As the main point of contact for Child’s Play, Jamie has been buried under mail about this situation.  Apparently some of the people giving to the cause seemed to think that they were paying for a new ending to Mass Effect. She’s been asked what the goal is, and how much they need to raise in order to get the ending produced. We’ve also been contacted by PayPal due to a high number of people asking for their donations back.  This is in addition to readers who simply couldn’t understand how this was connected to Child’s Play’s mission.  We were dealing with a lot of very confused people, more every day, and that told us we had a problem.

THEY STOPPED IT PRIMARLY DUE TO A BUNCH OF IDIOTS WHO CANT TIE THEIR SHOES DONATING MONEY THINKING IT WAS GOING TO BIOWARE, AND THAN CHARGING IT BACK.

It was bound to happen.  Oh well, I don't support Retake ME3, but it is pretty cool that most of them donated to charity not expecting anything in return.

Bump to keep it up, and also a question:

How did people actually get confused by this? It seemed pretty clear to me that the whole point of charity was purely a way for gamers to demonstrate that they weren't entitled brats...and were clearly aware that bioware and EA would never touch the money due to the legal implications....

The only thing I can think of is that this has happend in relatively close proximity to the Kickstarter phenomenon and some morons got the damned thing mixed up....but that's still some powerful stupid right there.

That's quite a bit different than what I heard.... I heard she was receiving hate mail from pro enders who were chewing her out for being associated with the retakeme3 movement.

We did good raising money for Child's Play; Child's Play continues to do good by helping out sick kids. Everybody wins.

As for those ****s demanding money back? Karma's a b**ch.

No, that's legit. From that same post you quoted:

"Child’s Play cannot be a tool to draw attention to a cause.  Child’s Play must be the Cause."

Most of us donated for the kids, I made damned sure to e-mail them clarifying that. To be fair, Penny Arcade is pro-ending, so they might be making it up. But we can't rally disprove that.

(This is from my experience working for a non-profit for a long time)
No, they would have worked with us, and if we had explained that it was more for a place for people to turn that crap into good there wouldnt have been much of an issue (especially with the donations continuing to roll in from when i was watching).

Probably people whose first language isn't English.

And I honestly don't believe them. I do not believe Penny Arcade is telling the truth; they are likely taking a couple of cases widely out of context.

I don´t belive in charities to begin with but then again, their nintendo, their rules. If I don´t like it, I have the problem, not them.

I'd like to see a link to the source on this, because while I am certainly able to believe there are people this monumentally stupid out there... if it were a troll that's the very sentiment it would play on.

If it is true, then I would consider their donation to be an 'illiteracy tax' :P

Hi person who can't read, please take this someplace else.

The concept of a public forum is a difficulty one, yes?

there was talk about taking the retake portion out , but it was decided to finish it out. It was always about the charity, had there not been the chargeback issues i know it could have been worked out.

I don't know, tin foil hat here, but it's a great strategy for derailing the train.

Not that I believe this is the case, but I REALLY want to believe that people aren't approaching paypal asking for charity donations back because they didn't understand what charity they donated to...

If you thought the buzz about the ftc complaint was bad...

This charity was for the KIDS not the ending.

We did good.

Why "was"? The kids are still here. The banner for RetakeME3 is not. Continue to help the kids, donate directly!

" They have stopped taking donations now partly because they basically won and partly because we don’t know how to feel about this use of the charity." Last I heard we were still trying to donate money. What a wash this whole mess has been.

As unfortunate as it is that the drive is stopping, the connection between an agenda-related petition aimed to bring legitimacy to its outcries and a charity-based organization was very weird from the get-go, and wasn't exactly clear on how it was relevant.

While one could argue (and some have) that Child's Play was started for similar reasons (in response to those such as Jack Thompson's claims that gamers are nothing more than violent dregs and to bring legitimacy to the demographic as a whole,) one must also acknowledge that the motives of the charity have changed in the years that it has existed and, regardless of its initial motives, it is currently much more sincere than "we aren't bad because we give money."

If you're going to get mad at someone over this, get mad at the inevitable waves of journalists painting this in a light skewed to antagonize the fans. Do not get mad at Child's Play. They let the drive go on for a lot longer than they had to, and its existence really did put them in a weird position.
