Man--I used to play AD&D a ton when I was a teen (yeah--I was _that_ popular ;)).  But when it came to CRPGs, I just never cared about my character enough to finish 'em.  Still haven't got far in Oblivion, ME, FO3, etc.  Something about their stories never clicked for me.

But then I hit DA:O.  I'm hooked.  For whatever reason, this one just clicks.  And the idea that a predecessor exists that I never played (BG), I had to get it.  The graphics don't look too shabby, but I want to play a story that lasts and lasts :).

Questions for those of you who glorify the ol' game:

1) Should I play through BG before I play BG2?
2) Do you recommend any specific mods to improve my gaming experience? (No cheats--just GUI mods, or mods that fix unintended bugs)
3) Starting class that you really liked?
4) Do you think BG2 is so much better than BG that playing through BG isn't needed?  Or are the characters in BG worth the extra 100+ hrs?
5) Guestimate the amount of time you think it took you to play through each game (this can be in months or years--hours are so hard to gauge).

Thank you in advance!

You don't have to play BG2 before BG 1.

I definitely think Shadows of Amn is the best of the 3 games.

As for how much time it takes, it depends on how much of a completionist you are and if you're willing to constantly swap characters in and out of your party, or if you're like me and pick a different party to run through with every time.

1) Yes, unless you don't want to.

2) It's kinda fun to play BG in the BG2 Engine. You'll need both games installed and Baldur's Gate Tutu, which can easily be found on Google. If you play Throne of Bhaal, the Ascension Mod makes things much more difficult -- so, get it if you are up for a challenge.

3) Mage is the most powerful class in the game, except in the beginning -- die a lot. Not that it really matters once you get more people in the party.

4) BG 1 isn't needed per se, but it is pretty cool to start out your character at level 1 in Candlekeep then play it all the way through to being god like at the end of Throne of Bhaal. AND low level dnd combat, is, imho, really fun.

5) BG1 -- 60 hours; BG2: 150 hours, BG2: Throne of Bhaal: 30 hours.

I highly recommend Baldur's Gate Trilogy (http://www.spellholdstudios.net/ie/bgt) over Tutu. Early versions were buggy, but that's been resolved. It basically allows you to play through BG1, TOTSC, SOA, and TOB as one continuous game. Very cool. BG1 doesn't have as much inter-party banter or interaction as BG2 or DA:O, but it does have a great open-ended plot and even more importantly, great atmosphere.

Definitely check out the fix and tweak packs at Gibberlings Three (http://www.spellholdstudios.net/ie/bgt) as well. They help to smooth out some of the kinks of an older engine.

Mages (particularly dualed with fighter/kensai) and sorcerers are the most powerful characters, but I think that for a first time player a paladin makes for a nice choice. Pick one of the powerful kits, cavalier or inquisitor, and you'll kick ass through pretty much all of games from level 1 to 20+, without having to do much metagaming. You also get to wear the sweet loot.

1) Up to you, I didn't but I ended up not thinking much of BG1.

2) The Baldurdash bugfixes, although they're probably included with most other big mods.

3) There's so much choice in BG2, but mages have some great spells.

When they were new games, I bought them, and in neither case was I able to accept the way it played in its tutorial segment.  I found the control system took way too much getting used to at the time.  I was working long hours, but enjoying the work; the only time I ever had that experience.   I lost a ton in Social Security benefit from that, working at much less than I ever made after I was maybe 24 or so, in actual buying power . .

There is still a fairly active community devoted to that game and to Infinity Engine games generally.  The BG part of that is still reflected on Bioware's old forums.

forums.bioware.com/viewforum.html

Icewind Dale and Planescape Torment were not Blioware's, but they have living web sites still.  I haven't visited any lately to offer any URLs.

Play through in order, BG1, expansions, BG2 expansions. Best way by far to do it.

As for class, BG1 is a tough game when you start out. You can play just about any class you want though as there are so many options npc companion wise.

One big tip, when you start BG1 make sure everyone has some kind of missile weapon. It makes a big diff when the whole group can get a couple shots off before enemies close into melee range.

The games are tough but fun. I'd play them in order though.

These are such helpful suggestions--thank you all so much! DVDs arrive tomorrow!

Wish they'd put these on Steam or Direct2Drive.  I really prefer not to use my DVD spot :).

i play baldurs gate every now and then

i recomend you play bg1 patched

Install Baldurs gate 2, patch the game and then add "the Darkest day" mod which adds a tonne of new stuff all balanced, give you more races including dark elf and ork and classes.

Play icewind dale if your a huge fan after.

I reccomend you check out www.sorcerorsplace.net for custom portraits and soundsets if you get really into the game
