Greetings, super friends!  Like many of you, I was appalled by Penny Arcade's decision to shut down the charity.  I tweeted "Tycho" and "Gabe" (Penny Arcade's founders) about my dismay.  Gabe was kind enough to respond.  I am @TheFroats.

 @TheFroats:
@cwgabriel @TychoBrahe We say, here, free money to go buy sick children toys...and you say NO??? Have you guys lost your God Damned MINDS?

@TheFroats:
@cwgabriel @TychoBrahe CP used to be about helping kids and combating negative gamer stereotypes. What changed? You forgot your mission.

@cwgabriel:
@TheFroats I don't know what to tell you man. If you read what Jamie said and still think that way I'm sorry.

@TheFroats
I did and I do. If someone says "Support child's play if you like Kiddie Porn", shut that down, totally. But a blanket policy?

@cwgabriel:
@TheFroats Child's Play is not a tool to draw attention to your cause. Child's Play is the cause. That's our feeling on it.

@TheFroats
@cwgabriel It was not a tool to draw attention. It was a tool to fight a negative stereotype...which is why you guys created it, remember?

@cwgabriel:
@TheFroats it's not your tool to fight your negative stereotype. you can not use the charity as a shield.

@TheFroats
@cwgabriel It was a tool to fight "our" negative stereotype...the one you created the charity to fight. Gamers. Not ME3 detractors. Gamers.

@TheFroats
@cwgabriel Maybe I can't change your mind. But you were one of the good guys...and you broke my heart tonight. We wanted to help and we did.

@cwgabriel
@TheFroats I'm sorry man. I hope me taking the time to talk with you about it at least shows you that I care about it.

@TheFroats
@cwgabriel I don't doubt you care, I doubt that you're making the right call. Who's helping the kids, who's hurting them? Thx for your time.

Thought I'd post this so people at least can see where they're coming from.  Am I wrong?  Is he?

EDIT:  A few things have happened since I posted this.  First, Tycho (the other founder of Penny Arcade and Child's Play), posted a more reasonable response: http://penny-arcade....ake-mass-effect

Second, I've caught some flak for starting out by asking if they were out of their god damned minds, and rightfully so.  That's not a good way to start a conversation.  Sadly, I am human, and I have emotions.  This was my emotion when I learned that they had shut down our charity drive.

Third, it's become apparent that some people don't understand: Tycho and Gabe (real names: Jerry and Mike) co-founded Penny Arcade and Child's Play.  They have since hired a woman, Jamie, to run the day to day of the business...but Jamie is their employee.  They are still entirely in control of Child's Play.

Fourth AND MOST IMPORTANT:  This should not be used to attack Child's Play, which remains an entirely worthy charity.  There was a suggestion that we forward this to Forbes.  Please do not do that.  We gain nothing by attacking a worthy cause.  If you agree with them, fine.  If you don't, focus in on Penny Arcade, but don't destroy Child's Play.

My own personal view is that I understand Child's Play's position (now that Tycho has added new details)...but that I am still insulted. I was insulted in how they've covered the story to begin with (acting like authority figures when they admit in their tv series that they are only casual fans), and this is the icing on the cake. People are free to continue to donate to Child's Play. This is their right. I will take my dollars where they are appreciated. This is my right. Child's Play remains a worthy charity...there are also others.

Thanks for all the responses!

Wait, they shut down the charity all together?!

I thought it was just the retake drive portion they shut down?

The retake portion, of course. Not the whole charity. Sorry I wasn't clear.

Interesting that he knows so much about what is going on in so short a time frame...

Hold the line!

He's the co-founder of Child's Play.  Of course he knows what's going on.

Typical political nonsense.

Bear in mind their opinion on the Retake Mass Effect movement has been negative from the start. They shut it down because it was working, and they didn't like that. ****ing ****s.

 Wow. I'm suprised too.
"@cwgabriel:@TheFroats it's not your tool to fight your negative stereotype. you can not use the charity as a shield."

That statement is really weird to me. A shield from what? What negative stereotype?
I think this was a bizarre move.

What's worse...
We hate the endings! (Help the kids.)
We love the endings! (F the kids.)
Dude. This is not ok...at all. Bottom line they should be happy all of these generous people chose THEIR charity to give to. Not give in to a PR nightmare. What jokes. I never really cared about IGN, PAX was cool. PA was alright. All three of them can now count on a very vocal bartender talking to everyone they know about how nasty they really are. Seriously.

In fairness, he's saying he's refusing the money for a charity from anyone that's attached to a cause (other than just giving sick kids toys), regardless of whether he agrees with us.  Of course, he has previously stated on his website that he does, in fact, disagree with us.

He's not refusing money but the ChipIn for RetakeME3 is no more because he doesn't want Child's Play associated with any causes that aren't Child's Play.

I have to agree though. It took a video game ending to get people to donate.

He'll take your money just not as part of a publicity stunt. Or in other words, "So you are refusing to donate because he doesn't support the RetakeME cause?"

So what happened to that money? Did it get refunded or was it already into the charity?

So? Let's find another charity to "abuse". I'm sure someone out there wants our money.
