I thought the kid was pointless, and got annoyed at him after 2 minutes, and when the shuttle blew up i actually was relieved as i hoped that would be the last of him.
how wrong i was.
the nightmares were boring and, again, pointless. The only thing i liked was that you could hear dead squadmates in the dreams, first ashley (who died on virmire) and then thane and legion as they died. but would've been happier without the kid/dreams.

I heard that the kid is supposed to represent all the people Shepard failed to save and i think it's not a good way to illustrate that. It just felt forced and like they were trying to tug our heartstrings and make us feel something just because it's a child. Made me like the kid even less.

And when the catalyst appeared and looked like the kid... i was beyond annoyed.

I'd rather prefer to chase my dead squadmates in the dream, if writers thought those dreams was that nessesary. The kid just annoyed me.

I agree with this!

Throughout the course of the trilogy we have formed so many emotional connections to characters, some of them not even mentioned in the game or got discarded like trash and we have to dream about some random kid.
I really hated that hug in the last dream, it just alienated me from my own character.

The background whispering chatter features dead characters, but yes. Maybe I'm just a black hearted monster, but the kid apparently dying didn't affect me much. By contrast, Mordin's death had me in tears.

All of these points. Like many I appreciated the voices of dead squadmates and felt that part of the dream sequence was very well done. The kid though, yeah it definitely felt like the writers were trying to force us to "care" about him. That hug in the last sequence made me cringe a little when I realized it was Shepard holding the kid. Then we get to the Catalyst and I just shake my head...

Yeah, I know, that was the only cool part of the dream IMO. I though if you could see them and try to chase them instead of the kid it would be much sadder and creepier at the same time.

It was a little cliche, but I didn't mind it. They wanted to show more of Shepard's inner life this time, so they gave him some PTSD. It's not uncommon for sufferers of PTSD to fixate on a single image or person that crystallizes their trauma.

It's also a tried-and-true storytelling device. You ever notice that politicians bring human examples to their speeches. ("Here's Clara Mae, who is unemployed with three children, and policy X did this to her!"). People react more to stories of individuals than statistics.

First time round I liked the child and the dreams because of my giant bleeding heart. Now that God Child has made his appearance at the end...hate his existence.

But from a story point of view I see it as something to affect Shepard, which it would with mine. So she would have nightmares about that one tiny life she watched die.

But I'll be sitting at the computer on my third playthrough just glaring at him the entire time.

I liked him on Earth and kinda in 1st dream sequences.

Then it got tiring with other 2 dreams.
I don't know who that kid is, stop pandering with him.

Why not my fallen squadamtes to be in dream sequences?
Hell, when I hear their voices in dream I almost cried.
The kid? Didn't cared anymore.

And then the endings showed up.
F*CK THAT KID!
I WANT HIM TO DIE IN HORRIBLE PAIN!

The scene of the kid's death on Earth definitely stuck with me, but 99% of the reason for that was Clint Mansell's music. So any effect the kid had on me then and in the dreams afterward is really thanks to Clint.

The kid at the beginning was Ok. Just a way to get you connected to earth I guess. Then they used him in the dreams. Which I found out of place but ok. Then he appeared at the end. Which by then was right out.

I mostly found the dreams annoying.

Shepard has become mentally unstable.

I didn't care about the kid in the slightest, and the dreams served as more of an annoyance than anything. Part of the reason I hated the ending so much is the starchild which for some reason chose to take the form of the most annoying part of the game up until that point.

No. Actually thanks to that kid I knew ME3 was going to disappoint me. Silly me, I bought ME3 nevertheless but I won't make the same mistake again.

Using kids to cause any emotion is cheap and disgusting to say the least, it's a sign of poor writting, a sign of a huge lack of creativity. The first time I saw him I thought "what the hell Bioware, I thought you were better than that". Then I saw all those dream scenes that only got to irritate me even more. And then Casper... oh my... Casper! For God's sake what the hell they were smoking when they were writting that crap?

Yeah, the first one was ok for me (of course I didn't know the ending yet at that time) but the when they did it again I was expecting something else like - as you say - squad mates. It definitely lost it's impact after the first dream.

He easily was the most annoying character. They kept emphasizing a person I had no attachment to.

The kid back on earth was quite a nice touch - kinda odd - but still thought it was well done. He represented all that would happen if you didn't come back to earth with something decent.
First dream sequence, again, kinda strange - felt very out of place for Mass Effect, but still went with it.
By the third time, it was getting rediculous. I liked that they added the voices of Mordin and the others who sacrificed themselves, but that goddamn kid was always there too. Shepard has killed hundreds of people personally and hundreds of thousands of Batarians indirectly when he destroyed that Mass Relay. Is he really going to care THAT MUCH about some child he met once?

I hated the kid from the very beginning, they really should have used someone that is known to you throughout the trilogy like the VS.

I was expecting a screamer.

Like one of the dreams where he catches up to the kid... and the kid turns and all of a sudden he's a husk and/or a Reaper and there's a loud scream and Shepard wakes up.

Was bracing myself for that all game, haha.

It was a touching scene until they started beating you over the head with it. "You are so sad that you are having nightmares!" Nightmares that go on way too long and where you are running through molasses.

The kid initially had an impact, then shep had a dream where I spent what seemed like forever walking after the kid that made me want to shoot him. As the OP post said, if Shep was going to have sleepless nights you'd think it'd be from something worse. Shep has seen so much worse, so many more brutal deaths, even ones caused by him that haven't effected him but one kid...

Manipulative from the start.

But it's even worse now that you see where the story goes ... it actually made my second playthrough impossible. I stopped right after the vent scene.

I actually laughed when the kid died at the start of the game. It was just such an obvious ploy to tug at your heart string and it failed so badly.

The kid at the beginning of the game didn't bother me.

But the dream sequences were just trite.
