take that back. Once I saw the kid/star child, it made me angry.

To me, they symbolize everyone lost and left behind. I figure the kid’s image is just burned into Shepard’s subconscious.
So far I only had two dreams, how many are there?

I felt nothing towards the kid. If the beginning of the game hadn't been sp rushed and if they'd had Shepard interact with him a little more, then maybe.
The dream was a good idea, but poorly executed. The first time I thought it would show all of Shepard's losses (Akuze, Mindoir, Torfan, possible squad mates you lost in the previous games). But no, all I got was the kid I didn’t care for.
Sure, having Mordin and Ashley whisering in the second dream was a nice touch, but I just wish they’d done more with the dreams.

Edit: Just read above that the Virmire sacrifice isn't in the dream sequences. If that's true then that's definitely a missed opportunity. But I still liked them.
The voice of Ashley/Kaidan is definitely there in the final dream, but I'm not sure what triggers it. Maybe the voices just come at you in random order. First time through, I didn't hear it. Second time through (reloading an old save, not actually playing the entire game a second time), I heard Ashley almost instantly.

Honestly, the dream sequence would have had so much more impact on me if they'd added the dead squaddies in the horizon, and you trying to get to them, and when you actually do they burst in flames I would have CRIED everytime.
When I first saw the kid, I was like all "WTF?", could not care less for him.
When I had my first dream sequence I just wanted to get it over with and go back to ACTUAL story.
The kid is lame and the way he tries to push my buttons if insulting.

the only time with the kid i ever felt something was in the very beginning when you see the shuttle get blown up. that was it.
but then the nightmares started happening with this random kid, i know what they're going for. but i really just felt nothing.
maybe it's just me, but seeing how i was attached to my squad mates, having nightmares of my squad mates demise because i failed, would of had WAY WAY more of an impact on me then a random boy i saw got killed.
because from ME 1 all the way to ME 3.
If i remember correctly everyone on your squad except Liara can get killed at one point or another, it is your Shepherd's role to make sure they get out alive, you WORKEd to make sure they stay alive. you cared enough so that they don't get killed.
This might seem like a cliche but stop and think about it for a second. I'll give you an example, Kratos, and his nightmares of his family dying at his hand. it's powerful but i don't care as much because it's Kratos' not the Shepherd avatar that i'm playing as. I have no control of the narrative in God of War, i didn't have a choice nor the ability to change the outcome of his family dying. in Mass Effect i have that ability.
not to mention bioware writing blows God of war writing out of the water every second of the year. but still i hope you get the point i'm driving at.

I've read in a few places that there was a serious effort on Bioware's part to write ME3 in such a way that people new to the series could jump right into it. If that's the case, it seems sort of obvious why it was a kid - there isn't enough time in the opening moments of the game to develop any character to the point that a new player would care if they died, or at least understand why Shepard would be so deeply effected. So they kill a kid, which is something that should have an emotional impact on anybody. If that's the case it's sort of a lame compromise. Maybe they could have used a kid for new players, but some established character for people importing a save.
yeah i totally get that.
and that is why i generally hate video game trilogy's its like they HAVE to no matter what make sure each entry is easy entry for everyone for anyone who is buying the game.
this isn't Bioware issue it's every video game company out there.

But that was the first playthrough of the demo. On repeated PTs it soon lost its impact, and then in game when that bl**dy child appeared in dreams he became the 'oh no here we go again' it's the visible part of Shep's indoctrination. For some reason I always assumed that Shepard would be indoctrinated and have to be killed by the VS, Garrus or maybe Liara before victory was achievable. This was obviously too simple for Bioware and shows why I don't appreciate the ending - I am incapable of deep thought.

I'm not a champion of the "Indoc Theory", but I wondered from the moment no one made an effort to help the kid into the shuttle. What kind of marines are they? Then, the tree branches in the dreams look more like dendrites, than tree branches. Finally, when first encountering god-child, I was certain he was a hallucination. Boy, don't I wish...
I think the indoctrination idea was in the works, at one point, but got scrapped, late in the game, development-wise. Whether the boy was part of that, I guess I'll never know.
The ending is a hodge-podge of cast-off ideas and cinematics, which is why it's such a damn mess. I really believe the indoctrination idea is part of the cast-off mixture. As late as November, they were trying to get the game mechanics right for a late-game segment in which the Reapers finally seize control of Shepard. They said the mechanics were never satisfactory, so they moved on to other ideas.

how wrong i was.
the nightmares were boring and, again, pointless. The only thing i liked was that you could hear dead squadmates in the dreams, first ashley (who died on virmire) and then thane and legion as they died. but would've been happier without the kid/dreams.
I heard that the kid is supposed to represent all the people Shepard failed to save and i think it's not a good way to illustrate that. It just felt forced and like they were trying to tug our heartstrings and make us feel something just because it's a child. Made me like the kid even less.
And when the catalyst appeared and looked like the kid... i was beyond annoyed.

I'd rather prefer to chase my dead squadmates in the dream, if writers thought those dreams was that nessesary. The kid just annoyed me.
